Chapter 7 - Silhouette

One hour earlier

A thin silhouette made its way towards the monitoring room.

They were going to act tonight. It knew it.

How can they even think that their plan is going to work with all these cameras around, it thought. Before they can put one single foot on the hallway's floor towards the dorm, more than twenty guards will already be there to stop them.

The silhouette began shaking its head.

Another silhouette was already waiting for it outside the monitoring room. They entered together.

"What are you doing here?" asked the surprised adults watching the few hundred monitoring screens in the room.

"Does Boss need something?"

"Yes, there's a kid going crazy in dorm 2. Father wants you all to go there and capture him"

"Why is he asking us? Aren't there enough guards there? And why haven't we picked up anything on the cameras?"

"Are you questioning my words? YOU dare to question ME?"

There was a chilling silence in the room as the thin silhouette spoke those words. The adults' faces began to lose all their color, fear clearly shining in their panicked eyes. They immediately bowed down.

"No, we wouldn't dare. Please forgive us *****"

With a disdainful look, the silhouette pointed at the door and all the grown-ups rushed outside, heading towards dorm 2.

"Finally, the busybodies left. It's your turn now. Show me what your magical hands and wicked mind can do!"

With that, the second silhouette positioned itself behind the screens and began tapping on the numerous keyboards as if it was playing a symphony only it could grasp the melody of.

Its fingers were flying on the keyboards. Character after character, note after note.

In less than five minutes, it managed to freeze all the cameras from canteen 1500 to dorm 1500, where all the useless ones were. Just in time too. A small kid had taken a fork out of his sleeve and was stabbing a cook's neck with it.

"They aren't joking those little ones" it said, slightly amused.

"Quickly, erase that last scene."

"On it boss!"

The thin silhouette left its companion in the monitoring room and rushed towards the canteen.

If that kid got caught, they would completely decimate his mind.

The closer the silhouette got to the canteen, the louder the voices and screams were.

Faster.

Using an invisibility skill, the silhouette managed to make its way amid the panicked kids and finally reached the little boy.

He was defending himself in the best way he could, but a guard had already kicked him in the stomach, pushing him harshly to the floor.

14999 was already gone.

Good.

As it approached the wounded kid, it knocked down the guards one by one, remaining unseen to all. A quick movement with the hand against the left side of their neck did the trick.

It knew it was lucky. The people guarding block 1500 of the lab were the most useless ones among the guards.

As soon as the ten guards were lying on the floor, it gave them a pill that would erase their most recent memories. It could see the little kid looking at the people on the floor with his mouth and eyes wide open.

Cute, it thought.

It quickly approached the cook's corpse and whispered in the kid's ear.

"Run if you want to escape with your friends."

It could see the kid turning in its direction as if it had seen a ghost. Fortunately, he did as he was told and began running towards the dorm.

The kid finally out of the way, it washed away the blood on the floor, water coming directly out of its body.

Once all traces of the murder were erased, it picked up the corpse and began running towards dorm 1500 until it arrived at a gaping hole in one of the walls.

Couldn't you have at least staged it as an accident 14999? Your 0 intelligence isn't just for show, apparently.

With a sigh, it summoned a few corpses it had collected in its inventory just for this day and put them on the floor next to the cook. It reached out its hand and a powerful burst of bright blue flames came out of it.

Most of the bodies were immediately burned to a crisp, only leaving on occasions a coal-black limb or the unrecognizable face of a deceased person behind.

The fire was brutal, even consuming a large part of the dorm's hallway.

Once it was satisfied with the result, it turned around, walking towards the monitoring room where its companion was still controlling the cameras.

You see this 14999? THIS is what you call a perfect escape... Haaaaaaaa, whatever would you have done without me.

With a smile on its face, the silhouette prepared itself to sound the alarm.

......-._.-._.-......

My left ear began itching. Somebody must have talked badly about me. While I scratched it, Pipsqueak suddenly popped up next to me. I froze, the entire group of children stopping in their tracks.

For a few seconds I didn't know if I was seeing an illusion or not but as I saw the mischievous smile spreading on his face, I threw myself on him, giving him a bone crushing hug...well almost. My strength was still 0 after all.

"How the hell did you manage to get here?" I asked, tears of relief falling down my cheeks.

Pipsqueak looked at me and suddenly began waving his arms up and down, frantically trying to explain what had happened.

From what I managed to pick up from his incessant rambling, a ghost had apparently saved him. "A she-ghost", he repeated at least five times.

I looked at him with a raised brow and crossed my arms.

"Oh great, you fell in love with a ghost."

His face turned crimson.

"N- No what the hell are you talking about...ho-how could I ever f-f-f-fall in love with a ghost. I haven't even had the chance to see her face yet!"

"Uh-huh, let's just go with that."

I turned around. Most of the children were giggling underneath their breath, making Pipsqueak's face even redder. I smiled.

"Okay enough fooling around. Pipsqueak is back from the dead...quite literally. We will celebrate it in due time. Now we really must continue moving forward, or we will never get to the shelter before dawn. Big kids, carry the smaller ones on your backs. From now on, we will run at a higher pace."

Having said that, I took a five-year-old boy in my arms and placed him on my back.

The appearance of Pipsqueak had re-energized us all with new-found hope. So, with all of our hearts lighter despite the danger and misery still looming behind us, we continued our course towards salvation.
