Ronni was leaning against the post across the street. One foot propped on the concrete pillar, he smoked quietly while watching the restaurant exit. The other waiters had already left more than thirty-five minutes ago, but his man in question was still there.
A few more minutes passed and soon "his man" came out, looking somewhat startled, glancing around, and when he noticed Ronni's imposing presence across the street, he stopped in his tracks for a moment, but then continued.
Ronni threw the cigarette down and with his hands in his pockets, he followed the individual. Noticing Ronni's unwanted presence, he stopped near a small square and waited for him to approach.
Ronni's imposing figure disconcerted the man in front of him.
"I don't want trouble, sir."
"You know very well what we are, that alone attracts a lot of trouble." Ronni stared intently at the other, but his wolf was at peace.
Raising an eyebrow, Ronni realized he could be a good wolf, but he wasn't one to fully trust anyone.
"What I don't want is trouble. My wife would kill me!" The man lowered his head, clearly showing his discomfort. "I didn't choose to be like this..."
Ronni didn't believe that this man could kill someone. He was a docile dog.
"Come on, let's walk."
"Where to?" he asked in a trembling voice.
"Don't worry, I just want to talk. Let's meet your family."
The man stopped walking.
"Believe me. For now, I'm your friend, until you change this situation yourself, then I won't be responsible for my actions," Ronni said.
The threatening tone did not go unnoticed by the other, who tried to ease his agony.
"My name is Philip. I have a wife and two beautiful boys. One night, when I was leaving the restaurant, I was chased." His voice was choked with emotion. "I believe it would have been my death, but someone appeared and scared the werewolf away. This was three years ago."
Ronni lit a cigarette as he walked and listened to Philip's account.
"It was all very complicated, I changed my work schedule so that on full moon nights I would be away from people. My wife was strong and accepted me, now when she wants to argue and calls me a stray dog, she's not lying..."
The man was silent for a while, but then tried to explain.
"I'm not a monster, sir. Sometimes my wolf appears to my children, they play ball in the yard." He gave a crooked smile. "My wife is on standby with the broom. She says that if I pull out a single hair from them, she'll break me."
Ronni smiled as he imagined the scene. A family... a man with a family like that, wouldn't be a murderer.
"But someone is killing. I'm here for that."
"I noticed when I saw you. I knew you weren't someone ordinary or a simple wolf. Your mission is to eliminate the big bad wolf. I can feel it."
"Do you have any clue who this killer is?"
"No. It's been a while since I smelled it. I believe the wolves don't like the restaurant's food."
Ronni liked the light way the conversation flowed, it was as if he was still human. During the almost 30 minutes they walked to Philip's residence, they exchanged information about their lycan experiences. While Ronni opted for a solitary and wandering life, the other continued to be a family man, an almost human, controlled by his wife.
"You know, sir, my wife makes it very clear that if she catches me looking at any bitch, she will take me to be castrated. What will the life of a wolf be like without his balls?"
Ronni couldn't contain his laughter anymore. This Philip guy was pure comedy.
"Do you think it's funny? I'd like to see if you were the one being castrated."
"Calm down man, she's just kidding..."
"I'll introduce you to her, then you can tell me if it's just a joke."
Soon they arrived in a place further away from the port, with simple and small houses. Children ran through the cobbled street, some ladies chatted leaning against the wall. Ronni looked at everything with interest, it was good sometimes to feel that peace that all that represented.
They headed to a green-painted house, with many trees in the yard and from there they could hear shouts and laughter of children.
As soon as Philip opened the gate, two boys appearing to be under five years old ran into his arms, followed by a dog, all furry, who stopped in the middle of the way, looking at Ronni.
"Daddy, Mommy said that if you were a little late, she would end your joy." one of the boys said.
"What did she mean?" The other boy wanted to know.
Philip straightened his body, looking at the entrance of the house while stroking the heads of his two children.
"I think I'm in trouble."
Ronni found the man's face funny. He had real fear of his wife.
As they headed towards the entrance of the house, the family dog let out a whimper and ran with its tail between its legs.
"I think Bob didn't like you." Philip said curiously. "Your wolf must be really dangerous, it's the first time I've seen him run away from a threat."
"Bob?"
"Yes, Bob. Or do you think my sweet wife would let a bitch walk around her domain?"
Ronni was curious to meet this woman who ruled over a wolf.
"I believe you will save me from Paty's wrath. She will be polite in your presence."
At that very moment, a woman appeared through the doorway between the two boys. Paty was a redhead with short hair, with some freckles scattered across her face. Her body was a little plump, but even angry, her eyes sparkled when she saw her husband arriving safe and sound, which she tried to disguise.
"Is this the time?"
"But my dear, I'm only twenty minutes late!"
"Twenty-five minutes, Philip! Do you know how much can happen in twenty-five minutes?"
"We have a visitor, my dear…"
