Episode 4

Dereck didn't wait for the next day as he had told the lawyer, but he contacted him, and the lawyer returned to the office that afternoon.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Norton!" Alexandre greeted him with one hand on his pants pocket and the other holding a briefcase.

The embarrassment from the morning was enough to make him wary at that moment.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Fonseca! Please, have a seat!" Dereck asked the man in front of him. The CEO seemed to be in a good mood.

"Do you already have a concrete answer about your grandfather's inheritance?"

Alexandre asked, sitting down on the chair facing the desk.

"Yes! I will marry that stranger! But I will draw up a contract for her and me to sign. I don't want her showing off that she married a Norton."

Dereck responded in a husky, impactful voice, leaving the lawyer perplexed by the CEO's response.

"A contract? What do you mean, Mr. Norton? What are you talking about?" Alexandre inquired, adjusting himself in the chair.

"I want to make a marriage contract with that woman," Dereck gestured, his arms on the table arrogantly.

"And what do you want to include in this contract?" The lawyer asked, astonished.

Derek beckoned with his right hand to Adriano, who was sitting in a small armchair listening to the conversation between his boss and the lawyer.

Adriano handed Alexandre a sheet with some terms for the marriage contract.

He read each written term slowly. His eyebrows furrowed with each term he read; he was horrified by Dereck's demands for his future wife.

Marriage Contract

"**************"

"Mr. Norton? Do you really think Miss Evelyn Aguiar will agree to all these terms? You don't even know if she'll agree to marry you."

Alexandre asked, incredulous at Dereck's demands.

Never in his career as a lawyer had Alexandre met someone so ambitious and heartless.

"Mr. Alexandre Fonseca, whether she wants to or not, she will have to sign this contract and marry me... If she doesn't want to, I will have to use other means to force her to do it. This marriage is unwanted for me, but I have to marry this woman to receive the money from my grandfather's inheritance."

"And what will you use to force her to marry you?" Alexandre asked, already apprehensive.

"I found out that my future wife is a thief," Dereck exclaimed arrogantly and coldly.

"What? A thief?"

Alexandre was surprised by the revelation.

"She was fired from the previous company she worked for! She embezzled almost two hundred thousand reais in the last six months she worked as a manager in that company."

Alexandre was perplexed by Dereck's statements.

"That's very strange! If she did that, then why wasn't she arrested? That's the kind of crime that leads to detention."

Dereck was expressionless for a few seconds.

"I don't know why she wasn't arrested either, but I believe she may have had an affair with one of the company's directors."

"So, are you going to use this against her?"

"Yes! But to show that I'm not a monster, I'm going to send her sister to the United States to finish medical school with one of the best specialist medical professors."

"So, you already have it all planned out, you want to get her sister out of the way so as not to interfere with your plans?"

Alexandre seemed annoyed. He never imagined that such a rich man could be so evil as to make such a petty contract.

"I see you are as smart as I am... Now go and do your job... If she accepts the demands, I promise I will pay you much more than my grandfather paid you."

"You don't have to! Your grandfather always paid me very well... So keep your money..."

Alexandre left with large strides.

He was only there because of his work. All of Dereck's demands left his heart heavy. But having been Luiz Sulivan's lawyer, he had no choice but to carry out his work diligently.

The next day, Alexandre woke up early to visit Evelyn.

Evelyn slept peacefully in her house, having spent most of the night awake with severe headaches.

Her front door was locked, Micaela had gone to college, where she was studying medicine.

Evelyn was jolted from her bed by an unexpected urge when she heard the bang of the door.

Someone was knocking insistently.

"Oh, my God! Who could it be at this hour?"

Getting out of bed, she forgot to comb her messy hair and, still sleepy, walked to the door.

"I don't believe it! Did you forget the keys again, Micaela?"

Evelyn shouted as she tried to open the door, and unlocking it, her eyes widened, and she froze.

"Good morning, Miss? Can I have a word with you?"

The insistent visitor was Alexandre Fonseca, the Sulivan family lawyer.

The handsome, attractive, and well-dressed man looked at Evelyn's face expectantly, hoping to hear a positive answer.

Snapping out of her trance, she blinked, giving him an uncertain smile.

"Good morning, Sir! What was your name again? And what can I do for you?"

Alexandre smiled discreetly and, extending his hand, greeted her again.

"Good morning, Miss! I am Alexandre Fonseca, the Sulivan family lawyer! I am here to speak with you."

Evelyn looked at the radiant man in front of her.

He was very handsome.

"Yes, Mr. Alexandre! Please, come in!" She shook Alexandre's hand amicably.

The house was well organized, Evelyn had tidied everything up the night before. As she was unemployed, she spent her time tidying up the house.

Evelyn had sent her resume to a few companies, but so far none of them had contacted her.

Alexandre sat down in a small armchair in the living room.

Evelyn accompanied him and sat on a chair next to him.

"Well, Miss Evelyn! What brings me here is a rather serious matter. You may not want to accept the proposal."

Evelyn, rubbing the space between her eyebrows, looked at him in astonishment.

"Proposal? What proposal are you talking about? Who sent you here?"

"It was Mr. Sulivan who sent me," replied Alexandre serenely.

"Sulivan? But who is this? I've never even heard of this man. What does this man want with me?"

She was a little altered.
