It was a long movie, the one hour of it felt like five hours instead. The second the credits rolled I sat up and took the empty popcorn bowl from the ground.
“I'm going to the restroom,” I said before rushing down the theater steps to the bottom of the room. Once out the door I started to run down the hall to the lobby. I tossed the popcorn bowl in the trash and brushed my hands down my face. I want to go home so bad. I sat down on a bench beside the trash can and relaxed my face. All of this was an act, I felt like I was playing a role in a movie. I was a completely different person around Lorenzo. Once I collected my thoughts and calmed down and got up and walked to the snack counter.
“How can I help you?” a girl came up to me. She had long blonde hair that fell over her shoulders, both her eyes were chocolate brown but her left eye had a speck of green dashing through it . The uniform she was wearing was different from the other workers and her name tag read, “supervisor”.
“Uh- I'm looking for Alejandro?” I asked. She tilted her head and squinted her eyes at me in confusion.
“He just left…” she paused.
“Oh I'm sorry.” I turned around to go back to my bench.
“Do you want me to give him a message?” she responded loudly while fixing her posture and brushing her curtain bangs out of her face.
“Oh no thank you.” I turned around and slowly walked back down the hall. I saw Lorenzo, khloe, and David standing outside the ladies bathroom. Shit they were waiting on me. I made eye contact with David and a flash of pain flickered in his eyes when he saw me.
“I left my phone in the theater, can you and Khloe go look for it while I go get another slushy,” David said to Lorenzo as I turned back and hid behind a wall.
“Oh my gosh, David.” Khloe scoffed as she and Lorenzo went back to the theater. I heard footsteps come up next to me, turning I saw David leaning on the corner next to me. He held out a napkin to me.
“What is this for?” I asked, turning in front of him.
“Your eyes, it looks like you've been crying.” he opened his phone to the camera and held it up to my face. It did, my eyes were red and my nose was pink. There was a small shine on my water line that looked like tears.
“I wasn't crying.” I pushed away his phone and napkin. I walked around David to see Khloe and Lorenzo walking our way. I heard David let out a sigh.
“We couldn't find it.” Lorenzo passed me and went right to David as Khloe followed.
“I know it was in my pocket, sorry,” he said to Lorenzo while pulling Khloe close to him.
“Did you not want a slushie?” Khloe looked up at him wrapping her arm around David's waist.
“I decided not to.” he kissed her on the head. Lorenzo grabbed my left arm harshly but didn't look at me, he was looking straight ahead with a blank face. Shit, I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear and held onto his wrist with my right hand. his grip hurt but not too excruciating, it was tolerable and deserved. After a few minutes, I got a text from my mom saying she was outside to pick us up. When we were walking out I stopped Lorenzo at the door. The other two had already gotten in the car. This was my chance to break up with him, to be free.
“Lorenzo-”
“Stop being problematic.” He cut me off.
It was silent, he wouldn't face me. I stood there in shock waiting for him to look at me. He never did.
“What..?” my voice was shaky and I felt my eyes fill with tears. My shoulders shook and I felt my legs tremble. I wiped my eyes and looked at the tile floor. Lorenzo wasn't going to answer me, he knew I understood. I didn't want to be problematic, far from it.
“We aren't breaking up…” I felt a sting in my chest when he began again. “Whatever you feel is a misunderstanding. I've done nothing to you, so suck it up.”
I didn't know what to feel, anger? I had made it obvious I didn't wanna be with him but it looked like he trapped me before I could leave. He looked down at me, zero emotion on his face except for a twitch at his mouth and his eyebrows bent. Fine, if that's what you want Lorenzo, I'll play your game. I put on my best poker face.
“I was gonna say I had a good time.” I smiled at him as a tear rolled down my warm cheek. His face quickly changed and fear took over his emotions. Before he could say another word I turned away and walked to the car. After a second I heard his feet follow. I got in the car and he slid in beside me. This time I made it more clear I did not want him touching me at all. There was no conversation the whole ride home. we dropped off David then we went to drop off Lorenzo. Once at his house I got out and walked him to his door.
“I'm sorry,” he said and opened his arms for a hug. I put my hand up and pressed his chest away.
“Goodnight Lorenzo.” I turned away and walked back to the car. Clutching the sleeve of my shirt. I didn't look back, what was the point? Yes, I was trying to break up with him but he didn't know that. He stood there and accused me of being problematic, even worse he told me I was forced to stay with him. He won though, I'm still with him. The moment that made me realize it was gonna be impossible to break up with him.
Once we got home I went straight to the kitchen and chugged a glass of water. I felt as if I was going to throw up.
“Hope you had fun sweetie!” my mom said as she hugged me. “I'm going to bed goodnight.”
“Goodnight Mom.” she walked out of the modern swing door turning off the lights on her way out.
I leaned back over the sink and took another sip. Tears in my eyes blurred my vision. I blinked and they dropped onto my cheeks. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text.
Lorenzo: I love you, goodnight.
I was sad and angry, confused and hurting all at once. I ignored him and went to my voicemail. I saw a missing call from Anthony.
