Emily approached the café with a mixture of trepidation and determination. The thought of meeting Margaret filled her with unease, but she knew that whatever secrets were to be revealed, she had to confront them head-on. As she entered the café, the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped her, but it did little to calm her nerves.
Margaret spotted Emily first and waved her over to a small table in the corner. The older woman’s demeanor was composed, but there was an intensity in her gaze that Emily couldn’t ignore. Taking a deep breath, Emily made her way to the table and sat down.
“Thank you for coming,” Margaret began, her voice steady but tinged with something unrecognizable—perhaps regret, or even fear.
“I’m not sure what you want to talk about,” Emily replied cautiously, “but I’m here.”
Margaret nodded, her eyes softening as she looked at Emily. “I know you care for Jaxon, and I can see how much he cares for you and Lily. But there are things you don’t know about him, things he’s kept hidden for your protection.”
Emily’s heart skipped a beat at Margaret’s words. “What do you mean? What has he kept hidden?”
Margaret took a deep breath before speaking again. “Jaxon hasn’t told you the full truth about his past, especially about the accident that took his memory. There are details that even I didn’t know until recently.”
Emily’s pulse quickened. “Go on,” she urged, her voice barely above a whisper.
Margaret leaned in closer, her expression serious. “Jaxon’s accident was not just a random event. It was orchestrated by someone very close to us—someone who wanted to ensure that Jaxon’s memories were erased.”
Emily’s eyes widened in shock. “What? Who would do such a thing? And why?”
Margaret’s gaze faltered for a moment before she continued. “It was Harold, Jaxon’s father. He orchestrated the accident to erase Jaxon’s memory because he disapproved of Jaxon’s relationship with you. Harold believed that by wiping Jaxon’s memory, he could manipulate him into the life he wanted for him, without you in the picture.”
Emily’s mind reeled as she tried to process the gravity of what Margaret was saying. “But why would he do something so horrible? How could he believe that was the right thing to do?”
Margaret’s expression was one of deep sadness. “Harold is a man who believes in control above all else. He couldn’t stand the thought of Jaxon living a life he didn’t approve of, especially with someone he considered beneath their status. When Jaxon fell in love with you, Harold saw it as a betrayal of everything he had planned for his son. The accident was his twisted way of taking back control.”
Emily felt a wave of nausea wash over her. The thought of Jaxon’s own father being responsible for the loss of his memories was almost too much to bear. “Does Jaxon know?”
Margaret shook her head. “No, he doesn’t. I only recently discovered the truth myself. Harold kept it well-hidden, but I found out through someone who was involved in the cover-up. Jaxon has no idea that his father was behind the accident.”
Emily’s hands trembled as she tried to grasp the enormity of the situation. “Why are you telling me this now? What do you expect me to do?”
“I’m telling you because you deserve to know the truth,” Margaret replied, her voice firm. “Jaxon deserves to know as well, but I wanted to give you the chance to decide how to handle it. You need to be prepared for what this revelation could mean for your relationship.”
Emily sat back in her chair, her mind racing. She thought about everything Jaxon had been through, how hard he had fought to rebuild his life after losing his memories. The idea of telling him the truth and potentially shattering everything he had worked for was almost unbearable.
“What do you want me to do?” Emily asked, her voice trembling.
Margaret reached out and took Emily’s hand, her grip surprisingly gentle. “I want you to do what’s best for Jaxon. I can’t make this decision for you, but I trust that you’ll do the right thing. Just know that whatever you decide, I’ll support you.”
Emily nodded, though her thoughts were still in turmoil. “I need some time to think,” she said finally, her voice barely audible.
“Of course,” Margaret replied. “Take all the time you need. But please, don’t wait too long. The truth has a way of coming out, whether we’re ready for it or not.”
As Margaret stood to leave, she looked at Emily with a mixture of sadness and hope. “I’m truly sorry for everything that’s happened. I never wanted it to come to this.”
Emily watched as Margaret left the café, her heart heavy with the weight of the revelation. She felt as though her world had been turned upside down, and she had no idea how to make sense of it all.
When she returned home, Jaxon was in the living room, playing with Lily. His face lit up when he saw Emily, but she couldn’t bring herself to return his smile. The burden of the truth weighed heavily on her, and she knew that she couldn’t keep it from him for long.
“Emily? Is everything okay?” Jaxon asked, concern etching his features as he noticed her troubled expression.
Emily swallowed hard, trying to keep her voice steady. “We need to talk, Jaxon. There’s something I need to tell you.”
Jaxon’s smile faded, replaced by a look of worry. “What is it? Did something happen?”
Emily took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to say. “It’s about the accident that took your memory. There’s something you need to know—something that could change everything.”
Jaxon’s expression turned serious, and he nodded slowly. “Okay. Tell me.”
Emily’s heart pounded as she prepared to reveal the truth that would shatter the illusion of their world. She knew that once the words were spoken, there would be no turning back.
“The accident,” she began, her voice shaking. “It wasn’t an accident, Jaxon. Your father was behind it. He orchestrated it to erase your memories because he didn’t want us to be together.”
Jaxon’s eyes widened in shock, and he took a step back, as though the weight of the revelation had physically struck him. “What? No, that can’t be true.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears as she saw the pain in his face. “I’m so sorry, Jaxon. I didn’t want to believe it either, but it’s true. Your mother told me everything.”
Jaxon’s face hardened as the reality of the situation sank in. “My own father… How could he do this to me? To us?”
Emily reached out to him, but he pulled away, his expression one of betrayal and anger. “I need to be alone,” he said, his voice cold and distant.
Before Emily could say anything, Jaxon turned and walked out of the room, leaving her standing there, her heart breaking for the man she loved. She knew that their relationship would never be the same again, and she couldn’t help but wonder if they would ever recover from this devastating truth.
