I give up screaming since it's useless, and I know this all too well. Hoping that the rest will cope with the loss of their mother and sister all in one day, I try to suppress the frustrations that simmer in my chest with no signs of going away.
" I feel like I am kidnapping, yet it's my daughter by blood. Isn't that just satire at its best? "
His bellyful laughter infuriates me to new heights I didn't know I could reach.
" I never agreed to be your daughter! "
" You can't deny your very blood. "
" Who keeps their daughter sandwiched between two f-ing men in tacky suits? "
" I forgot to mention I don't approve of that language. " His voice is stern. At that moment I understand to a certain degree what made this man powerful and influential.
" Well, I do what I want. " There's a slight quaver in my voice. I'm not playing but jumping into a furnace.
" And why would I care about that? It's of little concern to me. I care not of your displays of lack of manners in a show of rebellion, around here what I say ... is done regardless of anything. " It's a calm tone in how I imagine dragons would speak were they to take a human form.
" It wasn't even direct. " I grumble.
" And again I care not. It's still what it is. "
" F you! "
The guards beside me both simultaneously tense.
" I won't waste time repeating myself. "
We are on a bridge as the car comes to a stop. Cars hoot and drivers curse at him for stopping on the road but this man might as well have been in a different world.
" Bring her out. " The guards take his words as commandments. I'm dragged towards him. More guards step out of the car ahead and behind us. They form a protective barrier with one message. Behind them is a no-go zone for those who value themselves.
" Hang her over the bridge. " His face is emotionless as he utters his vile words.
" Why shouldn't I kill you? Drop you and your meaningless achievements into this river. " He leans in daring me to respond.
" Cause I'm your daughter. "
" Such a pity that there is nothing else that can save you at this moment and yet five minutes ago you were even refusing to be my daughter. Lesson one, and listen well, do not play with a fire when you're not a chef. "
" What the heck does that even mean? "
His response is shorter than what I expected.
" Simple, until you can tame, bend the fire to your will and even use it to benefit you. Do not play with it. "
He walks back into the car and my former position is taken back. My body shivers from the aspect of death being made a reality. We drive the rest of the way in silence before pulling up in the driveway of a mini palace.
Two boys stand on the stairway to the main door. They are copies of me but more masculine. One has his headphones and isn't aware of his surroundings but only of what's happening on the screen before him. The other stands in solemnity, observing me in silence. We all have the muddy brown eyes and long curls in our voluminous hair. Our skins are all brown chocolate. The oldest boy though seems to have a slight rush on his nose. It's evident that they are my siblings.
