No time like Today 2

After almost a minute pause

‘Hey…’ I say with a solemn face

She smiles politely

but her eyes…

Those eyes…

I take her in as she says,

'Congratulations on your big achievements’

'Thank you,’ I murmur,

as I try hard to look away from her, but I am too captivated to do so.

She fidgets, as if sensing my gaze, and I turn my eyes towards the exit for a moment

'I am so happy for you, you have achieved such a great success, I could literally say, all your dreams have come true'’

My dreams….

I am dazed at the mention of it, my mind takes me couple of years back. But I recover from

it quickly.

I give the shortest reply

possible, ‘Sure I am’

She sighs this time, and looks straight into my eyes

‘Luke, I am glad to see you today.’

‘I am too’ I reply, and she nods,

‘Will I be seeing you tomorrow too?’ she enquires

And I know where this is going, and I shouldn’t let it happen, I

shouldn’t do this.

But all my pros and cons go straight to trash as she enquires again,

‘Will I, Luke?’

‘Sure, ofcourse…. Whenever you are free… uhm you know where to find me’

I regret saying that, but her eyes brighten with hope and my heart

relaxes at the sight.

What I have done is sinfully wrong, but what I feel is just right

in all the ways.

‘I thought I won’t be seeing you any time soon’ she says, hurt audible in her

voice.

‘No time like today’ I

reply

She nudges towards the

exit gate and says,

‘Seems you haven’t

changed at all. Still want to avoid crowded place, like old times?’

‘Old habits die hard’ I

smirk, then shrug, look at the exit gate, and tip my head towards the door and

say,

‘I will be off then’

she replies with a nod.

And soon, again, I am treading

towards the door eager to get out of this place.

And as soon as I am

out of the door I breathe in the fresh air and it feels like eternity since I

have actually breath.

When I lie on my bed

that night the only thought that consumes me, is of Susan, her eyes

was a museum of memories, each exhibit has carefully reminded me of the

delightful days, which was supposed to turn into faded memory.

She could let things go, but I could only wish to do the same.

I open my bed-side drawer to find the only material that feels like home, the

locket, which I have preserved for years, the only thing that has bought

comfort, support and at times hope to move forward.

I feel the metal on my rough fingers and soon I am taken back to the blissful

memories of my life. Blissful memories of 3 years ago.
