The Long Hidden Ethereal Messages
The female team of Putra Bangsa’s basketball team competed between the basketball
teams around Jakarta. As expected, the team won the competition as usual. They got the gold
medal for the competition. No one was surprised because everyone knew that the Putra Bangsa’s
female basketball team was really beyond belief and incredible. The team, led by the girl who
had wavy black hair, headed for the locker room with cheers of admiration from the audience.
At the same time, a girl with the glasses on, ponytail, and wearing the pink cardigan seemed
to approach them.
Everyone on the audience seat looked very enthusiastic because they would be fed with
a good show everytime the two fairies of Putra Bangsa High School were together. It was
already known to everyone who they were and the fact that the two of them were not on good
terms. One was the captain of the team–Krystal Alayna Darmawan or Krystal for short. She
was very popular. It could be said that she was the apple of people’s eyes. Her presence was
always the talk of the crowd. Her sharp gaze could intimidate anyone who felt more inferior.
Well, it was undeniable that no one could beat her beauty. The other one who just came to the
court was Jessica Alaisya Darmawan, her twin sister. She was the smartest student in Putra
Bangsa. Everyone was aware of this fact. However, in everyone’s eyes, Jessica was just a
shadow to Krystal.
Jessica grabbed Krystal’s hand and said, “Congratulations, my beloved sister. As
expected, our Krystal won’t lose if it comes to basketball!”. However, Krystal with her cold
face slapped the hand and continued to walk to the locker room, completely ignoring her.
Jessica followed Krystal. Everyone who saw this didn't bat an eyelid. It was a common scene
when the twins met, but it couldn’t be helped that a low murmur could be heard from the
crowd.
“Don’t you think that Krystal is too harsh to her own sister?”
“I feel so sorry for Jessica.”
The crowd continued to talk about the twins.
In the room, Jessica shouted at Krystal, “Watch your actions, Krys. I was talking to you
and you just walked away and ignored me like that?!”
Krystal saw her twin sister with a deep look and then she said, “So, what am I supposed
to do? Should I smile happily like a fool just because a beautiful and smart sister of mine
congratulated me? Just mind your own business, Jess. I’m sick of your pretense.”
Jessica still wanted to say something, but then Krystal’s team entered the room. She
could only smile and wave happily before leaving the room. “See you at home my beloved
sister. I am so proud of you!” Krystal looked at Jessica's back which was getting further away.
She couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
At home, their mother had prepared lunch for her daughters. As soon as she heard a
sound at the front door, she went to welcome them. “Look, my beautiful princesses are home!
It is nice to see you, girls!”.
“Hello mom. What do we have for lunch?” Jessica approached a beautiful lady with a
brown apron who welcomed them. Different from Jessica, Krystal went to her room directly.
The lady looked at Krystal deeply. There was a trace of sadness in her eyes.
“Mom?” Jessica called again. The mother came back to her senses and answered, “I
cooked your favorite food, Jess. Do you want to eat now?” However, Jessica shook her head
weakly, “I am sorry, mom. My head hurts. I am a little bit tired.”
Her mother paled and looked so worried, “Oh my God, Jessica. Are you okay? What
happened??”
“Well, today…” Jessica then told her mother with a sad look on her face how Krystal
chased her away when she went to the basketball competition to congratulate her. Her mother
was silent for a moment before rubbing her head gently, “Don’t think about it too much.
Maybe your sister was tired from the competition. Go change your clothes and take your
medicine. You have to take a good rest after having lunch, okay?” Jessica nodded.
After changing her clothes, Krystal came downstairs to have lunch. Seeing that there
was her mother alone, she approached her cheerfully and wanted to pass the news.
“Mom, today on the basketball competition–”
“You won, I know.” her mother cut her off sharply. Krystal was silent. She didn’t
understand why her mother gave her a cold shoulder.
“Krystal, as an older sister, you have to take care of your sister. On top of that, you
know that your sister’s health is not good. Why are you still acting like that? Jess was hurt by
your attitude today.”
“Mom, before that, did you know the whole story?” Krystal tried hard to calm herself.
“I know. Jess told me everything.”
Hearing that, Krystal laughed. “I see.. No wonder you reacted this way! She must have
fabricated the story! And you believed that bitch–”
Plakk. The sound of a slap was heard. Krystal held her reddened cheek and looked at
her mother in disbelief. Her mother was full of emotion. She was mad at Krystal. “What did
you say? Watch your mouth, Krys. I don’t understand why you act like this. She is your
sister!” Krystal looked at her mother for a while then she left her house with tears sliding
down her cheeks.
“Where are you going?! Krys!! Come back!!”
Krystal ignored her and ran.
“Kai? Can you pick me up?” Krystal called her boyfriend and asked him to pick her up.
“Hey, baby. What’s wrong?” She didn’t explain the situation to her boyfriend “Just pick me
up, please” Said Krystal. “OK. I’ll go there.”
