A Call From The Dead

A Call From The Dead

A CALL FROM THE DEAD

Sometime last year, I have this person who calls me unceasingly with an unknown number.

For all of the six hundred and eighty-six (686) times this caller had called me, she never spoke a 'thing'.

So, I ceased picking the calls and every of the time she called, I'd have it cut at once.

This weird phenomenon went on until early this year when I was in class with about thirty other students awaiting our lecturer to come teach us.

I was seated, when a young female student approached me with her phone, saying someone wants to speak with me.

In surprise, I stared at her and asked "Who's this person?"

"I think she said her name is Sandra Terfa and she mentioned your name as the person she wants to speak with"

"Sandra Terfa? That's impossible." I stood up timorously.

The only Sandra Terfa I used to know was long dead while I was in secondary school. She was my seat mate — She passed on after a short illness.

I was starteld to the nerves when another class of students walked up to me, extending their smart phones.

Now, I have about eighteen students in front of me, begging and forcing me with a teary face to receive the call from their phones...

"But who is this caller," I bawled.

"Sandra Terfa" they all chorused.

I was perplexed. My hands were lightly shaking now.

Before I could say anything, my lecturer walked in and the whole class dissolved to their seats.

"Where's Oladimeji?" She asked while scanning every seat in search of me.

"I'm here, ma," I raised up my right hand to signify.

"One Sandra wants to speak to you over the phone, come take."

I was bewildered and I couldn't resist this one from my lecturer. I walked sluggishly and fearfully to recieve the call.

"Hel... Hello..." I stuttered.

"Hi, Ola... This is Sandra. Why have you been avoiding me?" came the voice, steady and mild, and undaunted, accompanied by an eerie breeze.

It was the same voice of the Sandra Terfa I used to know.

"I... miss you and I never was chanced to say goodbye to you before I left to my new word, where I now sit lonely with no you by my side. And I was only going to say goodbye. And I look forward to seeing you — maybe, just maybe in the nearest time."

I was wordless and had my hands trembling as I returned the phone to my lecturer.

"Who was the caller," my lecturer and the whole class chorused at the same time.

I stared blankly at them and replied, "it is A CALL FROM THE DEAD."

I didn't know how, but by the time I would raised my head to say something in accession, the classroom was empty.
