Heartfelt Chronicles: Echoes Of Affection
"Hearts Across Eras"— 9
He was mostly fine, just feeling a throbbing pain in his head and a stiff ache in his spine. They put him in a room and laid him down, with the bed propped up a good bit so that he could try to talk. A nurse put a light up to his eyes and checked his pupillary response.
“Sir. What day of the week is it?” She asked, and Jungkook squinted his eyes, trying to focus on her voice.
Jungkook asked, and she shook her head.
“It’s actually Thursday, sir. And what’s the color of the sky?” She followed up.
“Do you know why you’re here?” She asked.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out. One more question, what’s the last thing you remember?” She asked, and Jungkook wracked his brain trying to think of his last memory.
Jungkook
I was with my hyung.
He responded, and the more he thought of it, the more the vividness of his memories slipped away, as though they were a dream that he was beginning to forget so soon after he’d had it.
Jungkook
My ears are ringing, why are they ringing?
He grumbled as he moved his head to the other side to avoid the light.
“Don’t worry about that sir, that’ll subside with time,” She assured and then turned to the doctor.
Jungkook couldn’t really make out what they were saying, but there were mentions of minor injuries, such as bruises and cuts, but also a minor concussion.
Jungkook
I don’t have a concussion, *he absentmindedly spat* I was just having coffee with my hyung after dropping my Appa at the airport.
He slurred, trying to grasp onto what reality was and wasn’t. Images of a blast and a vague memory of Jeonghan’s car came into his mind, but they disappeared before he could hold onto them, and within seconds, it was like they were never there.
His head felt heavy and light, as his brain shut down and remained alert at the same time, the day’s events shocking his senses into confusion and muddle. His emotions clawed into one another, canceling each other out, leaving him in a state of in-between, a gray area from which he couldn’t escape until far later.
The door busted open, and Hyunjin barreled in.
“Mr. Hyunjin! We have to ask you to wait outside,” The nurse said.
Hyunjin moved her aside and then came to stand next to Jungkook, his face falling into one of concern. He put a hand to Jungkook's head.
Hyunjin
Jungkook, my bunny, Talk to me, what’s wrong?! *he looked Jungkook's frame over, as his breathing picked up*
Jungkook
Hyung, what’re you doing here? I thought we were at the airport to drop Appa off and having coffee a second ago.
Jungkook explained, and the nurses and doctors in the room looked in shock at the interaction. Of course, they couldn’t have known Jungkook was Taeyong’s son. He never took his last name but changed it to something else to avoid affiliation with his mother.
Hyunjin
That was three days ago, Sweetheart, what happened today?
Hyunjin asked again, and Jungkook furrowed his brows, his eyes narrowing and his mouth falling agape as he tried to understand what was going on.
“Mr. Hyunjin, with all due respect, he has a minor concussion! He’s experiencing acute memory loss,” The nurse explained, and Jungkook swallowed hard.
Jungkook
What’s she talking about, hyung?
Jungkook whimpered as he shook his head, trying to shake the ringing noise away and deny her at the same time.
Hyunjin
Nothing, sweetpea. Just get some rest.
Hyunjin turned to Jungkook and shook his head, his demeanor changing so as not to worry Jungkook. His face was still full of concern, but not nearly as erratic as he was when he first entered the room. He moved Jungkook's hair from his face and squeezed his hand. After regaining his composure, he turned to the staff.
Hyunjin
Run every test you can think of, check every single thing that might be wrong. *Hyunjin ordered, and they all nodded* I want to know for sure that he only has a concussion, and then when you’re sure, run them all again!
The cat was officially out of the bag. Before long, the whole building would know that Jeon Taeyong’s second son was a low-level desk worker at SSKIELD that has been sitting right under their noses for three years. Hyunjin and Taeyong had spent twelve years keeping the connection between the three of them under wraps, avoiding every mention of Jungkook's name and keeping him as far from their dangerous work and lifestyle as possible, but everything came undone in a matter of minutes.
Now they would understand why supervisors were suddenly fired for talking down to Jungkook, or why agents would get transferred to different departments for hitting on him, or why he got called up to the high-level floors despite his job not providing the security clearance. 90% of the people in his department had never even met Hyunjin, and yet Jungkook went upstairs on every one of his lunch breaks.
Everything would start to click into place for all the agents and employees, and if Jungkook wasn’t in danger before, he was surely in danger now.
Hyunjin had to make sure that the team heard it from him before it floated around the building. He scoffed at himself as he entered the elevator, his hands running over his face frustratedly. So much for keeping Jungkook out of danger, he thought and squeezed his eyes shut.
He needed to know what happened; all the details of the attack were going to be given a good look by everyone on the team, and they weren’t going to leave a stone unturned until they know what the hell was going on.
Hyunjin
REBECCA, tell the team to meet in the office ASAP. It’s urgent.
