Emma woke to the soft light of dawn filtering through her curtains, her body entwined with Alex's. She smiled, feeling a profound sense of contentment and the warmth of his skin against hers. Gently slipping out of bed to make coffee, she couldn't help but replay the events of the previous night in her mind. Every touch, every kiss had felt perfect, like they were made for each other. She was falling for Alex, hard and fast.
As she moved through her apartment, she hummed a tune, her heart light with happiness. When she returned to the bedroom with two steaming cups of coffee, she found Alex awake, propped up on one elbow, watching her with a lazy smile. "Good morning," he murmured, his voice still husky with sleep.
"Good morning," she replied, handing him a cup and sitting beside him. They sipped their coffee in comfortable silence, the intimacy of the moment deepening their connection.
After breakfast, Alex reluctantly pulled on his clothes. "I hate to leave, but I have a few meetings this morning," he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I'll call you later?"
"Definitely," Emma replied, walking him to the door. She watched him leave, her heart feeling light and full.
The day passed in a blur of work, her mind constantly drifting back to Alex. She was in the middle of finalizing details for another event when her phone rang. It was her assistant, Jen.
"Hey, Emma, you have a visitor," Jen said. "A Jason Carter."
Emma's heart sank. Jason was her ex-boyfriend, and their breakup had been anything but amicable. "Send him in," she said, her voice tight.
Jason walked into her office, his expression smug. "Hello, Emma."
"What do you want, Jason?" she asked, crossing her arms.
"I just wanted to see how you were doing," he said, leaning against her desk. "I’ve missed you."
Emma rolled her eyes. "We broke up for a reason, Jason. What do you really want?"
Jason’s eyes darkened. "I’ve been hearing things, Emma. About your new boyfriend, Alex Turner. He’s not who you think he is."
Emma felt a chill run down her spine. "What are you talking about?"
Jason leaned in closer, a predatory look in his eyes. "He’s got a shady past. Business deals that nearly ruined him. You should be careful."
Emma felt her stomach drop. "Why should I believe you?"
"Look into it yourself," Jason said, straightening up. "I’m just looking out for you."
After he left, Emma sat at her desk, her mind racing. She didn’t want to believe Jason, but the seed of doubt had been planted. She decided to do some research, hoping to prove him wrong.
That evening, Alex called, his voice warm and inviting. “Hey, beautiful. Want to have dinner tonight?”
Emma hesitated. “Actually, Alex, can we talk? There’s something I need to ask you.”
“Of course,” he replied, concern evident in his voice. “I’ll be right over.”
When he arrived, Emma could see the worry in his eyes. They sat on the couch, and she took a deep breath. “Alex, do you have any secrets? Anything from your past you haven’t told me?”
Alex’s expression hardened slightly, his jaw tightening. “Why do you ask?”
“I ran into my ex today. He said some things about you, about your business dealings,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I need to know if it’s true.”
Alex sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Emma, I was hoping to tell you about this myself. Yes, I’ve had some trouble in the past. I made some bad decisions, trusted the wrong people. It nearly cost me everything.”
Emma felt a pang of sympathy, but also a flicker of doubt. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I didn’t want you to see me differently,” Alex said, his voice strained. “I’m not that person anymore, Emma. I’ve worked hard to turn my life around.”
She searched his eyes, wanting to believe him. “Alex, I care about you. But I need to know I can trust you.”
“You can,” he said, taking her hands in his. “I promise you, Emma. I’ll never lie to you. Please, give me a chance to prove it.”
Emma nodded, her heart aching. “Okay. I believe you. But no more secrets, Alex. We need to be honest with each other.”
“Agreed,” he said, pulling her into his arms. “Thank you, Emma. I won’t let you down.”
As they held each other, Emma felt a sense of relief. She wanted to trust Alex, to believe in their future. But she knew that trust had to be earned, and it would take time.
