Chapter 4

I could keep on wondering and complaining about my life for hours without end, but that wasn't going to get me anywhere. And I sure as hell knew that.

While I try to shake those thoughts off, Xiao Zhao keep on crying in front of me. She mumbled different things I couldn't make sense of, and that wasn't making me feel any better. " Xiao," I called out to her, and she came to her senses. " Take a deep breath and relax." I said. "Please Xiao, I need to know what happened, so please tell me everything from the beginning." I know, I was pushing her too hard, but what else could I do. She was the only one who could tell me what had happened. She was my only chance of surviving in this hellish place.

Then, she did what I said, took a deep breath, calmed herself, and dried her tears. " It all happened too fast... " She said. "I was in the kitchen, preparing food for your highness, and when I came out... I saw your highness..." She hesitated, and lowered her eyes, avoiding eye contact. And I knew, whatever she was going to say next would be a lie, or at least not the whole truth. " I saw your highness...run after the... young master around the pool... And then... then your highness looses balance... and falls in..." Tears slide down her cheeks and then, another moment of hesitation.

"What happened next...I fall in and then??" I asked, grabbing her shoulders violently. I was acting like crazy, no, to be honest I was going crazy. I couldn't believe what she said. If Lilith really had fallen into the pool, why did she avoid my eyes? There has to be something else.

"Your highness doesn't know how to swim...so I rushed toward you as fast as I could... but when I got you out of the water... I couldn't hear your breath...and...and your pulse was weak..." She cried harder, and she couldn't even breath correctly.

"Xiao Zhao" I called her, hoping she would snap out of it. " Calm down! Breath, you need to breathe!" I said, when suddenly, she hugged me and cried on my shoulder. I freeze. I had no idea what I could do to make her feel better. I wasn't Lilith. Lilith was dead.

Yeah, Lilith was dead, but only for me, for her, she was still very much alive. And I didn't like that. I didn't want to lie to her, but either could I tell her the truth. Maybe, someday I would, but that day wasn't today. " Calm down, Xiao!" I said, patting her hair. " I'm fine. Can't you see? I'm perfectly fine."

"Your highness... I went to call for help... I did, but... but no one wanted to help...and when I came back... your highness... your highness wasn't breathing...there wasn't any pulse... I truly thought you died, ...but then... then you woke up." I could feel her trembling, just as felt her cold tear in my shoulder.

"Calm down Xiao!" I said. " Everything is fine, l'm fine." That's all I could say to her, nothing more and nothing less. Those words didn't mean much to me, but I'm sure they meant a lot to her. They may have been a lie to make her feel better, as l didn't know if anything was fine, but it was enough. It was enough for her, if not for me.

I had no idea what I was going to do from now on. I had no idea what to do with this new life I was given, but I would figure it out. I always do, no matter what.
