Chapter 4: It doesn’t to be magic

It’s been six months since Lila visit Hector as he requested, she is still doing her

research for the magic for immortality, both party may know already that this

effort futile since that kind is do not exist in the first place, human cannot

acquired immortality that easy even they devout their entire life searching for

it.

On the same time Elysia continue learning magic thanks to Lila teaching her she

steadily improving but no matter how she practiced she still cannot reach her

goal. Though she didn’t have any hope doing all things Lila teaches her, she keeps

repeating it day by day.

Though practicing magic is not all she does all day, in the morning she cooks

breakfast for Hector and taking care of Lila, who she always found passed out in

the library underneath on the pile of books, she obediently obeys Lila’s word

without question seeking to improve and prove herself to Hector, she always does

her best.

Lila notice something while observing Elysia fire magic, as Lila requested Elysia is

performing the fire dance ritual, this ritual is casting fire magic and

wrapping your body to it while maintaining it while dancing by mastering this

ritual the caster will grant full control of the fire magic and control fire at

will, by observing Elysia for over a month Lila discovers all among the other elemental

attributes Elysia can wield, fire is her forte though Elysia hate using fire

magic for some reason and doing her best to avoid using it as much as possible

but she cannot say no to her master.

Reluctant to do the fire dance, but she doesn’t want Hector to be disappointed and waste

Lila’s time she doesn’t have any choice but to obey, in mind she rather wants to

use the wind magic of all things, since it’s the magic she has been using since she

started to learn magic.

After sometimes she finished performing the fire dance, after she cancels the cast she

instantly fall to her knee drench in sweet and heavily panting catching her

breath her sight is a bit blurry and head spinning she exhausted her mana to the

point she cannot cast a spell anymore, she tried to stand up but she no strength

to do, her whole body is shaking uncontrollably.

Elysia couldn’t take it anymore, she fell flat on the ground still panting, her sight is

slowly turning dark as she's looking at Lila who sitting on one of the rocks, she

completely knock out after that as Lila looking at the girl in the ground

drench in sweat, she slowly stands up, pat side of her skirt to remove the just

and slowly walks toward Elysia.

She picked her up and look at her sleeping face for a while, then she brought back Elysia

where Hector is sitting in the rocking chair in the porch enjoying the sunlight

when he sighted Lila carrying Elysia he got instantly worried upon realizing

she just exhausted her mana he instantly let a big sigh of relief.

After bringing Elysia to her room to let her rest, Lila join Hector in the front of

the house still sitting in the chair, both of them are just silent while

listening to the sing of the birds.

“How’s your research?”

Lila let out a sigh hearing Hector's question, she looks at him with serious expression with no hint of cheerfulness, she just looked at him dead in the eyes.

"Tell me why are you doing this?"

Hector just look straight to her eyes without a hint of emotion "Remember when i told you before that dying is part of human eventually we'll die someday"

"I remember you saying that not afraid of dying, you're putting a brave face back then?"

Hector just nod on answer and look at the sky as a pair of birds fly by, pressing his hand together it's shaking lightly Hector takes a deep breath seems he is troubled what to say Lila just looking at him waiting for his answer.

"If I say you are right, you will help me?"

"I'm already helping you?"

"That is not what I meant, I mean if I told you the real reason for me doing this, you will still help me?"

Lila looked at the old man looking at her with his all wrinkled eyes with solid determination, she could only let a big sigh no matter how ridiculous things can be, Lila cannot deny that Hector is her friend, companion and not to mention a member of the hero party who defeated the demon lord, and she owes a lot of things to Hector throughout their journey she intends to pay that owe little by little, but time flows so fast often lost track of it and now all the people she now is slowly getting old and dying.

"You say it"

Hector just smile "Then promise me no matter what happen you will protect Elysia, and make her the best mage like she always dreamed of"

"There is nothing to do with the immortality you have been requesting me to discover, I know you already know that you cannot discover magic by staying in one place, and Elysia is steadily improving, but it's still a long way to go until she hit her target"

"I see"

After Hector replied, Lila heard a loud thud beside her, when she looked to that direction she saw Hector collapse on the floor she panicked while she calls out Hector's name, she brought him to his room and sit beside him looking down and sad, Hector looks at the window now the beautiful and blue sky covered with black clouds and rain with wind so hard, he looks at Lila who didn't say a single thing for a while.

