Between Power and Obsession
Things have been complicated since I lost my mom. I am 21 years old, mom got sick a year ago, I had just finished secretarial school and all I wanted was to get a job and then… achieve my goals, which is to study economics and business administration and manage a large company. But things got out of hand, Mom started having dizziness and fainting spells, we went to the doctors and discovered advanced brain cancer.
We tried everything….
But in 6 months she was gone, leaving me alone in this world, all I did was withdraw and cry.
It was just the two of us for as long as I can remember. Dad was a man who came and went from our lives until one day he wasn't there anymore. I don't even remember his face and I confess that I never bothered to know anything about him, after all, he chose to leave us.
I spent almost all of our savings on Mom's treatment and another part I used to support myself during all this time that grief was knocking me down. But I couldn't wait any longer, I needed a job and no matter how devastated I was, I would pursue my dreams, which were also Mom's dreams.
"Good afternoon! My name is Pamela Romano and I'm here for an interview." - I try to sound confident.
"Hello, your documents please." - The receptionist is so elegant that I feel lost here.
I was nervous about this opportunity, I had been referred by a teacher and I never imagined that my first interview would be at Gallo Enterprises. I was sweating and I was definitely about to pass out from anxiety.
As soon as the receptionist cleared my access, I ran to the elevator and damn the door closed before I got in, I checked my watch and it was 5 minutes to go, I couldn't be late so I noticed there was a private elevator, I looked to one side and then to the other, there was no one so I got in and marked my floor.
I took the opportunity to take off my blazer, I was sweating, without realizing it I saw that the doors opened and when I went to get out I bumped into a man.
"What are you doing here?" - said the impatient man.
"Ahhhh…. I….I…." - I couldn't finish speaking, I didn't know who the man was, but he was very angry.
"Come on…. you got off on the wrong floor." - he snapped, pointing to the elevator, I didn't react, I just got in. - "You should know this is a private elevator."
The man was incredibly handsome, he was all sweaty and carrying some bags, I avoided looking at him but what little I observed was amazing, I soon thought: he must be some abused employee who has the boss's trust and is here playing me for a fool. I won't admit it.
"Look, I took the wrong elevator, okay. But you have no right to talk to me like that, who do you think you are? The boss?"- I play all my anxiety in the tone, not looking at him, just looking at my blazer again.
"Girl, you are…" - the doors opened and I noticed it was my floor. I got out and before they closed I looked at the handsome man and said:
"Have a terrible day you arrogant jerk and choke on all your pride." - he looked at me with a fury, but before he could say anything the doors closed and I was calmer, nothing like a good argument with a handsome man to make the day flow in its perfect order.
The interview was great, I answered all the questions, the salary was excellent and I would have excellent future opportunities, I got millions of tips and due to my teacher's indication the position was mine, there was no competition since the vacancy was not even announced, I felt the weight of responsibility and when I signed the contract I could see my mother's smile, if she was here she would be celebrating the first big victory I had towards our plans.
"Miss Romano, as Mr. Gallo's secretary you will have a considerable amount of uniforms, well they are not exactly uniforms, they are clothes that express the position you hold, so these are the stores that are responsible for dressing our executive secretaries, some models will be available and we hope that you are always aligned with the perspectives of your position and the company."- speaks with all the pomp and circumstance of the company.
"Of course, Mrs. Martim." - I say impressed with everything, but showing that you can trust me.
"Mr. Felipo Gallo is a very controlling man, so you will have difficulty absorbing some tasks but I guarantee you are in good hands, there is no smarter and more strategic entrepreneur than him in all of Europe. In addition, you will have the opportunity to get to know other countries besides Italy, it will be a great opportunity for you. We don't usually hire newbies, but Marcia recommended you directly to the boss so take this chance, don't waste it."- travel wow…. I've never left Italy and I was excited for it all to begin.
I left the company feeling fulfilled and with a lot of expectation, I confess that I never liked weapons and I even researched the company because I was caught off guard by the referral and only had time to put on something and run to the company. I took a train to the store indicated by Mrs. Martim, when I entered I was helpless, everything was very expensive, and I couldn't choose anything, the attendant took my measurements, and that was it, I was free to go, I just had to wait for the delivery of the supposed uniforms.
I got home and took care of eating something and going to bed, soon Monday would arrive and I have to be ready to become everything I've ever dreamed of.
"Mom, I took the first step. Soon I'll be the new CEO of a big company."
Soon I fell asleep.
