Episode 4

I frowned as soon as I arrived at the hospital; the smell of medicines and antiseptics was not entirely to my liking. After all, for the past three years, whether it was Christmas, New Year, spring, or winter, I spent every moment in this hospital ward.

I walked through the hospital corridors to the room where my sister was staying.

"How are you here so early? I thought it would take you a little longer to come, Fernanda."

Holy bananas and pears.

Because I was distracted, I didn't realize that Andrew, my sister's young and handsome doctor, was in front of me. He is a tall man with tanned skin, his facial features are very masculine, he has beautiful brown eyes adorned with thick eyelashes that look like a feather fan; his personality is jovial and relaxed. Andrew is the kind of person who could befriend anyone. Very pleasant.

I bit my lip as I thought of what excuse to give him. I didn't want him to know that I had been fired, given that in recent days I had done nothing but talk about my new job and how much I liked it. It's not like I was showing off like a peacock that wanted to court its peahen. Well, I was doing it; if I was honest with myself, I had a big crush on the man in front of me, but I never dared to tell him or give him any indication. I was afraid that our friendship would be ruined.

"I got the day off because…" I lied. "Because my boss had to go to…" I didn't know what to say. As I looked around, my eyes landed on an advertisement about vasectomies. "Oh, yes! He had to go get a vasectomy."

Andrew chuckled. "Vasectomy? Well, that doesn't matter. Go where Angelica has been vomiting all morning from the aftereffects of her treatment. Although I tried to cheer her up, it seems I have failed."

"Okay."

Knowing that my sister was feeling unwell, I quickly said goodbye to Andrew without dwelling on admiring his laughter. When I entered Angelica's room, a faint smell of disinfectant invaded my senses.

"Hello, hello ~"

My sister, hearing my voice, looked up from the storybook she was reading. Next to her was a tray that I assumed was for when she felt nauseous.

The eleven-year-old girl before my eyes looked pale and emaciated; her hair, which in the past had been a light color like the small glimmers of the sun at dawn, had disappeared completely, her hazel eyes were surrounded by dark circles, her lips were dry and chapped. But in my eyes, she was still the most beautiful person in the world. My little princess.

"Fer, you came," she commented with a fragile smile that seemed like it could disappear at any moment. "Is my wig ready yet?"

Hearing the excitement in her tone, I smiled. "It just needs a few small touch-ups. Maybe it will be ready this weekend, and we can go out to eat to show it off."

"Your hair will grow back, right? I'm not like Rapunzel's stepmother, am I?" she asked worriedly.

I ran my fingers through my black hair, which was now close to my neck.

"You're not. My hair will grow back. But you know what, I like this style better. Don't you think I look more beautiful?"

"You're the most beautiful, Fer. How was your job?"

"Very good, my boss is a very good man, who when he found out that you were feeling unwell. He gave me permission to come see you."

Angelica laughed at my words, which was then hidden by a racking cough that was not at all feigned.

My sister was sick, very sick. She was dying; I could see it. Although I have tried to be optimistic about her treatment, it has not given the expected results; nothing seems to work for Angelica.

I remember the first time I found out that she had leukemia. At that time, I was at my part-time job when the literature teacher called me to tell me that my sister had fainted in class, so she had been taken to a hospital.

I felt so helpless at that time. I had no one by my side, not a family member, as they live in distant cities, nor a friend, because since my parents died and being busy working without having time for myself, all those people I considered friends moved away. I was too busy with work to go out with them, so they gradually removed me from their circle of friends.

So, when they gave me the results of the studies they did on my sister, I thought my world was falling apart. I felt so alone and helpless. After all, I knew that something like cancer was like a death sentence. In addition to the fact that I did not have sufficient resources for the treatment, I felt like I was dying. But then Andrew explained to me that my sister's cancer was detected in its early stages, so there was a much greater probability that she would recover. He also helped me find some foundations that help people with limited resources.

"So, your boss, he is… Is he handsome?"

I smiled at my sister's question. For a moment, the immaculate image of my elegant and sexy boss came to my mind, well, although he was now is ex-boss.

"Very handsome, he looks like those book protagonists. He has such deep blue eyes, and his hair looks soft to the touch as if it were silk."

Of course, if we remove that cold aura and intimidating look. Max Hidalgo would undoubtedly be the epitome of beauty. However, that is something that my sister doesn't need to know.

"Let's not talk about my boss anymore and tell me, what kind of story does the princess want me to read? Horror? Romance? Or of princes and princesses?"

Angelica smiled sideways, adopting a meditative pose, as if she were thinking about her answer when it was more than clear what she would choose.

"Horror, horror, sister, please."

Yes, I knew that would be her answer.
