“Again,” he said.
They spent the next couple of hours practicing. The more
rounds she shot, the more comfortable she became until she was loading, unloading, and firing without his ongoing
instruction.
“Take a break. I grabbed us some water and snacks,” he
said.
Setting her weapon down, Addie walked over to the table
where Knox was sitting and grinned. He knew she was
feeling the rush of adrenaline that most people got from
firing a gun.
“Go into the bathroom and wash your hands before you
eat.”
She studied him for a moment with heat in her gaze
before nodding her head and turning toward the bathroom.
She was definitely submissive, though he sensed that she
had some fire in her too. He wondered if she liked being told
what to do or if it was something that was ingrained in her
from a negative experience in her life. Based on the looks
that she gave him when he got a little bossy, he suspected
that she liked it.
When Addie came back to the table and sat, he slid a soft
pretzel with a side of cheese fondue to her.
“Where did you get this?” she asked.
“There’s a little bar down the street, I had Ash send one
of his employees to pick it up for us.”
She looked down at the pretzel and bit her lip, looking
hesitant.
“What? What’s wrong?”
As soon as her eyes met his, he knew that she was about
to lie to him.
“Oh, nothing, I’m just not very hungry,” she said, opening
the bottle of water.
Leaning back in his chair, Knox crossed his arms over his
chest and raised his eyebrow.
“We’ve been here for nearly four hours. It’s past
lunchtime. And I know you just lied to me. Eat.”
Her eyes widened and for a moment she looked like she
was about to deny that she had lied but must have decided against that. Tearing a piece of the pretzel apart, she dipped
it into the cheese and took a bite.
“This is really good,” she moaned.
Yeah, she had definitely lied. And if she were his, he
would spank her bottom for lying.
But she’s not yours and you have no right to spank her.
“Did you go to the courthouse yesterday like I told you to
do?” he asked between bites of his pretzel.
She nodded, “Yes. They said my concealed carry license
would come in the mail in two to four weeks.”
“Good. I think you did best with the Smith and Wesson
pistol. What do you think?”
“I liked that one the most. It was easy to handle, and I felt
like I was the most accurate with it. I want to buy that one.”
He nodded his head, debating if he should bring up her
reasoning for needing a gun again. He knew there was more
to just wanting it for protection. But in reality, it was none of
his business. She wasn’t his, so it really wasn’t his place to
try to force her to talk.
“Okay. I need you to fill out some forms, and we have to
run a background check, which takes a couple of days
usually. Do you have a safe already?”
Addie tilted her head, and he could tell that she hadn’t
even thought of that.
“You have to have it locked in a safe when you aren’t
carrying it on you. It’s a safety measure and that way if
someone were to ever break in, they wouldn’t be able to
easily steal it. Why don’t you ride with me back to the shop,
and I’ll show you some safes while you fill out the
paperwork?”
Blinking her eyes several times, Knox could tell that she
was unsure if she wanted to ride with him or not. He hoped
that by now she would have realized that he wasn’t a threat
to her, but at the same time, she was buying a gun because
she felt the need for that level of protection, so he guessed
that trust might be difficult for her.
“Or you can follow me?” he added.
She sent him a grateful smile and nodded.
“Okay. Let’s go,” she said.
Knox raised his eyebrow at her, “Not until you eat some
more of that pretzel.”
