Knight

The Bearded Tavern's ambiance is still boisterous and welcoming.

Saru and the others were in a corner, but the atmosphere there quickly became stale.

"Ride a... knight?" you ask. The elderly mercenary gaped in amazement as he turned to face Colin.

Although he was aware of Colin's complicated identity, he had no idea that he was actually a knight.

You see, there is a fundamental distinction between the warriors on the streets and the knights in our society.

As long as he can afford a few silver dollars, any well-developed civilian who can buy meat can learn how to incite battle spirit in the warrior union and become a warrior apprentice.

The Cavaliers, though, are unique.

You first need to possess a few skills, but more significantly, you need to agree to the priest of the Church of Light's invitation to be baptized.

It is quite distinct from the type of baptism practiced on earth, which is sprinkled with water and has solely symbolic significance. A sacred mark is inscribed on the baptized person during the baptism ritual in this world so that the priest of the Radiant Church can cast a spell to communicate with the Lord of Radiance.

Each priest has a cap on the number of christening services he can conduct in his lifetime because this process costs a lot of money.

As a result, such baptismal quotas are very valuable. They are basically totally controlled by the nobility, and the common people have almost no access to them.

One may imagine how few knights there are.

For instance, Baron Angelet only has three obedient knights at his disposal. The baron has only five knights in all, including himself and his son Colin.

Among them, Colin is still a knight apprentice and has not even attained the rank.

Professionals in this planet can be categorized into nine levels, with level one being the weakest and level nine being the strongest, based on their strength.

Of course, the first level has an apprentice level below it that is designed for newcomers who have not yet formally entered the level.

In reality, there isn't much of a combat power differential between knights and warriors of the same level. While knights do have an advantage over warriors in a direct fight, this advantage does not guarantee victory. After all, other elements like martial arts, willpower, equipment, and weaponry must also be taken into account.

The potential of the knightly vocation is actually what draws nobility to it.

Level six is the highest point in the warrior profession.

That's correct, whether it be humans, trolls, orcs, or elves, there has never been a seventh-level warrior across the entire continent.

His Majesty Peter Messiah, the inaugural Pope of the Glorious Church, claimed that

"Gods' gifts are necessary for mortals to enter the holy realm."

Knights of level seven are also known as paladins because level seven and higher is the holy realm.

Because of this, it follows that fighters who have not been baptized will undoubtedly be unable to receive divine gifts and advance to the seventh level.

Only five professions can now advance past the sixth level in the entire universe.

They all work in professions that believe in the same god, without exception.

The Naga royal guards follow the god of storms, the orc skull crushers serve the god of destruction, the human knights serve the Lord of Radiance, the troll warriors serve the god of war, the elf rangers serve the goddess of destiny.

Even spell casters who assert to believe only in arcane truth and do not believe in gods are unable to advance past the fifth level.

However, they have the ability to cast spells that are forbidden with power levels as high as 7.

However, casting such a banned spell comes with a price that is so horrible that it cannot be viewed as a normal form of attack.

Of course, it is by no means simple for knights to enter the sanctuary.

Any household that has a paladin as a child will experience tremendous fame.

The honour of having "Holy" before their family name will be bestowed to all families that have produced Paladins.

For instance, the Hilde family, who control the Glorious Empire's northern territories, is formally referred to as the Saint Hilde family because they are descended from the empire's original Paladins.

There have only ever been seven paladin families throughout the Glorious Empire's history.

This demonstrates how challenging it is to access the refuge.

The legendary realm is the name of the eighth level.

The first and only paladin in history to be recorded was Garna Lorenzo, the founding emperor of the Glorious Empire.

There has never been another paladin who has reached the legendary realm in the more than a thousand years that have passed since him.

not to mention level nine.

The ninth level is also referred to as the realm of demigods, because it is purportedly only accessible to the dragons that formerly ruled this world. No race since their annihilation has been able to produce a powerful demigod.

The realm of the gods is the level above the ninth level, in terms of levels.

In conclusion, knights should naturally be found in castles rather than establishments like the Bearded Tavern because they are a prestigious and uncommon occupation that could even be claimed to belong only to aristocrats.

Normally, no knight would decide to travel to another city with a band of mercenaries. They do have their own armies, servants, and retinues, after all.

Colin's appearance is peculiar because of this.

A hairy small head abruptly protruded from Colin's shirt as the mood in the corner grew more gloomy.

"Meow——" The kitten shouted at the bearded guy as if he were angry that his peaceful sleep was being disrupted.

After shoving a specific man who stood up furiously back into his clothes, Colin grinned slightly and enquired of the bearded man, "How do you know that I am a knight?"

Colin thought he was actually being careful enough.

He wore the uniforms of a guard who was "borrowed" and had a similar build to himself. He was not armored, and his sword was merely a simple one-handed blade that he handled casually.

Additionally, although warriors and knights do perform differently in battle, there shouldn't be a difference unless one of them actually takes action.

Additionally, even if there is a conflict, Colin, a knight apprentice who has not yet attained the rank, is no different from a warrior apprentice because he cannot inspire the Holy Light to aid in combat.

Is it possible to quickly discern between these two professions?

Colin thought that this might be the predecessor's knowledge blind spot.

Who knew, though? Saru said with a mischievous grin, "I guessed it."

be duped!

This bearded man appeared to be careless and trustworthy, but Colin soon realised he had been duped.

Saru ought to have merely been wary, but Colin's unintentional response caused the other person to affirm that he was a knight.

The main cause is that Saru seems too perplexing.

Colin became less alert as a result, and the other party took advantage of him by impersonating him.

Mercenary group Fire Fox.

Haha, it makes sense why it has this name.

He has the aggressive appearance of a bear yet the cunning of a fox.

"I have worked as a mercenary for more than 40 years, and I have witnessed countless individuals with these eyes. Hehe, you little one, even though you are wearing regular clothes, you don't appear to be a member of the general public. You will definitely find out the secret if you lie. Got it!"

Colin inhaled deeply and kept telling himself he had to be careful around a veteran with Saru's level of experience.

On the outside, Colin didn't seem anxious at all about having his name disclosed; he was cool and collected.

He first produced ten copper pieces in front of Saru and threw them to the veteran mercenary as a sign that he should go first.

"I admit that the little trick before was indeed inappropriate, and I apologies to you," he said as he sat down in the chair next to Saru. However, you shouldn't decline a knight's offer to accompany you, right?

Who are you? Saru hid his smile and fixed his eyes on Colin.

Karn, Karn Sudol, Colin said with the utmost sincerity as he met Saru's eyes straight.
