Nathan:
After introducing Maya to the company, we went to the hospital. I wanted to show my grandmother that I had fulfilled her request. Grandma was delighted with her; she even asked for great-grandchildren! But I won't be able to fulfill that request. I can't touch Maya and then divorce her, ruining her dream of marrying as a virgin. And even if she weren't a virgin, how could I have a child with a woman I wouldn't be with for the rest of my life? This whole thing about having children separately is very sad because the child always suffers in some way, even if their parents are friends. I realized that my grandmother had made Maya leave the room on purpose.
"You can tell me, Mrs. Amber, what is it?"
"Don't play dumb with me, Nathan. Where did you get this girl? She wasn't your girlfriend, I'm sure of it."
"Grandma, I..."
"Tell the truth. I hate lies."
And I ended up having to reveal the whole truth. I had never lied to my grandmother, and I wouldn't start now that she was on her deathbed.
"I want to live many years, so… She's lovely and perfect, the ideal woman to marry."
"Grandma!"
"If you can't get a wife the right way, I'll accept this the wrong way. I have one more request: sign the house over to her, put it in her name. I don't want your aunt trying to take possession of it when I'm gone. So prepare the lawyers, I'm going to donate the house to her while I'm still alive."
"Are you sure about this, Grandma? I have a very strong attachment to that house. It's where I was born."
"You'll continue living there for the rest of your life. I have a feeling this is the woman of your life. I'm sure you'll never divorce her. And one more thing, don't tell her that I already know about this whole story. I want her to think I'm still in the dark. And I have a feeling I might be able to live there with you for a while longer. My stay there will be interesting."
"What are you planning, Mrs. Amber?"
"If you planned a wedding behind my back, you have no right to know my plans."
I shook my head. I'm sure she's going to do something when she gets back home. I want to know, and I'm happy about it. The doctors told me she was giving up on life, and if she's looking for reasons to stay alive, even if it's just to mess with me, I'll be happy to have her back home.
Maya returned to the room, and she started giving me all sorts of advice. And all I wanted to know was how she found out that Maya had suffered a disappointment because she practically told me everything she had been through. But my grandmother was like that, full of intuition; what she said happened. I'm sure I'll get scolded later; she'll think I told her about Maya's life. The afternoon went by so fast that I didn't even notice. The two of them spent the whole afternoon whispering secrets while I was working on my cell phone. How I wish my grandmother would live many years with us! The two of them hit it off so well; they seemed like mother and daughter. This was the role my aunt should have been playing, taking care of my grandmother. But instead, I think she was just counting the seconds until my grandmother died so she could enjoy the inheritance.
"Let's go, Maya."
"Sure. It was an honor to meet you. I'll be back soon to see you."
"I think I'll be discharged before you come back to see me."
They said goodbye and we left. When we got home, everything was organized.
"Mrs. Ford, dinner is ready as you requested."
"Berta, Mrs. Amber spoke wonders about you. I'd like to see all the wonders she told me about. You don't need to be rude to me; I'm not here to hurt anyone."
For the first time, I saw Berta smile.
"Forgive me, ma'am. It's just that most of the women Mr. Nathan brought home were bitter and snobbish."
"And they attacked and humiliated you, didn't they? That's why the staff were afraid of me."
"Forgive us, ma'am. We didn't mean to be rude to you."
"I'm no different from you. A fat bank account and material possessions don't make us different. When we leave this life, we'll all go to the same hole and rot the same way. What will we take from this life? Having money doesn't make me better than any of you. I'm not attached to material things, Berta. I value respect and friendship, and if you, as Mrs. Amber says, are part of the family, that's how I want to treat you too. I apologize for being rude if I was rude to you."
"Welcome, ma'am."
And the two hugged each other emotionally, and even I was moved. I kept thinking about where I went wrong that I didn't realize that my ex-girlfriends were mistreating my employees. I'll have to take care of that if I bring other women here. I felt proud to see the way she treated Berta with respect and solidarity.
"I'm already jealous of this hug. Don't I deserve a hug, Berta?"
"Oh, come on, boy, you just got married and you're already needy. I think Mrs. Maya needs to pay more attention to you."
Maya blushed, so we made our way to the dining room.
"Berta, I trust your good taste for dinner, so from now on, you take care of things, okay? No need to ask."
"Thank you very much, Mrs. Maya."
Richard called me saying that everything was ready for the party, just need to set the date for him to send out the invitations.
"It can be tomorrow. The sooner the world knows I'm married to this woman, the better."
Tomorrow night will be the beginning of the downfall of those who humiliated Maya...
