You Have Been Notified
"And with this signature, we shall end our ill fate," Eisah Muyal declared pen in hand in the middle of the Duke of North's office.
Luxurious, spacious, and filled to the brim with rare books. So very familiar, yet uncomfortable.
"This is simply what our families chose for us. It is simply fate," He inspected the document I handed over.
"Well, we were not even there when they decided so. How is that fair!" My dress struggling to settle as I sat carelessly at the sofa in the middle of the room.
He sighed.
"With this seal, we are free from the marriage." Sparkles flew as he stamped with the seal of the royal family.
"As long as unc-"
"It's Royal Highness for you now, Lady Eisah." His smile hinting on annoyance.
"As long as Royal Highness, the king of this wonderful kingdom approves." I repeated in the most monotone tone possible.
A sudden knock on the door made me turn my head. And I got up swiftly, recognizing the eyes on the door.
The frail figure bowed as she entered.
"Lady Malis, no need to bow anymore. Your parents are important people from our neighboring kingdom." I approached, shaking my head upon the sight.
"My Lady, that is even more of a reason for proper behavior." Her eyes fixated on the floor.
"Vin- Lord Vindhi, will you please..." I turned to see his approaching figure.
"Lady Malis, it is a pleasure to see you on such a sunny day." He bowed back just like a fool.
"My Lord, it is an honor to have you in my vicinity." Hair covered her face, but I could see the rose of her cheeks coming through her blonde hair.
Two fools, actually. In love.
"I have this feeling it is my time to leave. I bid you farewell Lady Malis, Daughter of the honorable Solfylt family." I couldn't help but smile as I looked at my friend. After all that suffering, her unfortunate fate had turned into happiness.
After today, she would be able to marry the love of her life. All her family would be there, the new one, the ones who had looked for her all her life, and the cherry on top was that she was actually a noble.
"But I want you to take walk with me, Eisah. We have not been together in such a long time with all that happened." Her eyes finally sure and up looking into mine. Innocence that I did not have. The same feeling that made me sign this paper.
"Dear, I do not think the Lord will forgive me if I stay here for a second longer. After all, he is sick of seeing me."
"Oh. That is not true, I am sure..." She looked back at Vindhi for confirmation. And I knew she would not obtain it.
"Do not worry, tough. You will have an entire week with me for my coming of age ceremony." I smiled, waving my goodbye.
The sound of the closing carriage door was comforting. And I let myself cry.
As much as Vindhi may deny it. It was ill fate. When I was a young child, I admired him. Dreamt of the princess I would be when I married him. And then I grew up, and he became a powerful and compassionate leader. Someone you not only could admire but adore.
Was this love? Was this the loss of that cold comfort?
Because he had never felt the same, and it was a silent agreement. That would be our life for the rest of the times. I would have my adoration, and he would have his duty for his family.
That was until my most important friend, the maid who had grown up with me, developed that look in her eyes. And my fiancé that had never looked at Eisah with such softness looked back at Malis. And I knew it was their story, not mine.
So today was the day I removed myself from the narrative. Of course, I would not ignore my friends. Vindhi and Malis were important to me.
But now it was the time for Lady Eisah Muyal. Soon, my coming of age ceremony would come. I can drown myself in pastries and jewels. Not even father can censor me. Although, father will be very mad about the annulment of engagement.
Oh, well!
