Episode 12

Lucas - Hey, friend, I have a crazy idea.

Daniela - Oh, no, don't start with your craziness, Lucas, this is a serious situation.

Lucas - Just listen, friend, what if you go to Spain? I have a cousin there, he's not as handsome as me, but you could marry him.

Both: Whaaat? Are you crazy?!

Lucas - That's why I said it was a crazy idea, but let me finish, okay? You get there, you get married, and when your mom looks for you, you'll already be married, and if she manages to find you, you won't be alone, you'll have a husband to defend you. Haven't you ever heard the phrase "married for protection"? It would be something like that.

Andrea - Are you crazy? I'm not looking for marriage, I just want to get away from my mom, to find stability.

Lucas - And what better way than with a husband who supports you? I know my cousin would be at your feet. You're a strong, independent, loving, intelligent, hardworking woman. You're worth a thousand, my friend.

Daniela - It's not a bad idea, friend.

Andrea - Seriously, Dani, you're going to support him in this madness?

Daniela - He has a good point, friend. Wherever you go you'll be alone without us, it wouldn't hurt to have someone to support you, and what better way than with your husband?

Andrea - Are you two crazy?

Lucas - Come on, friend, my cousin isn't that bad. He's handsome. At least think about it, okay?

Andrea - Go away, my mom will be here soon. Please do everything you can to get Nana out.

Daniela - Okay, okay, but think about it, friend. I agree with Lucas, okay?

Andrea - Once you're out with Nana, call me. I'll sign the discharge papers for some patients so I can go straight to the airport. I love you guys.

Lucas - You're not going to leave without saying goodbye, are you?

Andrea - I'll find a way to see you to say goodbye.

We leave the office and I go straight to the nurse on duty to ask for the patients' discharge papers so I can sign them. I remember little Dante, who I still need to see, and I head over there when my cell phone rings. I look at the caller ID (Mom).

Andrea - Tell me, Mom.

Margarita (Mom) - Do you have the money ready?

Andrea - Yes, Mom.

Margarita (Mom) - Good. I'm at the entrance, we're waiting for you.

Andrea - I'm coming, Mom.

I turn on my heel to start walking when I feel myself bump into something hard, or rather someone, and what a man! A whole Greek god. Tall, brown hair, honey-colored eyes, broad shoulders and full lips that I get lost in, wanting to taste them. I wake up from my bubble when he asks:

Alexander - Are you okay?

Andrea - Y-yes, thank you. (God, I even stammered a little.) Sorry, I didn't see you, I'm a little distracted.

Alexander - Don't worry, I wasn't looking where I was going either. Could you help me? I'm looking for Dr. Smith.

Andrea - (Surprised, me? I think.) Uh, at your service.

Alexander - Are you her?

Andrea - Were you expecting someone else?

Alexander - No, of course not, it's just that I'm surprised that I almost ran over the doctor who's treating my brother.

Andrea - Mm... your brother? Who is your... but I don't finish asking when my cell phone rings again, and I know beforehand who it is. Sorry, I have to see my mom. If your brother is in my last round, I'll be sure to see him in a moment, otherwise a colleague will see him.

Alexander - Do you mind if I wait for you here?

Andrea - Uh? No, of course not.

Alexander - Okay, I'll wait for you then.

I walk down the hall to my office, grab the bag with the money, and walk out to the entrance of the hospital, where I can see Carlos and my mom with their backs to me. She's quite upset. Look, I approach and slap, she slaps me.

Andrea - What's wrong, Mom? Why did you hit me?

Margarita (Mom) - Shut up, Andrea. You made us wait too long.

Andrea - Mom, I remind you that I'm on work time and I have patients to see.

Margarita (Mom) - Yeah, well, give us the money so we can get out of this place.

Andrea - This is the last thing I'm giving you to pay off debts, Mom.

Margarita (Mom) - You horrible little brat, you're going to help your mother when she's in need. Do you understand? Or your dear Nana disappears and you'll never hear from her again, do you understand?

Andrea - Yes, Mom. I just want to know why you hate me so much. I'm your daughter!

Margarita (Mom) - Ha, ha, ha. Stop with the drama. Didn't you have to go see your dead people? Now go back to work, Andrea.

I enter the hospital with my eyes watering, holding back tears. I would like to forget everything and be happy. I continue walking down the hall when I hear:

Alexander - Are you okay?

Andrea - Uh, yes, yes, thank you.

Alexander - Are you sure? (And he looks at me with those honey-colored eyes that I loved from the moment I saw them.)

Andrea - Yes, don't worry. Tell me, how can I help you?
