Emanuele was in his room, watching the lights reflecting off the ceiling from the cars passing by outside. He blinked occasionally and clutched the phone to his chest. Two days had passed since his encounter with Leandro, and the unread messages and missed calls from Luka kept coming.
He would have at least liked to say goodbye to him properly, but that would mean having to give him an explanation and, in reality, he didn't want to lie to him. However, he didn't want to tell him the truth either. But he had to face it sooner or later, after all, they both went to the same university, and although Luka attended on weekends, it didn't mean they wouldn't see each other at some point.
The cell phone rang again and he looked at the screen, Luka again. The photograph of the boy with the serious face made him smile.
“Don't go near him again, don't even breathe the same air around him, or I swear to you that Bianca and Frida will pay the consequences… besides, those perfect parents wouldn't be able to bear the death of their little girls. Neither will you be able to bear the guilt.”
Leandro's menacing gaze and the photographs that were thrown in his face made him sweat profusely. Luka was definitely not a person he should be around. Maybe he knew it from the beginning, from when he told him that he wasn't a good person.
“I carry a lot of things on my shoulders… From my grandparents, to my younger brother… I'm not someone that a person like you should be around.”
That's what he said at the time. Back then he thought he was exaggerating. That Luka just didn't want to talk to him because they were very different people. But, after meeting Leandro and being threatened, he couldn't help but think what kind of person Luka was, if he was like him and the way he acted around him was just a lie.
However, he still refused to believe that he had been lying to him all along. He didn't want to accept that all the nice moments with him were part of a farce. But if that was the case, the reality would hurt.
The cell phone rang again and he looked at the screen, but this time it was no longer Luka, but Andrea. He hesitated for several seconds before answering.
[What is wrong with you?! -He hears him yell as soon as he puts the phone to his ear-. Why are you doing this?, I thought you were a good friend of Luka's and that I could trust you, but you left him without saying a damn word, do you know how he feels right now?, he's trying to find a way to see you to find out what happened to you.]
“Tell him I can't talk, that he shouldn't look for me and that he should forget we were friends.” He said, though he wasn't sure of his words.
[That easy? -Andrea laughed under her breath. He felt completely stupid at that moment. Besides him, Luka didn't socialize with anyone, he was happy that he had finally found a friend. He even thought Emanuele was romantically interested in Luka, and if it had been that way, he would support him all the way. However, Emanuele turned out to be a jerk who abandoned him without the slightest explanation. Andrea snorted, angry-. Go find him, he'll be waiting for you at the same place where you met, tomorrow at eight.] He said, and hung up the call
Emanuele, who had sat up on the mattress, put the cell phone aside and closed his eyes, letting himself fall backwards. To see him, or not, the result would be the same, albeit a little more awkward and painful for him. By this point, he had convinced himself that Luka really couldn't be kind or affectionate to anyone.
"It's better this way... Yes, it's better this way." He tried to convince himself before going to sleep.
...----------------...
Luka was sitting on that old, freshly painted white bench. He watched pedestrians pass by from time to time. Some couples walked hand-in-hand, while groups of friends laughed and joked around a bit. He moved his eyes everywhere, hoping to see that messy brown hair. However, forty minutes had passed since the time they had agreed on, according to him.
He had thought that the relationship between them was good. He already considered Emanuele to be someone important and relevant in his life, he didn't understand why he had distanced himself so suddenly. However, the distance between the two made him have a strange feeling of loneliness.
Since he was young, he was used to not getting attached to anyone, because, in the end, no one stayed forever. Not even those people who claimed to love unconditionally. Therefore, clinging to a friendship or a relationship was always indifferent to him. But that was an exception with Andrea, of course. And he thought that he would be the only exception, until he met Emanuele, and everything changed.
But he hadn't heard from him in two days. He had sent countless messages and made numerous calls, but was still being ignored and, somehow, that depressed him. He didn't know what was going on with him and, if he was in trouble, he would like to help. Although he didn't tell him many things, he wanted Emanuele to talk to him about his conflicts, at least so he could advise him or listen to him. He didn't think he was the type to hide until it was all over.
He sighed and looked at his cell phone again, turned on the screen and put in the password, the message he had sent almost an hour ago was still unread. He tried to call him, but there was no answer.
"Are you okay?, I want to know if I can help you with anything. I'm still waiting for you, and I'll stay here until midnight, but… But if you don't come… I'll understand."
He sent the message and turned off his cell phone.
Just as he said, he sat there until midnight, even staying half an hour longer than he had planned, however, Emanuele never showed up.
He grabbed his cell phone and went back into the chat, but the messages had been read, but there was no reply.
“I don't know what happened, and I thought we could talk about it. Whatever was going on with you, but apparently you don't want to know about me. And, although I would have liked an explanation, I will try to understand you.”
He sent the message.
Then, letting out the air from his lungs and taking a deep breath, he recorded an audio message.
—Hey, Emanuele, if I did something wrong, I would have liked to know. If something is wrong with you, you know you can count on my help. I don't understand your distance, and I don't mean to make you feel bad, but we are friends… Or, at least I thought so. Anyway, I'm really glad to have met you and… I don't know, if anytime, when you're better, we talk, I won't hold a grudge, you can come whenever you want… And nothing, take care. I… I love you. —He whispered the last words, feeling a lump in his throat.
After that, he closed the chat, turned off his cell phone, and left.
From a distance, Emanuele, who was watching, wanted to run to him, and hug him, however, Leandro was not the type to brag and, most likely, would find out if he met with Luka.
...----------------...
In a warehouse in the United States, a meeting between high-powered men was taking place. All wearing black masks, covering their eyes and noses, or their entire faces, gathered around a rectangular table and viewing the huge screen that projected images and information about beautiful and unique men.
“Gentlemen, you know that there are only two thousand of these people in the entire world, and, the rarer and more beautiful they are, the more valuable they are. The auction of the first boy will be in Russia, please don't forget to bring your best offer.” The boy with the white mask concluded. He was the one who led these meetings with the bosses.
He looked up at the security camera and nodded. The man watching the screen intently smiled maliciously and sipped the wine in his glass. When the plan worked, his effort would be rewarded.
