Hired as Her Husband
"Please enjoy your meal." Said a handsome man as he placed the customer's order.
"Can I have your number?" Asked a high school girl in uniform to the handsome man. The hysterical screams of her friends made the handsome man smile thinly.
"Sorry, I swing the other way." He replied and walked away, leaving the customers surprised by his answer.
Zayn, a twenty-one year old man. He worked in a cafe owned by his friend. His good looks made any woman admire him. Not only that, many openly expressed their liking for Zayn. It's just that, Zayn always refused in a slightly extreme way. Where, he would always say he 'swung the other way' so that women would no longer be interested in him.
"You're crazy! Be careful telling them that you're gay!" Exclaimed a man with glasses to Zayn, who came closer to him.
"Oh my God, Ki… Ki…, if I don't do that, they'll keep asking for my number. That's the only way! You don't know how tiring it is to be handsome," said Zayn confidently.
Riki, Zayn's friend, immediately glared cynically. He admitted that Zayn was handsome, but wasn't he too? Well, even if it was only half handsome. Riki and Zayn had been friends for a long time, even since they were in junior high school. Now, both of them worked in the same cafe as waiters.
"Having one girlfriend is not a problem, aren't you tired of being single for decades?" Riki said while patting Zayn's shoulder.
"Haaah… I've never thought about it, Ki, my life has a lot of problems. It's just an added burden if I'm in a relationship, not to mention the girl demanding this and that. I want to focus on Grandma's recovery first. You know? She's the only family I have," Zayn replied as he cleaned up the empty glasses and took them to the kitchen.
Riki was silent, he looked at Zayn who was back taking orders. Riki was amazed by his best friend's persistence. Where, Zayn had to support his grandmother who was suffering from liver cancer. Making the handsome man had to work extra hard to finance his grandmother's treatment. The salary they received, of course, was still not enough for the treatment costs.
"Zayn, how about you look for a job with a bigger salary? For example, in a company?" Riki suggested.
Zayn raised the right corner of his lips, "Being what? A janitor?" He joked.
"Duh, you're smart. I'm sure you'll be accepted into the company, rather than working as a waiter like this. The salary is only three million, if you work in a company, it can be up to seven million. Promotion, could be even more," Riki persuaded.
Zayn was silent, he did intend to quit his current job and look for a better job. However, many people said that applying for a job at a company was very difficult to be accepted without an inside connection. What could Zayn, who was just an ordinary man who had only ever worked as a waiter, do?
"Here, take a look, the Wiratama company is opening vacancies. Try it, who knows, it might be your lucky day," said Riki, showing a piece of news from his cellphone.
"I'm only a high school graduate, Ki, I won't pass. They're definitely looking for graduates, what am I? Just an iced cappuccino," Zayn refused with a little joke.
Riki shook his head, he pulled his phone back and turned it off. Actually, Zayn was a bright student, in fact he had always been ranked first since elementary school. Unfortunately, he couldn't continue his studies due to limited funds. As for scholarships, Zayn failed to get one.
"I'm going back to work," Zayn said goodbye and walked away from there.
Riki shook his head slowly, "Zayn... Zayn... you're handsome, smart, but you always overthink. Let alone me who's just mediocre. Just be grateful for life." he muttered softly.

Finished working, Zayn returned to his house. A shabby house located in the slums of the capital city. With a smile that always appeared on his lips, the man intended to open the door of his house. Seeing Zayn's presence, a girl came closer and patted the man's shoulder gently.
"Brother Zayn,"
Zayn turned, he looked at the short-haired girl with a surprised look. "Eh Lita, what's wrong?" He asked as he got rid of his surprised expression.
"Grandma is not at home, Brother, she fainted in the bathroom earlier. So Lita and mom took Grandma to the hospital," said the girl named Lita, which made Zayn's face turn pale.
"Grandma fainted?! Which hospital was she taken to?!" Zayn shouted with a flushed face holding back his tears.
"Lentera Kasih Hospital, but Grandma was..."
Without waiting for Lita to finish her words, Zayn immediately ran away. Leaving Lita who looked at his departure with a heavy sigh. Maybe, Zayn was too worried. So he ignored the rest of her words.
Zayn then boarded public transportation to get to the intended hospital. He didn't have any vehicle, so he had to take public transportation or walk. Usually when he worked, Riki picked him up. He didn't have a lot of money to buy a vehicle.
Arriving at the hospital, Zayn immediately asked the receptionist where his grandmother's room was. "Tulip Room number thirteen? Okay, thank you, Nurse." Zayn said and ran to the room the nurse had told him.
Arriving at his grandmother's treatment room, Zayn looked for his grandmother's bed among the beds in the room. Until, his steps stopped in the corner of the room. Where, his grandmother was lying weakly on the bed accompanied by a middle-aged woman. Seeing Zayn's arrival, the woman immediately got up from her seat.
"How is Grandma, Ma'am?" Zayn asked in a half whisper, worried that his grandmother's rest would be disturbed by him.
"Her condition is getting worse, the doctor was looking for you earlier. He wanted to convey something about your grandmother's condition. Since you're here, I'll go home," said the middle-aged woman.
Zayn nodded, "Thank you, Mrs. Devi, and I'm sorry, Zayn hasn't been able to pay the rent yet. Later, when Zayn gets paid..."
"Don't worry about it, take care of your grandmother first. In that case, I'll go home," she interrupted.
Mrs. Devi was the owner of the rented house that Zayn lived in, she and her family were very kind to Zayn and his grandmother. Sometimes, Zayn felt bad because he was always behind on rent payments. However, Mrs. Devi always gave him leeway to pay it. Lita, Mrs. Devi's daughter, also always came to see Grandma's condition while Zayn was working.
"Are you Dian's grandson?" Asked the doctor who suddenly came to see Zayn.
"Yes, doctor, that's right. I'm Dian's grandson, how is my grandmother's condition, doctor?" Zayn asked with red eyes holding back the tears that were about to fall.
"Didn't I tell you to routinely take your grandmother to chemo? The liver cancer she is suffering from has reached stage four. You haven't forgotten what I said before, have you?" Explained the doctor, which made Zayn bow his head.
"I don't have the money, doctor, Grandma's treatment is very expensive," Zayn said softly, wiping away his tears that finally fell.
The doctor sighed slowly, then patted the shoulder of the young man in front of him. All this time, he knew Zayn and his grandmother well. The young man in front of him loved his grandmother very much. "I hope you are given convenience. For now, your grandmother is weak. I have given her an IV and also injected vitamins," said the doctor.
"But doctor, the cost..."
"Save it for the next chemo, I can't help much," interrupted the doctor which made Zayn slumped weakly.
