Episode 18

Beryl and Frederick walk through the palace garden, although they feel watched, and that's because some priests still don't believe in the omega, while others are convinced every day that he is the goddess's envoy. As they stroll, they see the queen leaving a room, saying goodbye to the cardinal, but when the woman sees them, she doesn't hesitate to approach them. Beryl doesn't even bow; after all, that witch is the one who kept him locked up until the day of the sacrifice.

"I didn't think I'd see you again, young Ferreli; I'm sorry about what happened to you before," the queen says.

"You regret it? It's hard to believe you do. You and the counts took advantage of my weakness and handed me over without mercy. Don't blame me if the goddess unleashes her wrath on you," he says with a sly smile.

Taking advantage of the fact that the priests were not around, he would get some revenge on that old woman.

"Why would the goddess be angry with me? You wouldn't be her envoy if we hadn't sent you," she replies, a little annoyed.

"Even so, you are complicit in the sacrifices, and the goddess, although compassionate, is also vengeful. Fear, sinner, for she has a destiny in store for you," he says, staring into her eyes.

The queen feels a chill run through her body at the omega's gaze, but before she can say anything, he and Frederick continue on their way.

Later in the palace, Harris notices that his mother returned nervously and locked herself in her room. He tells Alison about this because her mother had gone to the temple.

"My parents also came back distressed; they say they went to apologize to Beryl, but he ordered the cardinal to throw them out. My parents regret what they did; I think Beryl was cruel to have them thrown out without listening to them," she says sadly.

She, too, was upset with her parents, but they apologized, and when they learned she was going to look for the dragon sword, they asked her to at least recover Beryl's body to give him a proper burial. Of course, Alison believed their regret was genuine. Harris takes Alison's hand in his.

"Your brother will understand that you cannot live with resentment. If he is the goddess's envoy, his heart must forgive," he consoles her.

"That's true, Your Highness is right; I know my brother will understand," she says with a smile.

"He will, he just needs time. Besides, if the goddess chose him, it's because he has a kind and forgiving heart." Harris wants Alison to feel better and not suffer for what happened with her parents.

Beryl has met with the cardinal, as the latter wants the boy to be comfortable. If he is the goddess's envoy, they must treat him as best they can, although he needs to know why he has asked for the sacrifices to stop, as it is something that has been done since the beginning of time.

"The dragon feeds on mana, so it doesn't need any more sacrifices. Besides, the goddess has never asked for sacrifices; she has never asked for blood to be shed in her name," Beryl explains.

"Since ancient times, our ancestors have offered sacrifices to the dragon. If they didn't, the dragon would take away their protection."

"That's not true, the dragon wouldn't abandon them; it serves the goddess. The goddess knows that there are evil people in the temple; they twisted everything." He shows a sad expression. "When the dragon told them that it didn't want sacrifices, the ancestors sacrificed hundreds of women in the name of a false god. They didn't understand that the dragon would protect them without sacrifices."

"Impossible, you can't say that, you can't accuse my ancestors; they would never offer sacrifices to a false god," the cardinal says, agitated.

"It's the truth; the goddess is upset. I sent them the dragon to protect them, but they never listened to it. It didn't kill the maidens; it protected them. Your ancestors have angered the goddess; she has sent me to speak the truth and eradicate evil," he says earnestly.

The cardinal is silent at Beryl's words. Of course, he knows about those sacrifices of the past, but until now, no one else has sacrificed anyone in the name of other gods; they faithfully serve their goddess, only they kept silent about the dark past of the temple to be able to continue protecting the kingdom; they believed that the dragon truly needed the sacrifice. The cardinal kneels with his head down, begging the goddess's forgiveness for the horrible past of his temple, but asking her not to abandon them.

"I will tell the kingdom the truth, but even if they repudiate the temple, please ask the goddess not to abandon the kingdom," the old man pleads.

Beryl is surprised. He thought this man was hiding everything because he was evil, but there he is, asking for his people in exchange for telling the truth. Still, it is not easy to forgive the damage they have done, but he understands that it was their ancestors, not him.

"I am sure the goddess will hear your prayers, my lord. She will forgive those who speak the truth," Beryl replies.

"So be it, all for the protection of the kingdom," he says, bowing his head further.

After that strange meeting, Beryl tells Frederick everything, who was silent.

"Do you think he's really sorry?" Beryl asks. "He seemed sincere, but I don't trust him."

"I don't know what to think. It's true that it's all because of his ancestors, but they kept up the tradition. If I were really draining mana from women, how many do you think would be dead by now? You can't easily forgive something like that," Frederick replies.

"True, we have to investigate further; something's not right. Besides, I'm thinking of getting revenge." He rubs his hands together. "Hee, hee, hee, hee."

"Too much resentment in that…skinny body," Frederick mocks.

"Shut up, don't think that just because you're tall… What else do you have? You're just handsome, young, wealthy, powerful, muscular, broad-chested, strong legs…but nothing else," he replies.

"I thought you were insulting me, not complimenting me," he jokes again.

Beryl throws a pillow at him and walks out of the room, better to roam the temple in search of anything suspicious.

NOTE: Who looked up the song Beryl sang? What did you think? Personally, I love it; it's been one of my favorites since it came out, and it's always on my playlist ❤️
