“Time changes people don’t, I know you don’t remember me but you will know my name soon” the stranger replied.
Then I have no choice," she declares, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "I have to find out the truth about Enzo, no matter what it takes." And with that, they set off on their journey, determined to uncover the dark secrets lurking beneath the surface before it's too late.
As Enzo's chilling confession played back on the recording device, Elio's heart pounded with a mixture of triumph and dread. She had the evidence she needed to bring Enzo to justice, but the reality of what he had become was almost too much to bear. Determined to ensure his reign of terror ended, she knew she had to act quickly.
With the recording safely tucked away, Elio and Bruno made their way to the nearest police station. Along the way, they contacted the authorities, informing them of Enzo's confession and the evidence they had gathered.
The police, initially sceptical, were finally convinced by the gravity of the situation and agreed to take immediate action.
As Elio and Bruno approached the station, a sleek black car pulled up beside them. A tall man with dark hair and piercing blue eyes stepped out. He wore a sharp suit and had an air of authority about him. Elio’s instincts told her to be cautious.
“Elio Romano?” the man asked, his voice smooth yet commanding.
“Yes, that’s me,” Elio replied, her hand instinctively moving to where she had hidden the recording device.
“I’m Agent Moretti with the Interpol. We’ve been tracking Enzo for years, but he’s always managed to stay one step ahead. We’ve received your message and we’re here to help.”
Elio felt a mixture of relief and wariness. She had never expected Interpol to be involved. She handed over the recording device to Agent Moretti, who nodded approvingly as he listened to the confession.
“This is exactly what we needed,” Moretti said, his tone serious. “We need to move quickly before Enzo has a chance to disappear again.” Just as they were about to head inside, Elio noticed a familiar figure lurking in the shadows across the street.
It was the same mysterious stranger who had approached her at Maria’s café. He seemed to be watching them intently.
“He is following me since yesterday?” Elio told moretti, pointing towards the stranger.
Moretti followed her gaze, his expression darkening. “Stay here,” he ordered, as he and a couple of officers approached the man.
Elio’s curiosity got the better of her, and she cautiously followed. The stranger didn’t try to run. Instead, he raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.
“You’ve been following us,” Moretti said, his voice cold. “Who are you?”
The stranger smirked. “I’m just someone who wants to see justice done. Enzo’s crimes go deeper than you know. There are forces at play here that you can’t even begin to comprehend.”
“Enough with the cryptic nonsense,” Moretti snapped. “Who are you, and what do you know about Enzo?”
he stranger sighed. “My name is Federico. I used to work with Enzo. but I left when I realized just how far he was willing to go. He’s not just a criminal; he’s part of a larger conspiracy. There are powerful people backing him, people who will stop at nothing to protect their interests.”
Elio’s mind raced. Could this be the truth behind Enzo’s inexplicable influence and power?
“Why should we believe you?” Moretti asked, his scepticism evident.
Federico’s gaze met Elio’s. “Because I can lead you to him. I know his next move. But you’ll need to trust me.”
Elio felt a strange sense of déjà vu. Federico’s eyes were filled with a mix of determination and desperation. She looked at Moretti, who seemed to be weighing his options.
“Alright,” Moretti finally said. “But if you’re lying, you’ll wish you had never approached us.”
With Federico leading the way, they embarked on a tense journey through the winding streets of San Marino. As they drove, Federico revealed more about Enzo’s connections to a shadowy network of criminals and corrupt officials.
He spoke of hidden meetings, secret codes, and a plot that threatened not just the Romano family, but the entire region.
Finally, they arrived at an abandoned villa on the outskirts of town. Federico insisted that this was where Enzo was hiding. The villa was dark and foreboding, with an eerie silence that sent shivers down Elio’s spine.
Moretti signalled his team to move in. They breached the villa, guns drawn, and searched every room. But Enzo was nowhere to be found. Instead, they discovered a hidden basement filled with evidence of Enzo’s criminal activities – stacks of money, fake passports, and documents detailing his plans.
As they sifted through the evidence, Elio felt a sense of unease. Something didn’t add up. Federico had been right about the villa, but why wasn’t Enzo here?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden noise from the entrance.
Enzo, flanked by a group of armed men, stepped into the villa, his expression a mixture of amusement and anger.
“Well, well, what do we have here?” Enzo taunted, his voice dripping with malice. “Did you really think you could catch me that easily?”
A tense standoff ensued. Elio’s heart pounded as she realized the gravity of the situation. They were outnumbered and outgunned, but she refused to back down.
“Give it up, Enzo,” Elio said, her voice steady. “We have enough evidence to put you away for good.”
Enzo laughed. “You always were the naïve one, Elio. This is bigger than you can imagine. You can’t stop me.”
Before anyone could react, Federico lunged at Enzo, catching him off guard. A chaotic struggle ensued, and in the confusion, Elio managed to grab a weapon from one of Enzo’s men.
With a burst of adrenaline, she aimed at Enzo. “It’s over, Enzo,” she shouted. “Surrender now, or I swear I’ll end this myself.”
Enzo’s men hesitated, glancing at their leader. Enzo, sensing his precarious position, slowly raised his hands. “Alright, alright,” he said, his tone mocking. “But before killing me, see what’s hanging up there, Elio.”
