I woke up early as I do every day and prepared a hearty breakfast, after all, I'm eating for two, as usual. In these weeks that I've been away from work, I've been taking care of myself, but I'm seriously considering leaving completely, because I feel like I can't perform my duties like I used to. Even so, I know that I won't be accepted in my current condition.
While I was devouring all the fruit and food I could find, my cell phone rang on the counter, announcing a call from Hanna.
"Hello?"
"Valeria, I need you. I know you're pregnant, but something came up. Sheik Khalil asked for a team to clean his mansion, and I was one of those chosen to go, but I can't. I'll explain later, so I want to send you in my place. You won't have a problem. I already spoke to the girls, and they promised me they wouldn't say anything to the boss. And I remembered that you need some extra money, so don't refuse."
"I'll go, don't worry."
"All right, then get ready. The girls will pick you up. See you later, kisses."
She hung up the phone.
I stood there, holding the phone, trying to process everything. I knew that going back to work, even temporarily, would be a challenge, but Hanna needed me. Besides, the idea of entering Sheik Khalil's mansion brought a mixture of curiosity and fear.
I took a deep breath, determined. I went upstairs to get ready, choosing comfortable clothes that wouldn't tighten my belly when I was bending down to clean the furniture.
A short time later, I heard the horn outside. The girls arrived on time, and I joined them, trying to hide my apprehension. On the way to the mansion, we exchanged a few words, but my mind was racing, imagining what it would be like to meet the Sheik, responsible for all the hotels; he must be a very rich man.
We got into the car and headed for the hotel's private heliport, with the disguise well adjusted, ensuring that no one would recognize me. The jet was ready to take us to Sheik Khalil's mansion. As soon as we boarded, I settled into one of the seats near the window, watching the movement around me as I tried to calm my nerves.
Finally, we landed and were led to the imposing entrance of the mansion. Luxury was evident in every detail, from the gates to the lavish decoration. We entered, being guided by one of the staff to the place where we should start cleaning. The other girls started working, but I was still a little paralyzed, trying to get used to the grandeur of the place.
Taking a deep breath, I gathered my thoughts and started working. Every move was calculated, trying to stay focused and invisible. The mansion was huge and there was a lot to do.
I climbed the stairs, walking to a more sophisticated space that looked like an office. There, the work would be easier, just wiping down the surfaces. I started cleaning, trying to concentrate on the task, until my eyes met those of that man, the same one from that fateful night.
He was behind an oak desk, dressed in an impeccable white suit. His hair was combed back, with a rebellious lock falling over his forehead. He was deeply engrossed, signing some documents on the table.
My heart skipped a beat. I tried to make as little noise as possible, but my movements were uncoordinated by the tension. I was torn between the urge to flee and the need to continue my work without attracting attention.
With each step, the distance between us seemed to diminish, and I knew it was only a matter of time before he noticed me. My hands were shaking slightly as I lightly ran the cloth over the furniture, trying to avoid looking directly at him, but feeling his gaze occasionally rising from the paperwork.
Finally, I couldn't help but meet his gaze. He looked up, and his amber eyes fixed on me, surprised, but full of recognition. The air in the office seemed to thicken, and for a moment, everything around us disappeared.
"Shit, not again," I muttered, swallowing hard, my treacherous body reacting so astutely to seeing him. "Sorry sir, I was just cleaning, but I'm done." I turned to leave; I couldn't believe he was Sheik Khalil.
My conscience was there, nagging me, telling me that I ended up in bed with a sheik. Owner of everything, even the place where I was working, and to make matters worse, I'm pregnant with his child. The tension in the air was palpable, and I felt my breathing quicken.
He rose from his chair slowly, and I'm sure his eyes are fixed on me.
"Turn around, please," his voice sounded more normal than that day.
I turned around, there was surprise on his face being replaced by something more intense, maybe curiosity or even recognition. My heart was beating so fast I could hear it in my ears.
"You..." he began, but his voice came out low, almost a whisper.
I didn't know what to do. Part of me wanted to run out of that office, disappear and never come back. Another part, the more rational one, knew I had to face this situation. After all, what would happen when he found out I was pregnant?
"I'm sorry, sir," I murmured, lowering my gaze, trying to hide the panic in my voice. "I'm just here to clean, and I didn't mean to interrupt your concentration."
He walked around the desk, slowly approaching me. Each step he took seemed to echo in the silence of the office. When he stopped in front of me, I felt my whole body tense, every muscle on alert.
"What's your name?" he asked, his voice now firm and authoritative.
I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice. "Valeria, sir."
"Valeria..." he repeated, running his fingers over his red lips as if testing the name. "Why did you run away that night, Valeria?" My name sounded perfectly sexy in his mouth.
I wanted to answer, I wanted to explain everything, but the words wouldn't come out. I was terrified and, at the same time, fascinated by his presence. My gaze met his again, and there, in that moment, I knew there was no more hiding.
"I..." I began, but my voice failed. I took a deep breath and tried again. "I was scared. Of course I was, because I work at the hotel, and what I did was unprofessional, and you mistook me for someone else."
He frowned.
"Of course, I understand... Now I understand perfectly why you ran away like that." He smiled.
And wow, what a fucking smile.
