Hannah stared out the window of her new room, her emotions a tangled mess of excitement and uncertainty. Her mother, Julia, had recently married David, a kind and successful businessman who seemed to genuinely care for them. Moving into David's spacious home was a significant change from the small apartment she and her mother had shared for years. Everything here was different—the house, the neighborhood, and most of all, the people.

Hannah hadn't met Ethan, David's son, before the wedding. He had been away at college and only returned home a few days ago. She had heard about him, of course—how he was confident, charming, and had an aura of mystery that intrigued everyone. As she unpacked her belongings, she couldn't shake the feeling of nervous anticipation about finally meeting him.

Dinner that evening was a formal affair, unlike the casual meals Hannah was used to. The dining room was filled with the aroma of roasted chicken and freshly baked bread. Julia and David were laughing and sharing stories, their happiness evident. Hannah tried to join in, but her thoughts kept drifting to Ethan, who had yet to make an appearance.

Just as Hannah was starting to wonder if he would show up, Ethan walked in. He was tall, with tousled dark hair and eyes that seemed to hold a thousand secrets. He greeted everyone with a warm smile, but when his gaze landed on Hannah, it lingered just a bit longer. She felt a strange flutter in her chest.

“Hannah, this is Ethan,” David said, introducing them. “Ethan, this is Hannah. She’ll be living with us from now on.”

Ethan nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. “Nice to meet you, Hannah.”

“Nice to meet you too,” she replied, trying to sound casual.

Throughout dinner, Hannah found herself sneaking glances at Ethan. There was something about him that drew her in, something beyond his good looks. He spoke with confidence and ease, making everyone laugh with his stories. Yet, there was a subtle intensity in his eyes whenever he looked at her, a connection she couldn't explain.

After dinner, Hannah excused herself and went to the kitchen for a glass of water. She was lost in thought when she heard footsteps behind her. Turning around, she saw Ethan standing there, his expression unreadable.

“Can’t sleep?” he asked, his voice soft.

Hannah shook her head. “Too much on my mind, I guess.”

Ethan stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “It’s a big change, moving in here. I get it.”

“Yeah, it is,” she admitted. “But everyone’s been really nice.”

Ethan smiled, a hint of mischief in his eyes. “Just wait until you get to know me.”

Hannah's heart raced at his words. “I look forward to it.”

There was a charged silence between them, the air thick with unspoken words. Before Hannah could say anything else, Ethan reached out and gently tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. The simple touch sent a shiver down her spine.

“Goodnight, Hannah,” he whispered, his breath warm against her skin.

“Goodnight, Ethan,” she replied, her voice barely audible.

As Ethan walked away, Hannah knew her life had just become infinitely more complicated. The attraction she felt for him was undeniable, but the very nature of their relationship made it a forbidden desire. How could she navigate these new beginnings without crossing the lines society had drawn for them?
