Addie
The tall man stared down at her with concern. She knew
she seemed frazzled, and now she was asking for a gun.
Probably both bad signs.
“Okay. What kind of gun are you looking for?” he asked.
She looked around the store and then up at him and
immediately felt her eyes widen. Standing before her was a
six-foot-something broad man who was covered in tattoos
and had the most beautiful eyes she’d ever seen.
“I… uh…” she stuttered.
Closing her mouth, she gave him a weak smile and
cleared her throat.
You sound like an idiot.
“Um… A block? No, that’s not it… A clock? I don’t know, I
just need something that shoots bullets,” she said.
She was trying to remember the name of a gun that she
had seen in a movie, but she was pretty sure that he
already knew that she had no idea what she was talking
about.
“I think you might be talking about a Glock.” He smiled
down at her and stuck his hand out. “I’m Knox, by the way. I
own the store. I’ll help you find what you need. And you
are?”
Her gaze moved from his face and settled on the hand
that he held out for her. For a moment, she just stared at his
large palm and felt her mouth go dry until she remembered
her manners and reached out to shake his hand. Should a
handshake feel so… sexy?
“Addison… I mean… I go by Addie. Well, I go by Addie, but
my mother refuses to call me that but Addie is what I
prefer.” She closed her eyes and shook her head slightly
before opening them to look up at his face again. “Shit, I’m
rambling. Sorry.”
God, you are such a big dumb dummy.
“It’s nice to meet you, Addie. Let’s go have a seat and
talk about what you’re looking for.”
Ushering her to one of the tables near the small coffee
bar, Knox pulled out a chair for her to sit.
“Do you want something to drink? Coffee? Tea? Water?”
he asked.
She hoped that he couldn’t see her trembling. The rush of
the phone call she’d received, coming to buy a gun, meeting
this intimidatingly sexy man, and lack of food were all
making her feel out of sorts.
“Maybe coffee? If you have cream?” she asked quietly.
He nodded and prepared a cup of coffee for her. She
noticed his gaze travel back to her several times. Addie was
glad that she had taken an extra moment that morning to
apply some makeup and style her hair into a high ponytail
with a pink bow clipped to the base of it.
Setting the cup of coffee on the table in front of her, Knox
sat across from her at the small round table.
“Have you ever used a gun?” he asked.
She wrapped both of her hands around the cup, trying to
warm them and hopefully relax her a bit.
“No,” she said honestly.
She was trying to avoid looking at him because those
eyes felt like they pierced through her soul but when he
didn’t say anything after a long pause, she finally peered up
at him.
“Why do you need a gun, Addie?”
In a panic, she rose from her chair, and Knox instantly
stood too, towering over her. God, the man was built like a
brick building.
“I’m sorry. I should go. I didn’t think I’d have to answer a
bunch of questions. I just need a gun,” she said.
Fuck, why is he making this so hard? Why can’t he be
ugly and old?
Addie felt as though she was going to throw up… again.
She had already vomited in the small bathroom at the back of her boutique. Not that anything came up because she still
hadn’t eaten anything all day, and she knew that wasn’t
helping with her anxiety.
