POV HENRY
Mary looked thoughtful. I might have been blind until recently, but I could see she wasn't that different from many people I've had to deal with. Business people lurking, waiting for a misstep to take advantage.
This woman saw some advantage in me, maybe it's what she said, to leverage her career, or maybe it's something else, something I don't give a damn about knowing.
All I wanted now was Camille, I wanted to talk to her, know her reasons, observe the reactions that I had previously imagined she had… I had so many questions and so many answers that I would do anything to have a moment alone with my ex-wife.
"Okay, I know someone who can put you in the auction. It will be good because you'll see who Camille really is. Let's go, they're already going to the auditorium where it's going to happen."
I look and see a strange movement. Some people were indeed heading in the same direction, and Camille was no longer here.
My heart raced with the fear of missing the opportunity to talk to her. I even wondered if Mary was lying and Camille wasn't going to that weird auction.
That was something that divided me, because if it was what she said, I would feel very sorry for Camille for submitting to something like that. I would feel guilty. Strangely, everything involving Camille filled me with guilt.
However, something dark inside me twisted to be true because, by God, I was willing to lose everything I have to be the winner of this dispute. If she wanted to sell herself, I… I won't be proud, I would buy all of her hours, just to have the feeling of having her back.
"What about me? Are you guys taking me too, right?" Robert says behind me, which reminds me that he's still there.
"Robert, I think it's best if you go. Look, so far you haven't helped me at all, and it's not going to be now that you're going to help, is it?"
I was really disappointed in Robert, I hoped he was my friend, but after knowing that he tried to keep me away from Camille… maybe I was more alone in the world than I thought.
After some time, talking to some people and promising something in return, something that can be translated as a generous amount of money, I was able to access the place.
It was at the back of the hotel, the place was closed off, and I noticed bodyguards everywhere, indicating that it was true, only very important people were there.
Suddenly someone pulled Mary, saying she should stay on stage, she protested, and I didn't help, she ended up being taken.
Waiters passed by offering quality drinks, I could tell by the smell. I refused. My senses are still very sharp, and the taste and smell of alcohol is something I never really got used to.
I kept my eyes fixed on the stage, searching for Camille. She wasn't there, there was a presenter smiling and animating the audience, talking about the attributes and achievements of the model being presented.
The auction began, and few bids were placed, and the discouraged model walked off the stage after being purchased for a few tens of dollars.
The same situation kept happening, and I kept wondering if those men were too stingy or if they were saving their bids for something they thought was better.
Mary was auctioned, she stared at me, I think expecting me to place a bid, something I wouldn't do since she knew who I was there for.
She didn't seem very satisfied to have been auctioned for a few hundred dollars.
And that's when she appeared. My God, my throat went dry. I realized that the feeling I had when I saw her when she entered the party remained the same. She was an antidote to monotony, all her movements and expressions were stunning. Compared to the models before her, even with Mary, Camille was light years ahead in every way. Beauty, charisma, beauty… my God, I'm a lovesick fool.
While I was lost in thought, the auction had already started. When I realized it, it was already around thousands of dollars.
Only now did I realize why the bids were so low, Camille was the long-awaited one.
"250 thousand dollars, to Sheikh Malik! Surprising! Any more bids? Going once…"
"Three hundred thousand!" I stood up without thinking.
Silence fell, and everyone looked at me, but my eyes were fixed on the stage.
Camille and I stared at each other, she looked at me confused, a confusion I didn't understand. Did she think that after finding her, I would let her walk away from my life so easily again?
