Episode 6

Two weeks passed very quickly. Micaela was already in the United States, while Evelyn was at the town hall with Alexandre.

A pen is held by Evelyn's thin, fragile, and cold fingers. The dark expression on her face revealed how devastated her emotions were.

She thought about dropping everything and running away. But she couldn't, even though her sad heart yearned to.

Some tears insisted on falling from her eyes as Evelyn gripped the pen tightly in her hand.

Alexandre, observing her hesitation and sadness, handed her a tissue and tried to comfort and encourage her to leave that place soon.

“Miss! I know this is very difficult to do. But unfortunately, you have no choice. Your sister is already in the United States studying, and Mr. Sullivan made it clear that if you refused the proposal, he would carry out his threats.”

He looked at her firmly. Alexandre felt compassion for Evelyn, but what could he do if he was also there fulfilling orders?

Taking a deep breath, Evelyn signed the paper, and shortly after, they left the town hall with the marriage certificate in hand.

“Mrs. Sullivan? I will take you to your new home. Again, I apologize for my delay,” said Alexandre, opening the car door.

“I need to grab my things from my house!” replied Evelyn, looking at the empty passenger seat. “Yes, of course! We'll stop by your house,” Alexandre responded, closing the car door after Evelyn got in.

The drive to her home was calm and silent. She gazed at the street with tear-filled eyes. Alexandre watched her out of the corner of his eye. In the few weeks he had known Evelyn, he had grown not only to admire her but to care for her deeply. She felt like a sister to him.

The car parked in front of the old house with the low wall and rusty gate.

“Wait here!” Evelyn got out of the car and entered the house. Despite having lived a hard life alongside Micaela, Evelyn was grateful to God for having a sister and a home.

But now, drastically, her life had changed, and she had become the wife of a cold and ambitious man. She did not expect to be happy from that day forward.

After five minutes, she came out carrying a not-too-large suitcase, containing only a few clothes, underwear, and personal hygiene items.

Alexandre quickly got out of the vehicle to help her.

He opened the trunk of the car and placed her things inside.

Evelyn’s expression was frantically sad. She had married a stranger, was far from her sister, and would be living in a huge mansion, where she would feel even more alone.

Evelyn still hoped that one day a company would contact her.

She missed working in her field greatly.

They arrived at the Sullivan mansion.

Alexandre got out of the car to open the door for her, but Evelyn anticipated him.

“I was going to open it for you, but I was late.” He smiled faintly.

Evelyn stepped out and looked at him suspiciously.

“Please tell me the real name of the jerk who forced me to marry him.”

The expression on her face was one of rage and sadness.

Alexandre swallowed hard, feeling cornered by her.

“Unfortunately, I can't tell you that. He doesn’t want you to look for him. He said he doesn’t want any contact with you.”

Evelyn involuntarily pressed her lips together upon hearing the lawyer's argument.

“Okay! Tell him that I hate him with all my might. And never show up in front of me again, because I might just kill him with my own hands.”

Alexandre's eyes widened in surprise at her response.

He took her suitcase out of the car.

“Do you want me to go into the mansion with you?”

“No! Thank you for your help in ruining my life.”

She stepped away while holding the suitcase. The mansion's security guard opened the gate for her to enter.

Alexandre stood frozen for a moment. Yes, he felt a certain level of guilt for being a participant, even if indirectly, in the miserable life that Evelyn was now living.

Evelyn was warmly greeted by the mansion staff.

“Welcome, Mrs. Sullivan. I will take you to your room.”

Soon the housekeeper led her to the bedroom.

Evelyn was completely amazed.

The room was enormous, with a large comfortable bed, the windows were made of glass divided by two curtains, one dark and the other light. She hurried to the window.

The mansion's garden was vast. There were various types of flowers and plants. A wonderfully beautiful and harmonious place.

"Would you like something to eat, madam?" asked the housekeeper.

"Just call me Evelyn. I would like a glass of water, please." She stepped away from the window. "What is your name?"

"Laura, madam," the housekeeper replied shyly.

"Ms. Laura, who is the owner of this mansion? What is his name?" Evelyn was determined to uncover the truth about her mysterious husband.

"Mrs. Sulivan, we have received strict orders not to inform you about your husband."

Laura lowered her head.

Evelyn moved a little closer to Laura.

"So, the wretched, miserable scoundrel of a husband doesn’t want me to know anything about him whatsoever? Is he very ugly? Fat? Thin? Short? Tall? Is he a criminal?"

She pressed the woman, insisting on answers.

"Madam, if we say anything, he said he would fire us. All of us who work here, we really need this job..."

The housekeeper's eyes filled with tears.

Evelyn let out a muffled grunt of rage.

"This man is a plague. Now I hate him even more."

"Thank you for your care. Don’t worry, I won’t pressure you about this."

Evelyn thanked her with a discreet smile.

"You're welcome, madam. I will bring the water you requested."

"No, no... I will get it myself. I want to see the place where I will be living from now on. Go rest a bit."

"Very well, madam. Lunch will be served at eleven-thirty in the morning. If you'd like to change that time, just let me know."

The housekeeper quickly left.

Evelyn organized her things in the closet.

Then she went downstairs to the kitchen.

She got a bit lost trying to find it, but soon following the smell of food, she discovered Laura cooking at the stove.

Evelyn went to the water cooler and drank.

"Do you need help?" she asked, looking at Laura.

"No, no, madam. Feel free to wander around the house and the garden."

Laura gently declined Evelyn's offer of help.

"Okay. Now I’m going to take a shower. I’m a bit wet from the rain."

Evelyn’s clothes were dirty, and her hair was still messy.

But the sadness was so great; she didn’t care about her appearance.

The rain had stopped shortly before Evelyn left the registry office.
