Chapter 4: Pasay City

Pasay City, a district known for its vibrant nightlife and bustling streets, was a stark contrast to the quieter outskirts where Benedict and Jenny had just completed their daring mission. The bright lights and constant flow of people provided a perfect cover for their movements. As they arrived at Jenny's small apartment, tucked away in one of the older, more discreet buildings, the weight of their recent adventure began to settle in.

"Welcome to my humble abode," Jenny said, pushing open the door and stepping inside. The apartment was modest, cluttered with gadgets, tools, and half-finished projects. Despite the chaos, it felt warm and lived-in.

Benedict followed her, carefully setting the time-travel device on a cleared space on the kitchen table. He glanced around, taking in the array of tech scattered throughout the room. "You live and breathe this stuff, don't you?" he remarked.

Jenny chuckled, shrugging off her jacket. "Pretty much. It's not just a job for me—it's a passion. And now, it looks like it might also be our key to understanding this device and getting you back to 2061."

Benedict nodded, his eyes fixed on the device. "We need to start by figuring out how it works. If we can understand the mechanics, we might be able to reverse the process and send me back."

Jenny moved to her workbench and grabbed a magnifying glass and a set of fine tools. "Alright, let's see what we're dealing with."

For the next several hours, they meticulously examined the device. Jenny's technical expertise and Benedict's knowledge of future technology complemented each other perfectly. They worked in silence, occasionally exchanging insights and observations.

As dawn approached, they finally stepped back, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of the device. "It's definitely more advanced than anything I've ever seen," Jenny said, rubbing her tired eyes. "But I think we're starting to make sense of it. There are temporal stabilizers here, quantum processors... It's like a miniaturized version of what I'd imagine a time machine to be."

Benedict nodded, equally exhausted but filled with a sense of progress. "If we can stabilize the temporal field it generates and control the coordinates, we should be able to pinpoint a return date."

Their conversation was interrupted by a sudden knock on the door. Jenny's eyes widened in alarm. "Were you followed?" she whispered.

Benedict shook his head, his expression turning serious. "I don't think so, but we can't be too careful."

Jenny moved cautiously to the door, peering through the peephole. She sighed in relief and opened it slightly. "It's just my neighbor, Mrs. Santos."

The elderly woman smiled warmly, holding a tray of freshly baked pastries. "Good morning, Jenny. I thought you might like some breakfast. You've been working all night again, haven't you?"

Jenny smiled, opening the door wider. "Thank you, Mrs. Santos. You're a lifesaver."

Mrs. Santos's eyes fell on Benedict, and she raised an eyebrow. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Ben," Jenny said smoothly. "He's helping me with a project."

Mrs. Santos nodded, giving Benedict a scrutinizing look before turning back to Jenny. "Well, don't work too hard, dear. And make sure you both eat something."

As she left, Jenny closed the door and locked it. "We need to be more cautious. If people start asking questions..."

Benedict nodded. "Agreed. We should keep a low profile while we figure this out."

They sat down with the pastries, allowing themselves a brief moment of respite. The warm, flaky crusts and sweet filling were a welcome comfort after the long night. "So, what's our next move?" Jenny asked between bites.

Benedict leaned back, considering their options. "We need more information. The device didn't just end up in that facility by accident. There's a larger conspiracy at play, one that spans decades. We need to find out who's behind it and why."

Jenny's eyes lit up with determination. "I know someone who might have answers. An old friend of my parents, Dr. Ernesto Reyes. He used to work on classified government projects before he went off the grid. If anyone can shed light on this, it's him."

Benedict's interest was piqued. "Do you know where to find him?"

Jenny nodded. "He lives in a secluded part of Pasay City, away from the prying eyes of the authorities. It's a bit of a trek, but it's worth it if he can help us."

After a quick cleanup and a few hours of rest, they set out to find Dr. Reyes. The streets of Pasay City were alive with activity, vendors hawking their goods and children playing in the alleys. The blend of old and new was even more apparent here, with towering high-rises casting shadows over traditional market stalls.

As they navigated through the district, Benedict couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia for his own time. Despite the technological advancements of 2061, the essence of Neo-Manila had remained the same: a city of contrasts, resilience, and hope.

They eventually reached a modest house tucked away on a quiet street. Jenny knocked on the door, and after a moment, it creaked open to reveal an elderly man with kind eyes and a weary smile.

"Jenny, my dear, it's been too long," Dr. Reyes said, embracing her warmly. His gaze shifted to Benedict, curiosity evident in his eyes. "And who is this?"

"This is Ben," Jenny said, choosing to keep Benedict's full identity a secret for now. "We need your help, Dr. Reyes. It's about something you might know a lot about—time travel."

Dr. Reyes's expression turned serious, and he ushered them inside. "Come in, both of you. We have much to discuss."

As they settled into Dr. Reyes's cluttered living room, filled with books and scientific equipment, Benedict felt a glimmer of hope. They were one step closer to uncovering the truth and finding a way back to his time.

Dr. Reyes listened intently as Jenny and Benedict recounted their journey so far, his eyes widening with each revelation. When they finished, he leaned back in his chair, deep in thought. "The technology you describe... It's far beyond anything we have in 2024. But it aligns with some of the theories we were working on before I left the government."

"Can you help us understand it?" Benedict asked, leaning forward. "We need to know how it works and who might be behind it."

Dr. Reyes nodded slowly. "I'll do what I can. But be warned, delving into this will attract attention from powerful people who don't want these secrets revealed. We must proceed with caution."

With Dr. Reyes's expertise and Jenny's determination, Benedict felt a renewed sense of purpose. The journey ahead would be fraught with danger, but they were ready to face it together. The adventure continued, and the Steel Falcon's mission was far from over
