Han Shu's mother, the second wife of the Minister of War, was rumoured to be a woman of virtue from another Kingdom, probably the Shen Kingdom if to judge by biological characteristics. Her daughter inherited those characteristics, a gorgeous baby with emerald green eyes and a few blond hair was born.
From when she was little, she was tutored in the pure arts of music, dance, calligraphy, painting and embroidery by elite teachers assigned by her father. This resulted in her being well mannered and cute from a very young age, attracting those around her.
The Minister of War was quite the strict, stereotypical type that didn't want his daughter, a woman, to learn martial arts or get implicated with the powerfull cultivation world, so she never got actually trained and was still in level two of her cultivation at the age of getting married later on.
When she was less than fiveteen and haven't had her adulthood ceremony yet, the Minister of War received a lot of invitations to form family ties by marriage from men with quite a status, influence or wealth. His dear spoiled daughter rejected them all.
The fact was, not that she was picky, but she had already fell in love with the -young and handsome back then- General Lin, the man who already recently got married with a brilliant wife, the boy who picked a flower gently out of the ground and gifted it to her to consolt her when she was found by him crying on the street.
She found a chance to get close to her beloved when the wife had her first child, Lin AnXie. A girl. 'Accidentally' bumbing into each other one night, catching a deep conversation while drinking wine and the ignorant young man soon fell for her.
The General proposed and between the other betrothal gifts was her from then on spirit pet, a medium sized stone turtle.
The next month their marriage was held and the couple immediately had a baby. Another girl. But it didn't matter, because the husband had already forgotten his 'true' love for his wife and his mind had been seduced by the looks of the concubine mother and illegitimate child.
For the first few years, although she kept acting spoiled, Han Shu didn't dare disrespect my mother. She always payed courtesy when seeing her, had been acting with the required manners.
But when Lin AnXie became five years old and her spiritual energy that was supposed to appear at her birthday never appeared, a chaos spread in not only the family household but the whole city that the first legitimate child of the General was not only a female, but also useless.
A year or so went by with my mother, still in the position of the wife as she is today being forced to tolerate the harsh comments from the low concubine. Implied insults, dressed by 'kind' words.
The real bullying started when the fifth birthday of Lin ShuShu came. She had strong spiritual energy that got praised and admired by all.
My mother kept the position of the wife as it is a disgrace to take a divorce or lower her position but she handed the responsibility of taking care of the household matters to Han Shu and she went to live to a shabby yard provided with only little amount of necessities.
That is, she suffered all that because she refused my father's suggestion to abandon her loser kid and continue enjoying the pleasures that her originally high status provide.
A mother's love... is so absurd.
Then, I felt someone tapping my shoulders and I looked up, I saw my mother. The sun behind her touching with his rays her hair and eye lashes gently only made her more bright than she already was. Her smile was sweet and loving as always, while her shubby dress was sadly deforming her stunning beauty.
Why did she have to suffer such poverty?
Why do all those people have to suffer poverty every day? Living on the street and dying of hunger.
My mind flushed with memories. I could do nothing but watch as innoscent people of both gender and all age fought for their lives while I, a weapon that only ever learned was to kill, was provided with everything I could imagine without ever desiring it.
I can still remember that scene. Two kids. Fighting over a piece of bread. Then a knife was drown. Only one kid and a dead body left. A murderer younger than the age of ten. And for what? For a goddamn piece of bread.
I felt another tap, on my right shoulder this time. I realised that I have been blankly staring at my mother's face for quite a while now.
