He pulled me toward the dining room, leaving the boys outside. As we approached, she stopped and turned to look at me.
"Thank you for what you did for me yesterday, Azula."
"You don't have to thank me, my Luna. My loyalty is always with you."
She gave a sad smile. "Yesterday was a devastating day for me, but at least I discovered something that made me happy."
Her eyes welled up as she looked at me and smiled. "You love me."
She said it as a statement, as if affirming that I loved her and couldn't deny it.
"I never said I didn't. You are my Luna."
"You distanced yourself, and I thought you didn't love me anymore. I saw how many times you avoided me, how every time I arrived somewhere you looked for any excuse to leave. I even thought you hated me, but I didn't know why..."
She continued speaking with tears in her eyes, and I felt guilty. I had distanced myself so they could be happy, but I continued to hurt her while hurting myself. I didn't know what the Moon Goddess's plan was in pairing me with my best friend's boyfriend, but I knew it had hurt us all, and I had been a part of it. I listened to her ramble on and on about the past, and I needed to stop it. "My Luna, I really don't want to talk about this. You just need to know that I have never stopped loving you and that I only wanted you to be happy."
She smiled and hugged me. As she pulled away, she took my arm and led me to the dining room. The food was already served, and she went to call the boys. I sat in the seat next to my partner as he arrived and took his place. He gently took my hand and kissed it. We ate in comfortable silence. It was the first time in six years that I didn't feel uncomfortable in the same room as Jace and Elaine, and maybe it was because my partner, my true partner, was by my side.
"Alpha Jace, I would like to talk about yesterday's attack. Have you investigated anything?"
Jace looked up at him, his eyes like two black holes. He looked like he hadn't slept all night, and I felt guilty. Surely everyone had been working all night, and I had slept peacefully with my partner.
"Of course, when we're done, let's go to my office and talk."
After finishing breakfast, we went to his office, where Aron and Elliot were already waiting.
"My princess!" Aron quickly enveloped me in his arms. "Are you okay? I was worried. Yesterday you suddenly disappeared, and I didn't know if you were okay. God, I'm a horrible brother! I ran to check on Lisa and didn't go look for you. I'm so sorry!"
"No, by God, Aron, relax. It's okay. You have to take care of your partner. Alec took care of me. I'm fine, everything is fine." He pulled away from our hug and looked me in the eye.
"Are you sure?"
"Of course, calm down. How are Lisa, Mom, and Dad?"
"They are well. They stayed at home. They are delighted with Lisa; they have already told her all the embarrassing stories of our lives."
My eyes widened in surprise. "Don't tell me that, all of them?"
He nodded with the same look of horror and embarrassment that I'm sure I had.
I heard Alec's chuckle as he pulled me closer to his side.
"I'd also like to know what all these stories are that make your cheeks flush like that. We'll be going to your parents' house soon."
I looked into his eyes with terror and shame just thinking about all the foolish things my parents, especially my mother, would tell my partner.
"My mother has already told the girls about the night patrol."
We all looked at Elliot, his face flushed. It was funny to see the always serious Elliot blushing. Aron burst out laughing, and Elliot laughed in embarrassment.
"Missi and Lissi haven't stopped talking about it since they were told."
"Missi and Lissi, are those your partners' names?"
Elliot looked at me in surprise. It was the first time I had spoken to him about something other than pack business in years.
"Yes, that's what they are called, Missi and Lissi. They are the sisters of the Alpha King, your partner. They are anxious to meet you. I have told them about you; well, my mother has already taken it upon herself to tell them almost everything about all of us." Elliot spoke quickly and nervously, as if the moment would evaporate if he were to stop talking.
"It's true; they are my sisters-in-law, and I haven't even greeted them. God, how rude of me."
Elliot laughed excitedly. "Don't worry, little one, they understand. They know that you are the Beta of this pack and that you are very busy. You will meet them soon."
I smiled at him, and he smiled back. "Congratulations, Elliot, on finding your partners."
"Likewise... Azula."
Hearing my name on his lips was like a breath of life to my heart. It had been so many years since I had heard it, and seeing him smile at me felt like it had been only yesterday that we were meeting in my backyard to chat, that he was carrying me on his shoulders when my lazy brother got tired, like it had been yesterday when we were friends.
Jace cleared his throat and spoke. I hadn't realized that the room had fallen silent after our little chat.
"Well, let's talk about the attack. What did you find out, Aron?" We all turned to him, returning to what was really important: everyone's safety.
"The rogues who attacked us have a pack nearby. They had never crossed the borders before, but a few days ago we saw some cars arrive there. We didn't pay much attention because we didn't think they were suspicious. We have lived in peace for a long time, so we were not suspicious. Those cars left the next day, and suspiciously, days later, they attacked the pack."
"From the way they attacked, it was obvious they were coming for you."
"Maybe they thought that if they killed you, they could take over the pack."
"Yes, that wolf…" Aron paused as he spoke of that wolf, Elaine's partner. "He was going for you. He didn't even notice the children. They were going for you."
"And from the way everyone scattered when he ran, we have to assume he's the leader of the rogues."
"I've heard about that." Alec spoke, and everyone turned to look at him. "A pack of rogues that operates like a normal pack, they call themselves the ELYT. Their leader was an Alpha who lost his pack in a fire, a laboratory they had exploded, setting more than half the pack ablaze. The fire spread quickly. All of this happened while he was away. They said he was looking for something, but no one knows what. The pain made him wild. He ran away and deserted his title, becoming a rogue. A rogue female found him injured in the woods and took care of him. Since then, he has lived as a rogue and managed to become their leader. He was the former Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, Ronald Akistan."
