Episode 14

MEL MAYER:

I enter the bathroom and gather my clothes. I don’t remember throwing them on the floor, but I bend down to pick up the piece and hold it tightly in my hand while I leave the bag with the other two dresses on the bathroom sink.

I exit the bathroom without looking at him. I quickly cross the office and leave without a word exchanged between us.

I check my phone and see a missed call from his number; it must have been while I was at the restaurant with Arthur.

I have improved a lot with the soup and the medication. Arthur seems to be a good person, but I don’t want to maintain contact with him.

I stuffed the clothes into a bag that I carry in my purse.

After closing my laptop, I start walking toward the elevator, and suddenly I feel his presence near me.

We enter the elevator together. The silence between us is eerie.

“See you tomorrow, Mr. Connor!” I say, trying to break the barrier, since we will be working together and seeing each other almost every day; I don’t want this unpleasant atmosphere between us.

“Goodbye,” he replies curtly, stepping out first with his hands in his pants pockets when the elevator stops on the ground floor.

I watch him walking away, my eyes following him until he disappears from my sight.

I take a deep breath as I see him moving away.

I wait a few minutes at the bus stop, which arrives completely packed.

When I reach my apartment, Daniela has already arrived.

“Good evening, gorgeous!”

She says, giving me a hug.

Daniela is much more than a friend to me; I consider her like a sister.

“Good evening, Dani!”

“Mel? And what’s with the designer clothes? I think I saw you leave in something else…”

“Oh! Yes, darling. I went out, but I arrived soaked at the office and sneezing. Dennis asked a friend of his, who is a doctor and has a store at the mall, to bring me a dress.”

Daniela looks at me, not quite understanding.

“Mel? Since when do you call your boss Dennis? Are you two together?”

At that moment, I felt a wave of embarrassment wash over me.

“Sorry. I forgot to call him Mr. Connor. We're separated. There’s nothing between us.”

Daniela steps a bit closer to me. I could already imagine what she wanted to say.

“Are you sure there’s nothing more between you two?”

“Of course, I’m sure. Now I'm going to take a shower and try to sleep…”

I step away from her. I can’t tell her what happened today between Dennis and me. It’s better that no one knows about our feelings.

DENNIS CONNOR:

Being so close and not being able to embrace the woman I want is incredibly tormenting. I don’t think I can forget her anytime soon. But I know I need to firmly put a stone on my heart, and to hasten that process, I've decided to marry Amanda in a month.

I leave the office and head to a mobile phone store in the mall. I buy a new device and put my old SIM card in it.

I go to my apartment and take a shower, then open a bottle of whiskey I have kept in my kitchen.

I turn on the music, playing some romantic songs.

After downing three glasses, my head starts to spin, and I doze off on the couch in the living room.

I wake up nearly two hours later to the sound of my apartment doorbell ringing insistently.

I look through the peephole and see Amanda.

“What the hell? I forgot that I was supposed to have dinner with her…”

I open the door, and she rushes in like a whirlwind.

“Dennis, I waited for hours for you to call; what happened? And what’s that smell of alcohol? And the romantic songs? You seem like a man suffering over a woman…”

And the worst part is, she’s right. I’m suffering because of Miss Mayer.

“Is there another woman, Dennis? Are you seeing someone else? It makes no sense to leave me waiting…”

She starts crying as she sits on the sofa.

I turn off the music and sit beside her.

“Amanda, we’re getting married in a month!” I say with no emotion.

She quickly stops crying and hugs me tightly, a smile spreading across her face.

She caresses my body, and we kiss. I’m on top of her, tasting her lips that have lost all their flavor for me.

“I want to make love!” she tells me, hands on my backside.

Amanda is truly beautiful... But it was only after getting involved with Mel that I realized I didn’t love her the way I always thought I did... My entire history with Mel also served to open my eyes and see that I had merely formed an emotional dependency on Amanda... Amanda runs one of her hands over the sweatpants I was wearing... I was without underwear and shirt.

I quickly get up... I didn’t want to have sex with her.

“Don't tell me you’re tired?” she asks, irritated...

I hear her words and immediately remember that we’re getting married in thirty days, so I needed to have sex, and maybe that would help me forget about that ungrateful girl...

Once again, I lean over her, lifting her dress.

“Dennis, do you have a condom?”

“It’s in the bedroom. I’ll go get it.”

Amanda doesn’t like to use contraceptives, so we only have sex with a condom...

I stand up quickly and she follows, hugging me from behind...

I go to a drawer in my bedroom and take out a condom. I confess I couldn’t get my friend down there to rise, but I think it won’t be a problem since Amanda and I have had sex a few times, of course, nothing compared to what happened between me and Mel... That was something out of this world. Just thinking of her on top of me, moaning, making that face of pleasure, gets me hard as a lever.

I have sex with Amanda as always, without much emotion. Soon after, I head to the bathroom and take a shower...

“Are we still going out for dinner?” she asks when she sees me leaving the bathroom...

“We can order something to eat here, or if you prefer, we can cook together.”

I try to be romantic...

“I’d rather go to a restaurant. You know I don’t like to cook... Come on, my dear?”

I was tired, both physically and emotionally, but soon she’d be my wife, so I say with a sleepy face...

“Alright! Let’s go.”

She kisses me and goes to the bathroom...

After a few minutes, we leave the apartment together...
