The priests continued to be perplexed; how was it possible for the goddess to send that omega as her messenger? Yet, they were sure of one thing: it wasn't a lie. The dragon was in their service, and furthermore, he had used the sacred spell, which no ordinary human could do.
“That omega could cause us trouble; we cannot allow him to live.”
“We must eliminate him. The goddess is the one who asked us to deliver the sacrifice to the dragon; it’s impossible for her to forbid it now.”
“It must be a ruse; that omega must have done something to survive.”
“Silence! We cannot dispose of him. Are you out of your minds? If he is the goddess's chosen, she will punish us if we harm him,” scolded the cardinal.
The priests fell silent, but they still weren't convinced that the goddess had sent an omega. If she wanted a representative, she should have chosen someone from the temple or a pure maiden.
Beryl, on his part, requested the most comfortable room, for the goddess's envoy must have a peaceful place to rest. Naturally, they gave him a spacious room with a private bathroom and an excellent view.
However, he glanced behind and saw Frederick lounging on the sofa comfortably.
"Why are you here? They’ve given you a room," he asked angrily.
"I’m your husband; I can enter this room. I like the view and it has more light," Frederick pointed out, gesturing toward the windows.
"Yours is also nice. Come on, shu, shu... get off the sofa and put your paws down," he waved his hands as if shooing a dog.
"What annoys you? In my castle, you act as if it's yours."
Beryl hissed at him before going into the bathroom, needing to change out of those clothes. Fortunately, he had brought a more comfortable outfit, but he needed to ask the priests for more clothing. When he emerged from the bathroom, Frederick was gone; it seemed he had only come to annoy him.
Beryl stepped out of his room in search of a servant and found a priest. He asked the priest to fetch him more clothes, but the priest was indignant at the request, stating that they were not his servants and the temple would not spend on an omega.
“Omega sent by the goddess. Are you truly sure you want to incur the deity's wrath?” Beryl exhibited sparks in his hands.
The priest stepped back and said that he would have a servant fetch it for him. There was no doubt he would lead a life of a king in that place, terrifying those crazies.
The next day, a maid arrived with a box of clothes and shoes for Beryl. She also informed him that she would serve him during his stay at the temple and that the counts Farreli wished to see him. Beryl fell into silence but decided to receive them; he was guided by the maid named Sara. Upon entering the chamber, the count approached, extending his arms.
“My son, how joyful it is to know you have returned,” the count said.
“Son? Sir, I believe you are mistaken; I was just a servant in your house,” he replied seriously.
“What are you saying? You know I am your father; we are your family,” he laughed nervously.
And since it was not a private chamber, priests were coming and going, and if they heard Beryl deny them, they would lose the prestige of being the parents of the goddess's chosen.
“Do not be insolent; we raised you for years, and it hurt us to hand you over. But thanks to that, you are the goddess's envoy; you have the honor of bringing pride to the Farreli family,” the countess remarked.
“Ma'am, I still have the scars on my back from the lashes you gave me. What fault did I have for being the fruit of infidelity?” Beryl covered his face, sobbing, and fell to his knees on the floor.
This caught the attention of the priests, especially the cardinal arriving.
“What is happening here? Count Ferreli, why is the young man crying?”
“Milord, they are claiming the young man, saying they raised him, but the young man has said that the countess beat him,” the maid answered.
“Do not get involved, servant!” the countess shouted.
Beryl shrank back in fear at the countess's shout, hugging himself tightly.
“No, please, ma’am, don't hit me,” he cried.
The cardinal looks at the counts, while the maid helps Beryl to her feet, assuring her that no one will harm her.
"Countess, lower your voice. I think it’s clear that the young man is afraid of you."the cardinal claims.
"That is not true, my lord, he is just acting..."the count tries to justify himself.
"And how do you explain this?"Frederick had arrived and embraced Beryl, allowing everyone to see only her bare back, the scars evident and clearly made by a whip, some older, others seemingly made only a few months ago.
Those present were astonished by what they saw, and soon whispers arose, saying that the counts were cruel, having harmed one who is now the envoy of the goddess.
"He is a pure young man, seeking no vengeance despite the harm inflicted upon him."
"That is why the goddess has chosen him; he has suffered, yet he is not lacking in goodness."
"The chosen one is innocent and has lived a sad life; the goddess has taken pity on him."
The counts did not know where to hide their faces.
"Counts Farreli, I ask you not to approach the young envoy of the goddess; I will not allow you to harm him, for he is a sacred being of the temple."the cardinal speaks.
Immediately, he orders the guards to remove the counts from the palace, while Frederick has covered Beryl with his cloak and she sobs against his chest.
"Do not worry, young Beryl; the temple will protect you from those sinners."the cardinal informs her.
With that said, the cardinal orders everyone to return to their duties while asking Frederick to take Beryl to her room to ensure she is calm. The counts stormed out of the temple, indignant that Beryl had exposed them; they believed they deserved prestige for having raised Beryl.
