ーー The more I love you, the more I want to devour you. Then when I have become one with this body, will this hunger and aching finally be relieved? The closer I get, the further away you become. I can see you at the end of a scorching desert, as if you were nothing but a faint illusion.
Yui arrives at the mansion.
Yui
Yui
ーー I came here just as they asked of me but this place…It really is the rumored haunted house, isn’t it? The people I asked for directions all gave me the same reaction too. There’s no mistaking it, right? (My relatives are at this kind of place? Really?) (Haa…That being said, it isn’t like my father is the type of person to make such a thing up.)
ー Thunder and lightning can be heard.
Yui
Yui
Kya…! Either way, I guess I’ll have no other choice but to check it out for myself.
ー Yui knocks on the front door.
Yui
Yui
…Excuse me!
ー Yui knocks on the door again after no response was given.
Yui
Yui
Excuse me!! No reply…Aahー What to do? There’s nobody home after all. The lights aren’t on either. No surprise, really. This place is known amongst the neighborhood for being haunted. A person related to the church living in a house where ghosts are rumored to appear…That must be some sort of mistake, right?
ー A flashback ensues
Yui
Yui
Eeeeh…!? You’ve been summoned at a church abroad? Tomorrow you’re already leaving…?
komori
komori
Don’t raise your voice like that, Yui. Calm down.
Yui
Yui
Calm down, you say? Wouldn’t anyone be surprised if they were suddenly told such a thing…?
Yui
Yui
Besides, where are they transferring you to?
komori
komori
Hm. About that, apparently they’ve decided on Eastern Europe.
Yui
Yui
E-Eastern Europe!? The East side of Europe?
komori
komori
Yes. When your father was young, I spent some time in that area.
komori
komori
An urgent official request for transfer came from the church.
Yui
Yui
No way…Then what will happen to this church?
komori
komori
They promised me to send a replacement right away. Do not worry about that matter. Besides, you are still here in Japan if something were to happen.
Yui
Yui
Huh
komori
komori
Yui…Listen closely. I’m thinking of going by myself.
Yui
Yui
 …!?
komori
komori
I can’t take you with me.
Yui
Yui
Don’t say that! You’re going alone…!? I want to go with you!
komori
komori
You can’t!
Yui
Yui
…!? Father?
komori
komori
I’m sorry. Living separate from you is rough on my part as well.
komori
komori
However, trust me that this is definitely for your own sake. Please understand.
Yui
Yui
You’re leaving your only daughter behind in Japan and say it’s for…my own sake?
komori
komori
Yui
Yui
(Father’s making a pained expression. Still, why can’t I just go with him?)
Yui
Yui
Can’t you turn down the offer?
komori
komori
I considered that many times. However, it’s a job that only I can do.
Yui
Yui
Something only you can do?
komori
komori
E-Either way, I’ve already made proper arrangements to ensure that you won’t have any trouble living here on your own. I will leave tomorrow night. Until then, pack all your things and rely on the people living at this address.
Yui
Yui
Who lives here?
komori
komori
I’ve never mentioned them to you before because of some family conflicts, but it’s the house of some far relatives. They are related to the church as well and are aware of the circumstances. They won’t harm you in any way, so please think of them as my replacement and don’t hesitate to ask them for help.
Yui
Yui
Yes…
ー Flashback ends.
Yui
Yui
(To think this place would turn out be the “haunted house”…) Haa…I should have just begged father to take me with him no matter what. (However, he looked so strict at that time, I have the feeling he didn’t want to take me with him no matter what I did or said.) (I wonder why he seemed so reluctant…?) (Besides, what’s a type of job only my father can do?) (He is just a simple priest. As for his speciality…Perhaps gardening?)
ー The front door opens.
Yui
Yui
Eh? Did the door just open by itself? No way, right?
Yui knocks on the door again.
Yui
Yui
"Excuse me! Is anyone home? I’m Komori’s daughter! I believe you’ve already heard the story from my father. I’m coming in, okay?"
Yui enters the manor.
Yui
Yui
(I went inside but just as I thought, it doesn’t seem like anyone is around.) (However, the door opened earlier, which means someone must be around! There has to be!) Haaー I guess I’ll let myself in. Uu…That being said, I’m still a little scared. However, I can’t just keep on standing here either.
Yui moves to the living room.
Yui
Yui
There really is nobody around. How strange…Then how did the door open earlier?) There must be some sort of mistake on the memo father gave me. (I don’t want to make him worry too much, but I’ll have no other choice but to contact him.) (But like this we won’t get anywhere…Let’s see…Where did I put my cellphone? …Huh!?)
Lightning strikes again.
Yui
Yui
Kya!
Yui
Yui
(I…I just saw the silhouette of a person in the light of the thunder!)
Yui
Yui
Uhm…Excuse me?
Ayato
Ayato
Yui
Yui
(Is he sleeping? But this person…) Hello? Are you a resident of this place?
Ayato
Ayato
Yui
Yui
Hello? Are you okay…? ( …!? I touched his skin for just a second and…He feels so cold!) Eh? He…He’s not breathing!? He’s dead!?
Yui
Yui
Ugh…!!
Yui
Yui
(What’s happening…! My chest suddenly hurts…!!)
Yui
Yui
What’s wrong with me…!?)
???
???
「ーー Where are you? Where? Where are you?」
Yui
Yui
(Someone’s voice is entering my head…) Haa…Haa…Either way…I have to call an ambulance. (I’m worried about my own condition as well, but first of all I have to do something about this person.)
ー Yui phones an ambulance
Yui
Yui
ーーH-Hello? I would like an ambulance. Uhm…There’s a dead person here. Eh? The address? If I recall correctly…
Ayato
Ayato
Nn…
Yui
Yui
…Eh?
Ayato
Ayato
Shut up…
Yui
Yui
Kyaaaaa!???
ー To be continued ー
Translation notes (1) The word used in Japanese here is 適当 or ‘tekitō’ which can be translated as ‘random’ or ‘vague’. In this context, I ended up going with a less direct translation of ‘making something up’. (2) This sentence ends up sounding really silly in English, but in Japanese Yui says the follow: 「東欧ってヨーロッパの東のこと?」In the first part of the sentence, the word ‘tōō’ is used, followed by the cluster ‘yōroppa no higashi’. As you can tell, while they convey the same meaning, both parts are pronounced differently which makes it sound less stupid and obvious compared to the English translation. From tublr