Jessica, who was silently enjoying the ‘show’ with a satisfied look on her face from the
second floor, slowly approached her mother after her sister left. “Mom, why did you slap
Krystal? We have to understand her. Maybe she is sick of taking care of me who is weak.
Mom, don’t be mad at Krystal, please.” said Jessica.
“Honey, you're too kind. I don't know why Krystal doesn't act like you” Krystal looked
at her mother and said, “Mom, I will talk to Krystal.” She went to the door and saw Krystal
with Kai.
Kai arrived at Krystal’s house.
“Come here baby, wear the helmet first!” Krystal smiled at her boyfriend and said
something to him, “Thanks for picking me up, Kai.” Kai still looked so worried but he was
also glad that he could see his girlfriend. “Let’s go, baby. Hold me tight!” Krystal rounded
her hand on Kai’s waist. They left Krystal’s house and strolled around the town.
Jessica watched the entire thing and was so envious, “That should be me who’s holding
Kai now.”
Kai and Krystal arrived at a cafe. This was their favorite place. The cafe with a white
walls made the atmosphere feel so calm and cozy. As usual, Kai ordered a cup of hot
chocolate and latte and brought them to their favorite spot.
“What happened?” Asked Kai
“No. It’s just a small problem, Kai. That’s fine” Krystal’s voice was calmer now.
“But your cheeks are red. Who slapped you?” Kai was so worried.
Krystal didn’t answer the question, letting the silence surround them. The mellow
music in the background added nothing to the atmosphere. The hot chocolate and latte slowly
became cold and they were still trapped in their own thoughts.
“Slip inside the eye of your mind…..” Finally, the silence was broken when the first
lyric of Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis was heard. Kai always used that song as his
phone’s ringtone.
“Wait a minute. I have to answer this call.” Kai got up and went to pick up the phone.
Krystal was curious as to who called Kai and why he needed to go far away just to answer the
call.
“Who was that?” She asked as soon as Kai took a seat.
He hesitated, but still answered, “Hmm.. It was Jack, Krys.”
Krystal felt cold immediately. “You sure? I saw Jessica’s name on your phone, Kai.
Why did you lie to me? You know I hate liars.”
Kai’s gaze was low. He didn’t dare to look at Krystal’s eyes. He felt so guilty. He
cursed at himself why he didn’t just tell the truth.
“Sorry. Yes, it was Jessica.”
“Why did you lie? Did you cheat on me?!”
“No! I didn't tell you because I know you will get mad at me. I have her phone number
because I want to know how you are at home and what happened. I really care about you,
Krys. And so is she. She called just now to know where you are.”
Kai tried to explain himself, but Krystal snorted as soon as she heard her boyfriend also
tried to stand for her sister. The atmosphere between them turned really bad and tense.
“If you care about me you should call me instead of Jessica, Kai. You can call and ask
me, not her!”, said Krystal to Kai.
“But you never tell me how you feel even if I have asked! You never even let me in for
a second in your life.”
“That’s just an excuse! You just want to call her, right!” Krystal couldn’t control her
emotion and she shouted at Kai.
“Hey, I know you’re in a black mood but you don’t have to shout at me. Everyone can
hear your voice, Krystal!” Krystal realized that her voice was too high “I’m sorry. I’m just
too emotional and I didn’t mean to shout at you.” Kai looked at Krystal deeply and waited for
her to calm down. “I’m sorry, Kai. I think we should call it a day. I need time to be alone. You
can go home first.” Kai was trying to understand Krystal and accepted her reason. “Alright
then, but let me drop you by your house first. I can’t leave you alone here.”
Krystal smiled and shook her head slowly, “I’m fine, trust me. You can go home first.
No need to worry, I know how to take care of myself. Besides, it is not that far from my
home.”
“Okay, I will go home. Please have a good time and pull yourself together. Don’t forget
to call me after you arrive.” He kissed Krystal's forehead before he left.
Krystal looked at her boyfriend’s back which was slowly disappearing. Suddenly, she
felt dizzy and the blood was flowing out of her nose. She already knew that her condition
took a turn for the worse but she hid it from everyone. Then she decided to ignore the pain
and went back home to take a rest.
“You are back? I thought you won’t come back. You're so childish, Krys. Just a little bit
of conflict and you ran away. You even troubled Kai by telling him to pick you up.” Jessica
rebuked Krystal with a cynical tone.
“What do you want? Why do you keep bothering my life?” said Krystal.
“It’s nothing. I just want you to apologize to mommy. She was worried, you know.” she
paused for a moment before continuing, “Also, don't bother Kai again with your silly
problems.”
Krystal was getting on her nerves and she tried to control her emotions. “For crying out
loud, can you stop?! How dare you say that? I will apologize to mom! But who are you
telling me not to bother Kai? It’s up to me. He is my boyfriend. If I bother him, it’s me and
Kai’s business not yours.” Before Jessica spoke, Krystal cut her off. “Oh, or do you like Kai
too? So you feel jealous when Kai only cares for me?”
