A First Glance

As the cold breeze roamed through the atmosphere and brushed against my face, I looked up to observe the sky. My eyes caught sight of the constellations—silent companions that held many fond memories for me.

Highland is one of the most prestigious universities in our country. I was fortunate to be accepted, even though I had completely wrecked my interview.

On the first day, as I entered the university gate, a girl approached me and said,

"Hi, are you a new student? My name is Miku, and I’m in the management faculty."

"Hello, I’m Daisy. I think we’re in the same faculty," I replied.

Since she had arrived a few hours earlier, she kindly offered to show me around. Later, we discovered we had been assigned to the same hostel—and not only that, we were roommates too. To sum it up, she became my first friend at Highland. That day helped us settle into our new environment with a bit more ease.

The next morning, the sound of an alarm clock jolted me awake. It was 5 a.m. I got out of bed, freshened up, and got dressed. We had breakfast around 6:30 a.m., and after returning to the hostel, Miku and I prepared for our first classes. From that day on, this routine continued for about three months.

As the third month neared its end, rumours began to circulate about a merger between our university and a newly established one. Unaware of what was coming, I found myself feeling oddly excited.

Finally, the day arrived. The two universities officially merged, and the new name became New Highland. As a result, many new students joined our faculty. In our class alone, twenty new faces appeared. On the first day after the merger, I heard a girl shout across the hallway,

“Does anyone know which class Eric got accepted into?”

Like a moth drawn to light, I found myself strangely captivated by that name.

It took about a week for everyone to settle in. After that, only three months remained until the end of our first semester, and naturally, everyone began focusing on their studies. We had countless papers to write and presentations to prepare. The workload was intense—so many assignments that we barely had time for ourselves. Time flew by, and before we knew it, exam week had arrived. After completing our exams, we were promoted to the next semester.

A new semester meant a fresh start. Classrooms were reassigned, and students were shuffled. Miku and I ended up in different classes.

One day in late winter, as I was leaving my classroom, I heard someone call out,

“Eric, wait a minute! I’m coming with you!”

As I stepped into the corridor, I spotted a boy standing ahead. He had a light brown complexion, curly black hair, and wore glasses. At first glance, he looked like a typical nerd—but his confident posture and stylish outfit suggested otherwise. The book in his hand, the slight smile on his face, and the breeze tousling his hair made him look effortlessly attractive.

I was so captivated by him that I didn’t even notice my friend calling me to move away from the door.

Even though I only saw him for a few seconds, something inside me whispered with certainty:
