The Pathway Taken
Waking up that morning was a drag. I had expected my day to start off lively and full of excitement yet it was not what the world had planned for me. The whole sky was full of shadows with the promise of darkness forecast the whole evening. I only knew what would follow next. I would have to take the bus to school.
The walk to the bus stop was short due to my parents apartment being so nearby. This little convenience of mine was actually one of the good things in my life. Less of anything is always better for me. I absolutely hate too much of anything. Like a good walk is nice, yet a 3 mile hike up the hills! No… never… that stuff just is not for me.
Waiting for the bus to arrive I pulled out my phone to check if I had received any Taps on my tapchat account. But it looked like everyone also had a slow morning as well due to the low amount of taps I had. Looking up from my phone I noticed the shimmer of a golden badge on a white blouse that resembled the one I had currently placed over my heart. It was the Luxi Academy badge. My school added our logo onto the shirts only a month ago and we were required to wear them. Honestly, it felt a little weird at first like we were all factory works with labels on us but slowly it became unnoticeable once all the kids on campus had it embroidered on their shirt.
The girl in front of me with the white blouse pushed past me to jump on the newly arrived bus before I could get the chance to notice its arrival. Quickly following her, I headed to an open seat. Unfortunately she had taken the last spot on the bus that was a single seat so I had to sit on the public couples bench. Heading to the back where they kept the couples benches. I saw with total surprise that they too were filled up. All but one seat remained and that one was next to him, Xander Ramerez.
Let me catch you up in a few things… this guy! Xander Ramerez, he is the most obnoxious, annoying, and irritating people known to probably all of mankind! His attitude if fully stretched out would probably be as tall as the Eiffel Tower! He was the worst of the worst on the bully factor and he had it out for me. Why?! Because I was what he liked to call… “His Girl”. This is the part where I’m rolling my eyes. He said all of these little things that drove me crazy! We were only in eighth grade at that time and I had not seen him in years but I could recognize that jacket anywhere… but seriously! This dude needs to get a grip and realize that I do not like him. I never will and I…
That’s when I saw him. Truly saw him. He had changed. Definitely changed. No greasy hair, no huge blocky glasses, No unibrow. Slowly headed to the back to that seat. I got a full glimpse of him. His eyes had still not yet looked up at mine but I could feel his attention. He watched me without staring as I took the seat next to him. His dark black hair now properly styles flowed to delicately in front of his face as he slouched over on his knees staring at his phone. His eyes… had they always been that bright of a blue?
Looking away, I caught myself. What was I thinking!!! This is Xander! The dangerously obvious guy who was head over heals in love with me three years ago and yet he had changed. For the better? I say yes. Fighting the urge to take another look at him. I began to pretend to search for something in my bag. That’s when I realized I had forgotten my phone charger and that it was at ten percent! Panicked I knew I needed to get it charged before art class when I would need it for reference photos. That’s when I felt the slightest touch on my arm it was a hand taping me every so lightly.
“Hey, you lose something?” A low voice grumbled next to me. I let out a little gasp in hearing his voice for the first time in forever. I turned to him. Xander locked eyes with me for a second before looking away to dig out a charger from his bag.
“I brought an extra one if you are needing to charge yours.”
Still unmoved lips frozen with a hit of panic in my eyes I nodded, took the charger he handed to me, and placed it into the bus port to charge my phone. The first bit of awkward silence between us after that interaction was covered up by the volume of the radio playing over the speakers and the quiet hum of voices chatting as we approached the school.
When we reached the Campus, Xander hurried on out of the bus with all the other students before I could even get the change to return his charger. I let out a loud irritated sigh as I realized what that meant. I would have to see him again in order to return the charger.
Hopping of the bus, I hurried onto my first class. Towards the west wing of the campus. My backpack was light on my shoulders due to the low level amount of my classes that actually required any physical paper work and more technology based reading and typing. All that was in my bad was a small laptop, sketch pad, a few water color paints, some new art brushes for class, two hair ties, and what I had not notice earlier. A small piece of peppermint candy the size of my thumb. How that piece of candy got their was a mystery to me but I had a guess on who it could be…
