The Forbidden Love

The first time Anita and Richard were caught together was when they were in the park. They were sitting on the green grass, holding hands and chatting.

Suddenly, they saw Richard's mother, Mrs. Johnson, walking towards them and her face was serious. Immediately, Richard stood up, trying to explain the situation. But Mrs. Johnson did not listen to him, and she yelled at Anita. "Shame on you! You gold digger! You are just trying to get near Richard because of his money!" Mrs. Johnson's words were very painful, and it offended both of them.

Richard lost his control and yelled back, "Mom! How can you say that? She is the most innocent and kind-hearted person on earth! You have really hurt her with your words so enough, Mom! Enough! Mrs. Johnson was taken aback by Richard's reaction. "You! How dare you yell at me? You are choosing this lowly girl over your own mother?

Mrs. Johnson said angrily. Richard was just standing here quietly, but he did not look scared at all. "Yes, I chose her. She gave me warmth, and care, and she stroked my head when I was feverish. She cries when she sees my scars from years ago.

But where were you, Mom? My dearest mother? Did you ever care about me or did you only care about those parties, those diamonds, and those so-called friends? Now, I have seen the truth and I will run away with Anita and when I leave, I hope I will never ever see you again!" Richard's eyes were full of tears when he was saying that,

But Mrs. Johnson was stunned by the fact that her son had grown up and talked back to her like never before. Then, Richard held Anita's hand, and they left the park heading to the train station,

leaving Mrs. Johnson alone. Two of them were hoping to leave this little town and to start a new life but none of them knew what were waiting for them ahead in the future.

SOCIETY's DISAPPROVALS

The love shared between the two main characters is a forbidden one, with society refusing to accept their pairing due to class divide.

When the couple are seen together, the disapproving gasps from people they pass in the street and the harsh, judgmental staress are aimed towards the poor girl, causing her to feel as though she is doing something wrong. This is evident in the line "Lilly could feel people's eyes on her whenever they walked side by side. She felt as if she was being watched.

This paints a clear picture of society's cruel nature and how it does not affect just the couple but individuals too. The notion of society's disapproval is continued when the pair are faced with verbal abuse on the street leading to the malicious comments from strangers.

Lilly is forced to endure public humiliation at the hands of those insulting her but also causing scenes in the middle of the street, "a tall man with greasy hair and a sneer across his face shouted 'well, well, look at this.

The little pauper is trying to walk shoulder to shoulder with a gentleman'. The use of direct speech and derogatory language in the insult towards the poor girl helps to illustrate the harsh reality of the poor girl and rich boy's situation. Additionally,

the insight into how society treats them individually and as a couple reinforces the defense that love can overcome any hindrance and can also help to shape a person's character and stand against society's role within people's lives.

This is summed up and exemplified in the line,

It didn't matter what anyone said or did on that street. All that mattered to her was that he had put his arm around her.

This is a pivotal point within the narrative as it shows that the couple's love can silence the noise of society, highlighting the power of love. This shows how the characters defy society, putting their love over fear.
