A Shift In the wind

The days that followed were a whirlwind of anticipation for Ivy. She found herself constantly searching for Matthew, her eyes scanning the campus for a glimpse of his familiar curly hair. She even started taking a slightly longer route to the library, just in case he might be sitting on that bench again.

One evening, as Ivy was leaving the library, she saw Matthew standing by the entrance, talking to a group of friends. Her heart skipped a beat, and she hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to approach him. But then, she remembered the warmth in his eyes when they'd spoken on the bench, the genuine interest he'd shown in her research. She took a deep breath and walked towards him.

"Hey, Matthew," she said, a nervous smile playing on her lips. "I didn't realize you were here."

Matthew turned, his face lighting up with a smile. "Ivy! I was just about to head out. What are you doing here so late?"

"Just finishing up some research," she replied, her gaze lingering on his face. "I'm working on a paper for my history class."

"History, huh? That's interesting. I'm actually taking a history class myself, but it's more focused on the modern era."

"Really?" Ivy said, her interest piqued. "Maybe we could compare notes sometime."

"I'd like that," Matthew replied, his eyes twinkling. "I'm always up for a good intellectual debate."

As they chatted, Ivy noticed that Matthew's friends were starting to look at them with a mixture of amusement and curiosity. She felt a blush creep up her cheeks, but she tried to ignore it, focusing on the conversation with Matthew.

"So, what are you working on?" Matthew asked, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "I'm not supposed to tell anyone, but I'm writing a paper on the rise of social media and its impact on political discourse."

"That's fascinating," Ivy said, her eyes widening. "I'm actually doing a paper on the role of women in the suffrage movement. It's a bit of a different era, but I think there are some interesting parallels."

"I bet there are," Matthew said, nodding thoughtfully. "I'd love to hear more about it sometime."

As they continued to talk, Ivy felt a sense of connection growing between them. It was more than just a casual conversation; it was a shared intellectual curiosity, a mutual respect for each other's minds. For the first time, she felt like she was truly seeing Matthew for who he was, beyond the charming smile and the easygoing demeanor.

"Well, I should probably get going," Ivy said, glancing at her watch. "It's getting late."

"Yeah, me too," Matthew said, his voice tinged with regret. "But hey, maybe we can grab coffee sometime and talk more about our papers?"

Ivy's heart skipped a beat. "I'd like that," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll let you know when I'm free."

As they said goodbye, Ivy felt a surge of excitement mixed with a touch of trepidation. She had a feeling that this was just the beginning of something new, something that could change everything. But she also knew that she had to be careful, to not let her hopes get ahead of her. After all, she had been burned before.

But for now, she allowed herself to savor the moment, the warmth of Matthew's smile, the promise of a future conversation, a future that held the possibility of something more. The wind had shifted, and Ivy felt a glimmer of hope, a sense of possibility, that she hadn't felt in a long time.
