After we got on the plane, I couldn't stop from being completely in awe. The mere ambiance exuded luxury. As I stepped on the plane, the first thing that commanded my attention was the pristine beige leather that hugged the twenty seats aboard. Warm stop lights snaked along the ceiling and the edges of the floors.
It wasn't long before we were on the nineteen-hour flight to Manchester. And the exhaustion, physical strain and stress I've been through for the past couple of days has finally set in.
This is going to be a new experience.
When we arrived, it was late in the afternoon with a light drizzle that promised to get heavier. It was a bit chilly outside, but I thought more or less it had something to do with the rain, but I didn't spend too much time outside, because as soon as I was off the plane, I was ushered into a black SUV generously decorated with the school emblem.
We drove through the city picking up some food on the way. The place had an old feel to it. Most of the building had an old brick finish, but it was cool. After our meal, we made our way to the outskirts of the city and turned north into less inhabited parts.
Adrien told me a little story about the school. He told me that the school was founded a hundred and sixty-five years ago by Saint Stanton, a Catholic priest back in the day. It wasn't exactly a school back then. It was more a training ground of, but after the church heard the theories on which he started the school, they shut it down thinking he was possessed or plain mad. He told them he saw things appearing out of thin air, things that were neither beast nor human. When the church condemned him, he spent countless hours at the school's location watching and waiting to see something else appear. In the meantime, people joined him, mostly to make fun of him, but he started teaching them, restarting the school without the church.
The rain started to pour by the time we arrived at the school gates. It was too dark to see much, but from what was visible, the school was dripping with money. The chrome fence was lined on both sides with two feet of rose bush. The school had a damned courtyard four times the size of my yard and the thing was paved. We didn't stop for sightseeing long because the gates swung open, and we head inside to the faculty parking lot under the main building.
Adrien got my key card, and we went to the dorms. He told me my bags would be up soon, but he had to run. He told me my schedule and books were in my room and my orientation started at nine tomorrow.
He left me at my door with a wave and a promise to see me later.
Anyway, I swiped my keycard and I could hear the gears in the lock moving before it beeped and the little red light turned green. I pushed the door open with little force, but the hinges protested being used, creaking softly.
When I stepped in, the carpeted floor triggered my home mode and I immediately took off my shoes I have been wearing for over twenty-four hours. And trust me when I say these things needed to be aired.
The carpet was a calming dark gray with small sprinkles of white all over, and it was soft under my toes. The carpet disappeared under a floating king-sized bed, swimming in a pool of bright purple lights and drowned in fluffy sheets of various shades of gray.
On either side of the bed sat two night tables made of dark wood with lambs sat on top of them. There was a glass desk by the left wall with about three textbooks, a laptop, a phone and a slab of dark glass on it. The bathroom door was on the left wall too, and the walk-in closet I forgot to mention. It wasn't as large as the one I have at home, but I'll have to make do. This wasn't my house after all. I actually thought the closet was apart of someone else's room when I came in until I found the door inside the bathroom. Opposite the bed was a small entertainment center with a wall-mounted forty-inch TV.
I was about to look in the bathroom when someone knocked on my door pretty aggressively. The hell.
I walked towards the door and swung it open just as a fist came colliding with my nose bridge. Fuck.
" The hell?" I shrieked, my hands, coming in an automatic response.
"Oh shit. I am so sorry, but we've got to go now," I didn't really process what he said before anger started seeping into my veins. The hell did you need so much force to knock on a door? I couldn't act on that anger before he grabbed my left arm and dragged me off down the hall. I then realized that the hall was packed with people. Wait, what's going on?
The only answer I got to my question was an extremely bright light rushing towards me and throwing me across the hall onto a glass shelf. I felt the shards pierce through my skin, but I felt the most pain in my back where a metal brace ran through, pressing against my lung and my heart. I tried to push myself off the invasive piece of metal, but the blood under my hands made the floor slippery, and I slid back, pushing the metal further into my body.
I really needed to move to avoid something else happening, but before I could try again, I heard a loud crumbling and I looked up just in time to see the ceiling and ventilation system caving in. And that's when everything started to go slow. Everything I heard was reduced to a ringing in my ears. Everything I saw became a distant blur. Even the pain I felt was starting to numb.
So this is what it felt like to see your death coming.
