My First And Last Love
Chapter 1: Ivy's Dilemma
Ivy sat in the university library, her brow furrowed in concentration as she pored over the thick textbook in front of her. At just 20 years old, she was already well on her way to earning her degree in economics, her sharp intellect and tireless work ethic propelling her to the top of her class.
While her peers often struggled to keep up, Ivy thrived on the challenge of mastering complex theories and models. She took meticulous notes during lectures, asked insightful questions, and spent countless hours in the library, determined to fully understand every concept.
Yet despite her academic success, there was a nagging feeling of emptiness that Ivy couldn't quite shake. As she sat there, the words on the page began to blur as her thoughts drifted to a certain curly-haired boy who occupied far too much space in her mind.
Matthew. The very name sent a flutter through Ivy's heart. They had been classmates since freshman year, and over time, Ivy had found herself increasingly drawn to his warm smile, his quick wit, and his genuine kindness. He was popular and well-liked, the kind of person who seemed to effortlessly navigate the social landscape of university life.
Ivy, on the other hand, tended to keep to herself, preferring the solace of her books and the comfort of her own thoughts. She had always been a bit of an outsider, and the idea of putting herself out there and risking rejection terrified her.
But as she watched Matthew laughing and joking with his friends in the library, Ivy couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be the one by his side. She imagined the two of them engaged in lively discussions, sharing ideas and dreams, perhaps even...
Ivy shook her head, chastising herself for letting her mind wander down that path. Matthew was simply out of her league, she told herself. He was charming, confident, and undoubtedly had his pick of girls. Why would he ever notice someone like her?
With a heavy sigh, Ivy turned her attention back to the textbook, determined to push aside her feelings and focus on her studies. But as the words on the page blurred once more, she couldn't help but steal another glance at Matthew, her heart aching with the weight of an unrequited love.
The next few weeks passed in a blur for Ivy as she immersed herself in her studies, determined to push aside the distracting thoughts of Matthew that had been plaguing her. She spent long hours in the library, poring over textbooks and research papers, and her dedication paid off as she continued to excel in her classes.
One afternoon, as Ivy was hurrying across the campus quad, her arms laden with books, she suddenly found herself colliding with another student. The impact caused her to lose her grip, and the books tumbled to the ground in a scattered mess.
"Oh, I'm so sorry!" Ivy exclaimed, quickly bending down to gather the fallen books. "I should have been more careful."
"No, no, it's my fault entirely," a familiar voice replied. "Here, let me help you with that."
Ivy's heart skipped a beat as she looked up to see none other than Matthew kneeling beside her, his curly hair falling into his eyes as he reached for the scattered books.
"Matthew," Ivy breathed, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I, uh, I didn't see you there."
"Clearly," Matthew chuckled, flashing her a warm smile. "I'm the one who should have been paying more attention."
As they worked together to gather the books, Ivy couldn't help but be acutely aware of Matthew's proximity, the brush of his fingers against hers sending a jolt of electricity through her body. She silently berated herself for being so flustered, cursing her inability to maintain her usual composure.
"There, all done," Matthew said, handing the last book to Ivy. "I hope nothing got damaged."
"No, everything seems to be in order," Ivy replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, Matthew. I, um, I appreciate your help."
"It's my pleasure," Matthew said, his eyes meeting hers for a brief moment. "I'm just glad I was here to lend a hand."
An awkward silence fell between them, and Ivy found herself desperately searching for something, anything, to say. But before she could formulate a response, a group of Matthew's friends called out to him from across the quad.
"Hey, Matt! You coming to the party tonight?" one of them shouted.
Matthew glanced over his shoulder and waved. "Yeah, I'll be there!" he called back, before turning his attention back to Ivy. "Well, I should probably get going. But it was nice running into you, Ivy."
"Likewise," Ivy managed, her heart sinking as she watched him jog off to join his friends.
As she stood there, clutching her books to her chest, Ivy couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. She had been so close to Matthew, yet it had felt like there was an invisible barrier between them. He was friendly and polite, but Ivy couldn't shake the feeling that he saw her as nothing more than a casual acquaintance.
With a heavy sigh, Ivy turned and continued on her way, her mind once again consumed by thoughts of the curly-haired boy who had so effortlessly captured her heart.
