Three days had already passed since that night. I was doing housework while Tania went shopping for groceries.

While cleaning my room, I dropped a porcelain box where I kept my mother's ring.

I knelt down to reach for the box when I felt one of the floorboards was loose. It seemed strange to me since I hadn't noticed it before.

I rolled my bed to get a good look at the gap. I removed the loose floorboard and saw a safe. Just then, Tania arrived and entered my room.

"Alice, I'm back."

"Tania, come here, look."

Tania came closer and was just as surprised as I was.

"Alice, and that safe?" Tania asked, surprised.

"It was hidden under one of the floorboards."

"Couldn't it be your mother's, Alice? You and she lived here for a few months, right?"

"Yes, but I never noticed if Mom had hidden a safe."

"Well, try to open it."

"How am I supposed to open it if I don't know the combination?"

"Well, try. Put in something your mother would use."

After Tania told me to try to open it, I did. I had tried several dates, Mom and Dad's anniversary, Mom's birthday, and Dad's birthday, but nothing.

I decided to try again with my date of birth, and indeed, my date of birth was the combination. I was so happy to have managed to open it.

And I was surprised by everything inside. There was jewelry, cash, and several papers. I started to go through the papers and found the apartment papers.

It turns out that this apartment belonged to my mother long before I was born, so that's why Dad didn't know about this apartment. She had bought it before she met Dad.

While I was searching, I saw several documents that looked very important. What caught my attention was a letter that my mother seemed to have written since it was her handwriting.

I didn't want to open the letter. I don't know what it might contain. I just noticed the address my mother wanted to send it to.

So, without wasting any more time, I told Tania that we would go to that address, and so we did. That address was a little far from where we were.

After half an hour, we arrived at the address. My jaw dropped. This mansion was undoubtedly three times bigger than my house in the United States.

Why would my mother want to send a letter to this house?

I approached the guard to see if he would let me in.

"Hello, sir."

"Hello, what do you need?" said the man, turning to me.

When he turned to look at me, he was totally surprised, as if he had seen a ghost.

"Yo... you..." the man stammered.

"Sir, I wanted to know if you would let me in. I have a letter from Carla Jons."

The man couldn't speak; he just nodded and opened the gate. I went back to the car and drove to the entrance. When I got out of the car, I went to the front door and rang the doorbell.

A woman opened it. I think she was a maid because she was wearing a uniform. She was a young girl.

"Yes, ma'am, how can I help you?" the girl said to me.

"Um, I want to know if Mr. Tomas Jons is in."

That was the name on the letter. I don't know who this man is, but he has the same last name as my mother. Could they be relatives? I don't think Mom ever mentioned having family.

"Yes, ma'am, he's in the dining room right now. Would you like me to send him a message?"

"Um, can you tell him I want to speak with him?"

The girl nodded and went to talk to Mr. Tomas. A few minutes later, the girl came out.

"Alright, ma'am, you can come in."

Tania and I followed the girl into the house, and we didn't stop until we were directly at the dining room.

"Excuse me, miss, but why are we going to the dining room? I don't think it would be appropriate to interrupt their meal."

The girl looked at me and said:

"Ma'am, the thing is, they think you are here looking for Mr. Tomas because you want something from him, if you know what I mean."

"Yes, I understand. I think they misunderstood."

"Well, ma'am, you can go and clear it up."

I nodded, and we followed the girl. I was nervous because I didn't know how these people would react to seeing me since they misunderstood everything.

The girl opened the dining room door.
