"You must be the girl Chris mentioned over the phone."
My initial reaction was to be confused, but then I remembered that Chris must have made the call when I was trying clothing on at the store.
"And you must be the famous singer, Lee Felix."
As I had envisioned, he appears handsome, much like a leading male character in one of my novels. The leather attire he wears demonstrates that he possesses a rocker vibe. It is common for male leads in fantasy novels to be described softly, in something other than black leather.
"Just call me Felix." A chuckle erupts from his lips.
His voice is deep but not so deep that it frightens me. It has a soft and warm quality to it. Although I have not yet heard him sing, I am already able to feel what the citizens must be feeling.
I turn my attention to the surroundings. This is the definition of a bar. It is quite crowded. Throughout the room, there are a number of people.
"Can I talk to you for a second?" Chris glances over at Felix, who nods in acknowledgement. "Yeah, sure man."
The two of them walk toward a private corner where they are still visible, but not close enough to where I can observe what they are saying.
Whatever they may be talking about, it appears to be a serious matter.
In the midst of the bar, I begin to walk around. It appears that everyone is chatting even though I cannot make out a single word. The atmosphere remains lively and fun.
"Hello, Miss!"
When I look over, I see a man with a group of other men waving at me from his table.
I point a finger at myself. "Me?"
His laughter is accompanied by a nod of approval. "Yeah you! Come over here!"
There is a feeling of cheeriness throughout his entire table and it makes me so happy to see it. I am compelled to join them. There is no way I could have fun like this back in the underground mansion. More than ten minutes of conversation with the other
subjects was prohibited. Even when speaking, we were unable to display any emotion.
The man pulls up a chair for me to sit at as I run over to the table excitedly. As soon as I am seated, he is very close to me. According to my understanding, this is how humans are initially connected to one another.
"Here miss, have some of this." As he slides a cup over to me, his breath seems to creep down my neck. "It's really good, try it."
I examine the contents of the cup. Despite its funky smell, it may actually taste better than it smells.
Upon turning over to face him, I jump at the sight of his face so close to mine. The reason I choose to ignore it is that it must be a reflection of how humans interact in the outside world. "What is this?"
Since I have only been exposed to water, I am extremely curious when I see liquids of a different color and smell.
"It's tequila" He smiles, only leaning in closer. "It's sweet, you must give it a taste."
Sweet? That made my eyes sparkle. I am taking advantage of this opportunity to try new things. Even though it is quite late, I am amazed by how many people are still up, chatting, and enjoying themselves. As a matter of fact, I do not even feel tired. Despite being isolated, I had to force myself to sleep because there was nothing to do but read novels and engage in some activities.
"Okay!" I beam, squinting my eyes as I grasp the glass. I place it against my nose. "I'll try it-"
"AHEM."
As the sharp voice hovered over me, I suddenly flinch, startled.
I almost choke when I see that horrendous expression on his face. A dark glare emanates from Chris's eyes as he crosses his arms across his chest. Almost resembles the look master would give me when he got angry with me.
"Why did you wander off by yourself?" he scowls, taking the cup away from me. After looking inside of it, he grunts and spills the liquid into the nearby plant.
In a pouting mood, I stand up. "Hey! I was going to drink that!"
When he slams the cup on the table so forcefully, the entire bar has fallen silent, facing us.
"You still have a lot to learn about the real world."
The incident does not seem to be a big deal - it was just a drink... I do not know what I was doing that was so detrimental. I glance over at the man with whom I was seated. The expression on Chris' face frightened him so much that he scooted away so far.
My attention is drawn back to Chris. "I'm not a kid!...I-I was just having fun..."
In response, he rolls his eyes and glances at the man sitting at the table.
It is as if he completely ignores me and grasps him by the arm. "Let's have a little chat outside."
In speaking to him before dragging him outside, his voice was crisp and clear.
Immediately after this incident, the remaining men turned away as if nothing had occurred, and the bar slowly began to buzz up again.
After a brief moment of confusion, I realized that Chris is an assassin, and his glare was incredibly sinister just now. There can be no good in this, since he only harms men.
Taking a step forward quickly, I am stopped by a voice. "Don't mind that."
In a flash, I turn around. "What?"
Felix stands before me holding a fresh blanket. I look towards the door and then at him. "But..."
"Just leave it be." he reassures me softly. "Come, let me show you to your room."
My gaze lingers on the door for a moment as I hesitate. "But..."
I turn my head back to Felix, who gives me a small smile before walking in the opposite direction, hoping I will follow.
A sigh escapes me. There is no other option for me but to follow Felix. There is nothing in my power to interfere with whatever Chris is doing out there.
However, it remains.
It does not make sense to me.
I was not acting in an improper manner.
Felix enters the narrow corridor. We are now entering a new, peaceful environment, leaving the lively hallway behind. Does he also reside in this bar? This establishment appears to contain more than just a bar.
"The bar is only open at night so there isn't any daytime distractions." Felix explains to me.
His pace is slow, but not slow enough to make me feel agitated. I think it is just right. As opposed to that assassin. The thought makes me roll my eyes.
Upon entering the room I will be staying in, Felix carefully places the blanket on the bed. My eyes are drawn to the surroundings. Despite the fact that it is night, so much light is coming in, which is unusual for me. The room has actual windows. I am not being held captive by anything. There is something so liberating about being in here, knowing that I can leave at any time.
While Felix pats the blanket comfortably on the bed, I walk over to the window and look out at the view outside.
"It's not much but at least you won't be out on the street. If you feel thirsty in the middle of the night, don't hesitate to get yourself a glass of water from the bar's kitchen. Also there's a lamp underneath the bed, i'll just go get that-"
"Felix?" I interrupt him. As he turned to face me, he paused to speak.
"How long have you known Chris?"
In the moment upon hearing my sudden words, I can see that he is confused as he stares at me blankly. Sighing, he slumps onto the bed.
"Hmm. I don't know...since we were kids?" He turns over to look up at me from the bed. "Why do you ask?"
My gaze is directed towards the window. From this perspective, I can see Chris hovering over the terrified man he took outside. Despite the fact that he does not seem to be hurting the man, I am still confused. Is there a reason behind this reaction?
"Has he...always been trained to be an assassin?"
In the absence of words, I say whatever comes to mind and hope Felix will understand what I am trying to convey.
A small smile appears on his face. "He was adopted into the Bahng assassination clan when he was five years old."
I am astonished by such words. "Five years old..." I mutter to myself.
He must have known from an early age that he was going to be an assassin...
In reality, it is somewhat bizarre, but I cannot participate in determining what is odd. The longest and most painful experiment of my life took place when I was five years old. The idea that another world was taking place outside those gates is strange to contemplate.
"So you shouldn't interfere with his work." Felix declares bluntly. "Trust me, Chris knows what he's doing."
His next move is to get up and walk towards the door. "If you need anything, don't hesitate to call out. I'm only across the hall."
I am left alone with my thoughts as he closes the door to the room.
I glance back out the window and accidentally make eye contact with Chris...but I do not turn my gaze away. There is no longer a man present. Upon placing my hand on the glass window, Chris simply looks up at me.
I am starting to feel sleepy after a long and eventful night. Within a blink of an eye, Chris is gone from my sight. Upon looking out the window, I cannot see him anywhere.
My body is telling me it is time to go to sleep.
