I wake up on Saturday to Theo's shouts, saying that I have to visit some mines and sign some contracts. We live on a reservation a few kilometers from Massachusetts, in a rural area where everything we consume is made and harvested by the reservation. Here we have qualified professionals who take care of the mines, animals, agriculture, and more. We also have some businesses in the city, of course, most of the workers are werewolves, and as Alpha, I have to inspect to keep my pack always supplied.
I go down the stairs towards the kitchen with Theo at my heels, citing my commitments and reminding me that I had promised to go to the club with him today.
"Theo, I think it's best to reschedule that club outing, we have a lot of work today and I have to read some contracts before the meeting with the Alpha Council next week," I say at the end of the stairs.
"When don't we have work, Roman? If it's like this, we'll never go to the club," he says as we enter the kitchen.
"Good morning, princess!" I greet Mia, who is sitting with a plate full of pancakes and honey.
"Good morning, brother! Good morning, Theo!" she says smiling. "What's this talk about a club? I want to go too."
"Good morning, Mia! No clubs for you. What have you ever seen, princesses don't go to clubs," says Theo as if he were Mia's brother too.
"You guys are hypocrites! I can't go to a measly prom with Lucca but you guys can go to the club, I don't want to see you in front of me," she says, already getting up from the table.
"Where are you going, Mia?" I say, holding her waist.
"Let me go, brother, I can't stand living locked up in this reserve anymore. Most of the girls in the pack are already married or live going to parties in the city and I can't do anything. I'm a prisoner in my own house," she says already crying, I feel bad because I know that I really hold Mia back, for her safety, her being my sister and a target for my enemies.
"When is this prom?" asks Theo, also feeling bad because he knows the poor girl lives trapped.
"In two months."
"Okay, let's do it this way: if Roman agrees to go to the club with me today, I'll take you and your human to the prom and babysit you."
"Really, Theo?" she says, her eyes shining. "Brother, you're going to the club with Theo today, right?" I look at Theo and he looks at me as if to say 'it's up to you now'. The wretch is great at resolving conflicts.
"All right, I'm going to the club and you're going to the prom, but let's talk about the rules for that later."
"I'll accept anything, brother!" she says already smiling and kisses my cheek. "I love you, brother, thank you!"
"Funny that I'm the one babysitting and I don't even get a thank you. Unfair world!" says Theo with a mock expression of revolt.
"Don't be grumpy, Theo, you're wonderful!" she says, kissing his cheek and hugging my friend. "Thank you for this, I owe you one."
"Miaa, why are you hugging Theo?" says a jealous Antony, entering the kitchen. "You can only hug me and Roman."
"For the love of the Goddess, Antony, stop being crazy. Theo is taking me to the prom with Lucca so I'm thanking him."
"You've thanked him enough, now you can let go, come here and give me my good morning kiss." What's this story, Roman?
"I made a deal with Theo, I'm going to the club in the city tonight with him and he's taking Mia and Lucca to the prom."
"Why didn't anyone invite me to the club too?"
"Because today you're going to stay and take care of Mia and the pack since you're my Beta."
"Only fair, since you live at parties from Monday to Monday," Theo tells Antony, without fear of losing his teeth for talking to his Beta like that.
"Sometimes I think we give Theo too much audacity, don't you think, Roman?" says Antony in a threatening tone.
"Let's stop the teasing and have our breakfast in peace. Soon after, I'll go to the mines to do an inspection and then I'll stop by to see the library renovation, which is almost ready. Antony, we need you to check with the farmers if they managed to save the apples from the pests."
"Right, brother, I'll go there as soon as I'm done with breakfast. Want to come with me, Mia? That way you get out of the house a little and we can spend the day together, then I'll take you to lunch in the city."
"Sure, brother! Did I tell you I love you today?"
"Not today, you sly thing." Mia makes a heart with her fingers, like the ones she sees in the dramas she watches, for Antony and lets out a soft "I love you", leaving our brother all goofy. I feel sorry for this girl's mate because with her sweet ways, she knows how to have the three of us in the palm of her hand.
The day goes by quickly with so much work that by the time I realize it, it's already night. I get a message from Theo telling me to be ready at 8 pm, which gives me 35 minutes to get ready until he shows up at my room.
