That day I spent the whole afternoon talking to my partner, it was so easy to talk to him, I wondered if it would be that easy to tell him everything I was hiding from the world, how would he react knowing that my alpha was my partner and that he rejected me, that I had been a coward and preferred to pretend that nothing happened and erase the past I lived with my best friends before telling the truth, I had prioritized the happiness of Elaine and Jace over mine and I did not know if that made me a good friend or a fool.
We were talking when I felt Ryan in my head, he was one of the night patrol chiefs and he already knew what he was looking for me for.
"Beta, we're almost ready, just waiting for you."
"Give me a few minutes, I'll be right there."
I looked at my partner looking at me so sweetly and smiled. "I have to go now."
"Why, where are you going at this hour, my queen?"
"I'm in charge of the night patrol, they're waiting for me."
"Oh, right." He laughed so casually and carefree, I'm sure this was a facet of the alpha king that not many people knew, I had heard that he was a ruthless man, that he alone had eradicated a pack of rogues that was stealing from his pack, his wolf was one of the strongest, measuring a height that no wolf reached and that made other wolves tremble with his eyes as red as blood.
"Ok, I'll let you go on with your duties, but you have to promise me that we'll have breakfast together." He took my hands and kissed them, sparks flying all over my body.
"Sure, I'll come tomorrow and we'll have breakfast together."
He smiled and gave me a soft kiss on the lips. "I can't wait to take you with me and crown you as my queen."
That brought me back to reality, he was the alpha king and he had his own pack, I would have to go with him and leave behind my parents, my brother, my pack children, that made me sad.
"Why are you sad, my moon, don't you like the idea?"
His eyes looked at me disappointed, I squeezed his hands and spoke. "No, no, no, don't think that, of course I want to be your queen, it's just that I'm going to miss my loved ones, the people who will stay here."
His face contorted. "I understand you, my moon, I will too, my sisters have gotten their mates and they are men with positions they cannot leave, they will stay here with them." His face looked sad and I understood, I also had to leave my brother behind, my best friend, my twin. I hugged him and leaned on his chest.
"But it makes me so happy to know that I will not go alone, you will go with me, my moon." His lips clung to mine in a long kiss that left me breathless, I did not know that a kiss could feel this way.
"Beta, they miss you so much."
I felt Ryan in my head again, I pulled away from Alec. "I'm sorry I have to go now, see you tomorrow." I gave him a little kiss and ran out of there before I regretted it and stayed in his arms all night.
"I'm on my way, Ryan, where are they?"
"At point 32, the Alpha is here."
My footsteps stopped, what was Jace doing there?
"Did he tell you why he's here?"
"He hasn't said anything, he just arrived and stayed here."
"Okay, I'm coming."
I ran as fast as I could and reached point 32, everyone was there waiting for me to arrive, as soon as Jace saw me he came towards me.
"We need to talk, Azula."
"Alpha, give me a moment and I'll order the patrols."
He grimaced in annoyance but stepped aside.
"Squad one go from point 0 to 20, 2 from point 20 to 40, and 3 stay at the border, I will go to the remaining points with the Alpha."
"As you command, Beta." Everyone left where I asked and I motioned for Jace to follow me, we walked the two of us in silence, we walked for a long time until he stopped.
"Azula, we need to talk."
"What do you want to talk about, alpha?"
"That man can't be your partner."
"Why couldn't he be?"
"Because I am your partner."
"What are you talking about, Alpha, your partner is Elaine Wood, your moon."
"You and I know that's not true."
"No, you and I and the whole pack know that your partner is Elaine, not me, so don't say that again."
"Why, don't you want your partner, the alpha king, to know?"
"For God's sake, don't be stupid, Jace, I've kept this secret for years, stepping aside so that you and Elaine can be happy because I love you, you can't come and ruin everything now, I won't let you hurt Elaine with your stupidity."
After my outburst of madness, Jace was silent, just staring at me, I sighed and turned away.
"I have to continue with the alpha patrol, go home with your moon, she must be worried about you."
At that moment I felt Aron in my head.
"Little one, have you seen Jace, Elaine is waiting for him to put the children to sleep?"
"Yes, he came to check on the patrols, he's leaving."
"He went to check on the patrols, that's not normal."
"Yeah, I thought the same thing, but he's leaving now."
"See you at the house, little one."
The mind link cut off and I turned to look at Jace, his eyes were glassy and his hands were clenched at his sides, his eyes returned to their color and he looked at me.
"I have to go, but this conversation is not over, Azula."
He turned and left, finally alone.
I finished my patrol shift and went back to the house, everything was dark and everyone was already asleep, I went up to my room and opened the door, I could see the lump in Aron's bed and I approached wanting to sleep with him like when we were kids, I was going to miss him so much, I threw myself on his bed and there was a scream, I got scared and screamed too, I heard Aron scream and I got out of bed running and turned on the light, Aron was in his bed with Lisa, both with frightened looks, Aron had paint all over his neck and face, they both looked at me, I looked at them and we burst out laughing.
"Azula, God, you scared me, why were you two screaming?"
Lisa couldn't stop laughing and she couldn't even speak.
"I came and wanted to sleep with you so I threw myself on your bed thinking it was you and fell on top of Lisa, she screamed, I screamed and you woke up screaming."
"Oh my god, how embarrassing, what a shame, Azula, I thought you were staying with my brother."
"What? No." I laughed nervously. "I was on patrol duty, I finished and came to sleep."
"Oh, how embarrassing." Lisa was red, covering herself with the sheet up to her neck, I laughed and turned off the light.
"Don't worry, I didn't see anything, go back to sleep, I'll sleep in the guest room."
I left the room and heard Aron laugh, that had been embarrassing even for me.
