I don’t know how long I stood there, staring into his eyes that looked like lasers, penetrating and sharp. Deep down, I knew his visit wasn’t because he wanted to see me, but because he wanted to know where I lived, or maybe he knew something and wanted to be sure.
Cautious, I maintained my posture, hiding my worries while I tried to decipher the intentions behind that confident smile. I knew I needed to be careful with every word that came out of my mouth, as any slip could jeopardize not only my safety, but Kaique’s as well.
“So, you’re not going to invite me in? I heard today that you are a smart and practical teacher,” he said ironically.
“Being a smart and practical teacher doesn’t mean I have to invite anyone who shows up on my doorstep to come in, especially when they’re not invited,” I replied, keeping my voice firm and controlled.
Inside, though, my mind raced with worries and uncertainties about how to handle this delicate situation.
Khalil looked at me for a moment, his amber eyes piercing mine with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. For a moment, there was a tense silence between us as I held his gaze, refusing to show any weakness.
Finally, he broke the silence with a cynical smile.
“Very well then. I will respect your decision for now. But know that I did not come here to cause trouble. I just want to have a civilized conversation with you. From smart, practical teacher to an old, intimate friend.”
His smooth voice contrasted with the seriousness of his words, and I couldn’t help but wonder what the real reason behind his visit was. However, I decided to keep my guard up, determined to protect myself from his seductive ways.
I wanted my mind to be as smart and practical as I heard today. It could be all that for other things, but when it comes to Khalil, intelligence and practicality go out the window.
I took a deep breath, trying to maintain control over my tumultuous emotions.
“Let's talk right here, Khalil. What do you really want?” I asked, crossing my arms in an attempt to create a barrier between us.
He took a step forward, closing the distance between our bodies, but still respecting the space I had established.
“I want to know what happened to those clothes that you were supposed to get and return to me,” he said directly. “I remember you making me a promise.”
The shock of his question hit me at that moment, bringing back painful memories. I was instantly transported back to that day, to the threats of his bodyguard and friend, Saïd. He really took me by surprise; I didn’t think he’d ask that first. I did everything during those years to forget that cruel day when I almost lost my son in that accident. Despite running from Saïd’s interrogations, I clearly heard him say that if Khalil knew about the baby, he would make me abort, because he didn't want children, let alone marriage. But he was announcing his marriage to that Ayla.
The memories made me slightly dizzy, and my stomach churned.
“I'd rather not discuss it,” I said with a straight face.
I knew Khalil was an impulsive and exasperated man who wouldn’t give up so easily on what he wanted to know. The proof of that was him walking into my living room and closing the door behind him, uninvited.
As he entered the room, Khalil scanned the room curiously. My living room was full of books, some plants and a few pieces of furniture. Nothing in that place matched his presence, but he didn't seem to mind.
“Tell me, why did you run out of school today?” he asked, studying me, his hands tucked into the pockets of his dress pants.
He is so intimidating, even more so with his 6’3” height, while I, at only 5’1”, feel like a girl in front of him.
“I was in a hurry. I’m a teacher, and as you know, we have a busy life,” I explained, hugging my own body.
“That’s interesting, but you wouldn’t take that long to at least say goodbye or talk to me,” he commented, with his rich accent.
“I just didn't have time. Like I said, I was in a hurry,” I deflected.
Khalil released a heavy breath he had been holding.
“I have a feeling you were trying to avoid me. I’m not stupid, darling,” he said, making my body react to his husky voice. He smiled and looked at me again. “You are the only woman who avoids me, somehow, it attracts me.”
“Because I know you better than the others, that must be it.” The phrase escaped my lips.
I shouldn't have said that. I was trying to hide my feelings of revolt towards him and our past, but I ended up ruining everything. Khalil raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued.
“So you know me well? That’s interesting. Maybe more interesting than you can imagine.”
I took a deep breath, trying to maintain my composure.
“Khalil, please, let’s stop with these games. If you have something to say, say it now, and get out of my house.”
He took another step closer, narrowing the distance between us even further. As I backed away, he approached, until I felt the wall behind me.
For a moment, his eyes roamed my body boldly. Then, they went up to my face, his gaze lingering on mine before dropping to my lips. I looked like a frightened animal in front of that man. He clenched his jaw, and I noticed a smile almost forming on his lips, perhaps remembering something indecent.
I was aware of that look on me and I knew he was thinking dirty things. My body was in shock from feeling his body so close and his gaze full of desire, even as he tried to hide it.
“Stop it, Khalil.”
“Stop what?” he murmured cynically, his lips curving into a teasing smile.
I swallowed hard, trying to remain calm as my heart raced.
“You’re too close, I don't like this proximity like that. And it's not polite of you to look at me like that.”
Khalil gave a typical male laugh.
“Do my look and proximity affect you?” he whispered hoarsely. “Looking is normal, it’s part of being human.”
“I don't like it,” I snapped.
“You don’t like it now, but you used to love it, even rolled your eyes when you were sitting on my lap.”
“That was before,” I scolded.
He knew how to provoke me and get under my skin.