Jessica laughs sarcastically. “YES, I LIKE HIM. I met him first! I knew him first! But
why is he going out with you? Besides being so popular and good at basketball, what’s so
good about you?! Kai must be dated you out of pity and take advantage of your popularity.
How can someone as good as Kai date a girl with a bad attitude like you?!”
Plakk…. Krystal slapped Jessica’s face. Her mother who happened to pass saw this
scene and was so shocked. She soon tried to separate them. She yelled at Krystal, “How can
you slap your sister! I have never taught you to behave like this!”
“Mom, why did you yell at me? Didn’t you see that THIS favorite daughter of yours is
the one who started this fight. You always defend her. You don’t even care a bit about me.”
Krystal was crying and felt very angry with everyone. Suddenly blood dripped from her nose.
She covered her nose and took the car keys to leave the house.
“Krystal, where are you going?” Her mom shouted at her and she was worried because
she saw the blood dripping from her daughter’s nose. Krystal ignored her mother and drove
the car very fast. She didn't even realize that there was a truck coming from the opposite
direction.
Brakkk ….. The car she was driving was thrown far away. She just closed her eyes and
accepted all the pain her body was feeling. Darkness hit her even more and voices buzzed in
her ears.
She smiled faintly and prayed, “God, I'm giving up. I’m so tired. Please put me into an
unfaltering sleep, a long slumber amid Your serenity. Our previously clenched hands must be
freed. I have to let go of the hold I wanted to reach. Please don't let their sorrow get the worst
of them. Please don't let them drown in their tears, even if they are flowing down to their
chin. Please grant them the fortitude and strength to move on with their lives.”
She gave up. The world was too harsh for Krystal. No one knew that she’s so much in
pain. She handled everything by herself. She cried alone. The one thing that she needed the
most was the love from her family.
Jessica and Krystal were born with weak hearts. Fortunately they got donors as soon as
possible when their condition worsened in Junior Highschool. After the heart transplant, it
was only Jessica who got her mother’s attention just because her condition was slightly
weaker than Krystal’s. Everytime Krystal complained about it, her mother always said
“Jessica is weaker than you. You should try to understand and comfort her as her sister.” Her
mother forgot that Krystal is only a human too who needed her love and attention too.
As time goes by, Krystal grew as an independent girl who never told anyone about her
pain, struggles, and worries. She became a strong girl but deep inside she was so fragile and
longed for love. Thankfully, she met a nice boy who became her boyfriend. Kai helped her go
through all the darkness. At least, in the end of her life she knew that she was genuinely loved
by a beautiful creature and that she was not alone.
Kring kring…
“Hello. Marinda’s speaking. Who is this?” the mother of the twin picked up the phone.
“Hello. Is this Marinda Darmawan, Krystal Alayna Darmawan’s mother?” the voice on
the other end answered.
“Yes, that’s right. Is there something wrong?” she suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable.
“This is from Medic Hospital. I’m deeply sorry to inform you of this. Your daughter,
Krystal Alayna Darmawan was involved in a car accident. Your child passed away at the
scene at 4:25 p.m. and is currently at Medic Hospital.” The phone in her hand fell. Her body
was shaking and a sound was ringing in her ears.
“Mom, what happened?” Asked Jessica who saw her mother crying. She picked up the
phone. “Hello. Jessica’s speaking. I’m her daughter. Who’s this? What happened?” Her voice
was calm, but after listening to the person speaking, tears flowed from their eyes. The regret
was so intense. Their world has been destroyed.
When they arrived at the hospital they immediately saw a doctor. The doctor also
explained the cause of Krystal's death. “I’m deeply sorry for your daughter, ma’am. She was
involved in a car accident at 4:25 pm. In addition, we found that she suffered from lymphatic
cancer in stadium 3. The body of deceased Ms. Darmawan can be seen in the morgue.”
After thanking the doctor, they went to the morgue immediately. Krystal's mother
removed the cloth that had been covering her face. The tears flowed even more seeing
Krystal lying stiffly in front of them. They remembered everything that happened between
them. They regretted everything. They cried over spilled milk, but still their tears couldn’t
couldn't make amends for what had happened.
“KRYSTAL” The door opened and Kai entered the morgue. “Krys, what are you
doing? Wake up! This is not funny, Krys. Wake up, please.” He was crying in front of the girl
that he loved deeply.
“Krys…”
That day… On the day of the death of the girl with black wavy hair, our whole world
was shattered. We got to see that girl lying on the ground. Seeing her back to God. She was
really gone for eternity.
***************
A few months later, they found three letters in Krystal’s treasure box when they wanted
to clean her room. Krystal enjoyed capturing moments through her camera’s lens, collecting
the pictures throughout her life in a small box. Everything inside the box brought the