After getting ready, I go down to the living room to find Theo, who's waiting for me, punctual as always. Mia and Antony are watching TV as they decided to have a movie night (Mia's idea, and Antony does everything she wants).
"Shall we go, Theo?" I say, already with the keys to my black Lamborghini in hand. "I'm driving today, so you're free to drink."
"Today was a day of good news only," he says, laughing, all excited.
"I hope all this excitement is just because of the drinks," says Mia with a frown on her face, and I thought Antony was the only jealous one in the family.
"The night is just beginning, my angel," he says, winking at her, who turns to rest her head on Antony's chest, looking displeased.
"Have fun for me too! And use protection."
"What a nice thing to say in front of our sister, huh, Antony," I say as I walk out irritated.
"I'm not a child anymore, I know very well what a condom is and what it's for."
"I don't want to ask where you learned that, my angel," says an angry Theo.
"I'm not a child anymore, I know a lot about things!"
"What things, Mia!" the three of us shout at the same time. She turns all red and replies awkwardly,
"About the things mates do, duh." I can't even speak, I'm so surprised by this girl; if I have a daughter when I have kids, I won't have the heart to handle it because Mia will be the death of me.
"Look, you deal with it, Antony, because I'm off duty tonight," I say, already pushing a petrified Theo outside and leaving Antony with a desperate look on his face.
"Your sister is still going to kill us," says Theo, getting into the car. I'd rather not think about it.
We arrived at the club and went straight to the VIP area. Since I can't drink tonight, I grab a soda and watch the people. I've been feeling restless since I got to the club, I feel my wolf restless, which has never happened before, I've always controlled my wolf well and we're always in sync, but tonight he seems agonized. Theo is at the bar talking to some girl, I haven't been out to party in so long that I feel like a displaced outcast amidst so many people. I approach the VIP area railings to observe the people dancing, the electronic music gives way to a less agitated and sexier song, I keep looking at that sea of people dancing, kissing, enjoying life, so inert to the things around them. I scan the crowd and that's when I see her, dancing with her eyes closed, completely inert to everything, gorgeous as hell, sexy as fire, I feel my body heat up, my wolf struggling to come out, I can't take my eyes off her dancing in a little red dress, but it's when she lets go of her long, curly hair that goes down to her butt, and what a butt!, that I feel beside myself, my wolf screams: 'mate!' I want to get close to her, to smell her scent, to touch her skin. Then she stops dancing and looks directly at me, and I feel like she, like me, catches her breath. We stand there staring at each other, for a woman who must be at most 5'5", she's the goddess of beauty herself. May the Moon Goddess help me.
I see a tall, strong boy touch her waist and whisper something in her ear, I feel my wolf possessive, asking for control, I clench my hands on the railing, crushing the iron structure (holding myself back from losing control in the middle of this club packed with humans) while I watch her walk away with that boy and a blonde girl glued to her arm. I feel someone touching my shoulder, when I look, it's Theo, with a worried look on his face.
"What's going on, Roman? Why are you crushing the guardrail?"
"I found her, she... she's here!" I say, trying to control my wolf who's going crazy wanting to go after our destined one.
"Her who, Roman? Who's here? Why do you seem out of control?"
"My mate, I saw her on the dance floor, and my wolf wants to come out, wants to go after her, wants to claim her, we want to know why a human was touching her waist," I say, trying to contain my anger at the memory of his hands touching what is mine. Theo's eyes widen as if he had seen a ghost.
"Here? But what pack does she belong to? Because our pack is the one that rules this region and the surrounding ones."
"I don't know, she might be here visiting, from some neighboring pack."
"But if that were the case, we should have been notified, a wolf doesn't enter other territories without notifying the Alpha of the pack that rules the region."
"I know, Theo, I'm trying to process things, something doesn't add up."
"Who's your girl? Where is she?" Theo asks, scanning the dance floor for any sign.
"She's wearing a red dress, black shoes, and her hair is down to her butt. She went into the booth next door with a boy and another girl."
"I'm going over there to probe for information, you calm down and hold your wolf."
"Theo, something's wrong."
"What's wrong?"
"She kept looking at me but she didn't come over to me, usually she-wolves always run to their destined wolf. She looked at me with curiosity, not recognition."
"Are you sure? Maybe she doesn't know you're her mate? Maybe her wolf didn't recognize you?"
"I'm sure, I don't know, Theo."
"I'm going, wait here."
