Heartfelt Chronicles: Echoes Of Affection
"Hearts Across Eras"— 3
Taehyung awoke to the distant hum of a baseball game resonating from the radio, the sound seeping into his consciousness before his eyes could flutter open. As he gradually lifted his eyelids, a deliberate slowness marked his adjustment to the ambient light. A furrow formed on his brow, signifying the initial confusion that lingered upon focusing on the familiar game playing through the radio waves. Shifting, he sat up, taking in the details of the room.
Yet, an unsettling feeling pervaded the air—a palpable sense that something was amiss. It extended beyond the radio's playing game, heightened by the cacophony of car horns from the street outside. Taehyung’s scrutiny intensified, particularly fixating on the radio. Before any action could be taken, the door creaked open, diverting his attention to the entering woman.
“Good morning,” she offered, her voice carrying a kind cadence as she closed the door behind her. Glancing at her watch, she added, “Or should I say afternoon?”
Kim Taehyung inquired, seeking clarity in the midst of the unfamiliar surroundings.
"You find yourself in a recovery room nestled in the heart of Seoul." the woman responded.
Kim Taehyung took a moment to meticulously scrutinize the room's details and the woman's presence before uttering another word. A disquieting sense of unreality hung in the air. Firstly, he should have met his demise in the crash of that plane. Secondly, the baseball game emanating from the radio seemed incongruent with his expectations.
Taehyung
Where am I truly?
Kim Taehyung directed his gaze once again toward the woman.
"I'm afraid I don't comprehend."
Taehyung
The game. It's from June 1942. I know because I was there.
The woman's eyes widened as Kim Taehyung gradually rose from the bed, positioning himself in front of the stranger.
Taehyung
Now, I'm going to ask you again. Where am I?
Abruptly, a squad of men clad in black tactical suits stormed into the room. Kim Taehyung instinctively stepped back, swiftly neutralizing the men and forcefully propelling them through the simulated wall.
“Sergeant Kim, wait!” The woman pleaded.
Deaf to her appeals, Kim Taehyung focused solely on escaping. He sprinted out of the expansive room that had served as the backdrop, ignoring the woman's warnings blaring over the intercom.
The people in the hallway swiftly joined the pursuit of Kim Taehyung. Undeterred, he forcefully cleared his path, reaching the window. Exiting, a pang of trepidation hit him as he found himself in the midst of a street that resembled Seoul but felt strangely different. Running until he slowed near what he presumed was Gyeongbokgung Palace’s entrance, his surroundings became engulfed by a fleet of black cars converging on him from all directions.
"Stand at ease, soldier," a commanding voice called out.
Kim Taehyung turned to encounter a man adorned in a light brown trench coat, emitting an unfamiliar yet dominant aura. As the man approached, a subtle scent accompanied his authoritative presence. Military personnel emerged from vehicles, orchestrating the crowd to ensure civilians kept their distance, while the trench-coated man advanced towards Kim Taehyung.
Inquisitive, Kim Taehyung asked,
Y/N
I am Colonel Y/N Y/L/N, the Commanding Officer of South Korean Forces.
Y/N
You might have known us as the Strategic Scientific Reserve for the Army.
Puzzled, Kim Taehyung questioned,
Y/N
You are currently at 161 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea—specifically, the entrance to Gyeongbokgung Palace. I apologize for the staged scenario earlier, but we were uncertain about your mental state, so we opted to reveal the truth gradually.
Taehyung
What is happening?
Y/N
You've been in a state of deep slumber, Sergeant, for nearly 83 years.
He was caught off guard, immediately overwhelmed. Eighty three years? How was that conceivable? He took some deep breaths, surveying his surroundings.
Taehyung
How am I still alive?
Y/N
Well, to be candid, the truth is elusive, *you sighed, contemplating* According to our medical experts, it was suspended animation. Perhaps your body traversed time and space, or possibly due to your body being frozen. It remains uncertain. We've encountered only one comparable case, but unfortunately, the individual did not survive.
Taehyung
What about the war? Did we emerge victorious?
Y/N
Absolutely, unconditional surrender. Dismantling the Mawang government played a pivotal role in that victory. However, the world has undergone significant changes since then. There's still a considerable amount of work ahead, the kind that only a soldier can undertake. The world could benefit from a man like you, Sergeant.
You extended your hand, and Kim Taehyung shook it firmly.
Y/N
There's a place here for you.
Kim Taehyung looked around once more, grappling with the enormity of the situation.
Y/N
Are you going to be okay?
Taehyung
Yeah. Yeah, I just…I had a date.
Y/N
I'm sorry about that. Let’s get you back to the building so that we can talk some more.
Kim Taehyung turned to you and followed as you both entered one of the many black cars that surrounded you. The journey was silent until a comment you made prompted questions from Kim Taehyung.
Taehyung
You mentioned dealing with a case similar to mine, *Kim Taehyung began* You said that even though the survival period was brief, the specifics are unknown. How long were they in the ice?
Y/N
You weren’t in the ice much longer than he was, *you answered* Only by a few years.
Y/N
I suppose this is not the most opportune time.
You looked Kim Taehyung squarely in the eyes.
Y/N
It was your fellow Sergeant, Sergeant Lee Wooyoung. Wooyoung survived too, but unfortunately, not for long.
Kim Taehyung absorbed the revelation with a mixture of disbelief and sorrow. The name, Wooyoung, echoed in his mind, unlocking memories of shared camaraderie and the unspoken bond between soldiers.
Taehyung
Sergeant Wooyoung…
He muttered, the weight of the revelation settling in his chest.
You recognizing the emotional turmoil, gave Kim Taehyung a moment before continuing,
Y/N
We did everything we could to save him, but the effects of the prolonged freezing were irreversible. His sacrifice, alongside yours, played a pivotal role in securing the victory against Mawang.
As the black car continued its journey through the unfamiliar city, Kim Taehyung stared out of the window, contemplating the complexities of time and loss. The reality of waking up in a different era, coupled with the news of Wooyoung's fate, created a tapestry of emotions that he struggled to unravel.
