The next morning arrived with a clear, bright sky. Sunlight filtered through the thin curtains, casting a warm glow across the luxurious rooms of Ardent Palace. Prince Adrian, already dressed in his formal clothes, paced back and forth in his study. The events of the night before stayed in his mind, especially the mysterious presence of Elara.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts. “Enter,” he said, his voice steady.
Lord Cedric stepped inside, bowing slightly. “Your Highness, the council meeting is about to begin.”
Adrian nodded and ran a hand through his hair. “Very well. Let’s go.”
The council chamber was very different from the ball. Here, serious decisions that affected the kingdom were made, and the room carried a heavy, serious air. The council members, a mix of experienced nobles and sharp advisors, took their seats as Adrian entered.
The meeting began. They discussed everything from the kingdom’s security to trade agreements with neighboring lands. Adrian stayed focused, but his thoughts kept drifting back to Elara. Her calm way of speaking, her thoughtful words—they had left an impression he couldn’t shake.
When the meeting ended, the council members filed out. Adrian turned to Cedric. “I want to know more about Lady Elara,” he said firmly.
Cedric raised an eyebrow but nodded. “Of course, Your Highness. I will find what I can.”
Meanwhile, Elara walked through the palace corridors, careful to move gracefully. The palace felt so different from her simple life, and though she held herself well, she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. She paused to glance at a statue, letting her fingers brush its cold stone surface for a moment.
She soon found herself in the gardens, a peaceful place filled with flowers and fountains. Walking slowly among the blooms, her thoughts turned to Prince Adrian. There was something about him she wanted to understand, a depth that drew her in.
“Enjoying the gardens, Lady Elara?” a voice said softly.
She turned and saw Adrian a few steps away, the morning light softening his sharp features. “They are beautiful,” she replied, brushing a stray hair behind her ear. “A welcome escape from all the palace grandeur.”
Adrian walked closer, hands clasped behind his back. “I find the gardens peaceful too. They are a rare calm in the chaos of court life.”
Elara smiled, feeling the honesty in his words. “I can see why you come here.”
They stood in silence for a moment, the gentle rustling of leaves around them. Adrian finally spoke, curiosity in his tone. “Tell me, Lady Elara, what brings you to our court? You are…different from the others.”
Elara met his gaze steadily, a small hint of mystery in her eyes. “I am here to help Lord Faelan with his diplomatic work. My skills are modest, but he values them.” She folded her hands in front of her.
Adrian studied her, noticing the care in her words. “There is more to you than meets the eye, Elara. I can feel it.”
Elara’s smile was quiet, almost playful. “Perhaps we all have secrets, Your Highness. Some just show more than others.”
Before Adrian could reply, a messenger hurried up, bowing low. “Your Highness, you are urgently needed in the council chamber.”
Adrian let out a small sigh but nodded. “Duty calls.” He looked back at her. “Until next time, Lady Elara.”
Elara inclined her head politely. “Until next time, Prince Adrian.”
As Adrian walked briskly back to the council chamber, his mind stayed with Elara. She was a puzzle he wanted to solve, a light in the shadows of his complicated life.