"Please don't be sad, it's been a miracle I have been able to walk in this age as I told before dying is just part of human life" Hector said with soft and weak voice.

Lila stands up, "I'm going to make a magic to make you immortal"

Before Lila can walk out of the room, Hector reach for her arm when look at him, Hector was shaking his head slowly.

Lila sit again beside Hector, they both not altering a single word just the sound of rain and wind can be heard, suddenly Hector heard a soft sobbing when he looks he saw Lila was wiping her eyes, Hector smiles and gently hold Lilla's hand.

"You are really a good person"

"Where that come from? I have never been a good person" Lila replied with shaky voice as she holds the hand of Hector tightly.

"Yes you are, remember when we too late to save a village from the demons, we all lost hope of finding a survivor, yet you never give up and continue searching until you found a little girl covered in rubles, I can still remember like yesterday the look on your face it was mix of happiness and sadness, and you never let us take care of that girl you take care of her until we find an orphanage that took her in"

"What are you talking about, I just do that because I just feel sorry for her and if we left her there eventually she will die"

"You're really a good person, Lila, I have a request for you"

In the amidst of the storm, strong wind was blowing as the leaves rustles violently Eleysia is standing in the edge of the cliff looking down seeing the river was flowing violently she takes steps back and slowly aim her staff toward and fire a flame arrow, yet before it can reach the target it disappears seeing the result Elysia become frustrated to herself gripping the staff tightly she was about to try it again, yet was startled by Lila appearing out of nowhere.

"Elysia postpone your training, Hector had collapse I need you to his side now"

Elysia pressed her lips together, "I haven't achieved my goal yet, I know this day will come that's why I study hard learning magic to become a proper mage since I promise Hector-sama that I will repay he's kindness to me by fulfilling my promise to him, yet still I cannot hit my target and Hector-sama is already in that state"

"You know promises can be fulfilled later on as long as you don't forget that promise, it maybe not now maybe someday you will come back here and fulfill that promise to Hector, and base on what you have said you didn't promise him to hit that target but to become a proper mage right?"

"But if I didn't hit that target, I don't know what to do, he saved me from my darkest day when my village was attack by the remnants by the demon army I'm the only one survive, every night I dreamt about the horror that day the screams, agony, and desperation they're still ringing to my head like it's been part of myself now, and it's driving me crazy that I almost end my life but Hector-sama save me, he's kindness saved me he teaches me how to live again, and now it's my turn to return that kindness, but I don't know anything beside magic"

Lila seeing the young girl lost in thought, she reminded that she is used to being like this, she slowly approaches Elysia now on her knees and hold her hands.

"It doesn't have to be magic, reaching your goal right now is not a way to return he's kindness he showed you throughout this year, just staying on his side on his final moments is also way repaying this kindness show him that you are grateful that he save you"

After hearing Lila's words, Elysia followed her back to the house where she enters Hector's room, still soaks wet water dripping on the edge of her coat she slowly approach Hector and sit beside her, sensing someone just sit beside him, he slowly open her eyes and see Elysia smiling to him.

In the front of Hector's room, Lila is just standing watching the two chatting happily like a grandfather and granddaughter, she left without saying a single word while her tears fell she makes her way to the kitchen staring into the dark she clutches her chest and sobs.

Several days later, Lila and Elysia are standing in front of Hector's grave, Elysia put a flower on the grave while saying thank you to him, Lila just standing looking in Hector's grave and gently rub her hands to it, and she looked at Elysia.

"Let's go"

The two walking to the road with no clear destination, and Lila remembers her promise to Hector before he pass away.

"This is my final request to you Lila, Elysia hates demon like you, she loughts them that she wishes to exterminate all of them and I know you are fully aware of the consequences being consume of that hatred I want you to train her to become a proper mage and not being consume by that hatred"

"I cannot promise you anything, but I will try my best"

Back to the present Elysia was walking bit ahead of Lila, she is looking at Elysia and ask.

"Elysia do you love magic?"

Elysia stops to her tracks and look at Lila puzzled by the sudden question they both standing in the middle of the road like a person doing a duel waiting for each other to make the first move, and after a while Elysia let out a bit creepy smile.

"I love magic, becuase with it I can defeat demons who took everything from me"

Seeing the look of Elysia and her relpy Lila just walks like she see nothing and Elysia follows after her still puzzled why Lila suddenly ask her that.
