Episode 9

Amara Follen

After two more days in the hospital, it's the first time I've felt happy to return to the castle.

The boredom of being locked in my room all day was killing me. The moon was high in the sky when I decided to go for a walk around the castle. The sound of water flowing in the huge fountain gave me a much-needed peace, my mind started to slow down on the recent events and how vulnerable I was feeling. I began to wonder if it was still possible for me to have my wolf soul, or if I had already become human.

"You seem to have found your favorite spot in the castle."

"Alpha Brandon? What are you doing here?"

"I believe I came to do the same as you."

"How are you feeling? I thought you'd be in bed at this time."

"I was feeling bored in my room, and I spent the day there."

"I understand."

It's such a strange feeling I always have when Alpha Brandon approaches. I have to control myself to not show how nervous I am when I'm by his side. We stayed silent for a while, admiring the moon, neither of us willing to break the silence that surrounded us. As my mind wandered through my numerous thoughts, I felt when Brandon placed his coat over my shoulders.

"The night is cold, and you're only wearing a thin nightgown. You must take care not to catch a cold; your health is still fragile."

"Thank you!"

"Have you always lived in the castle?"

"No, my father and I came to live here after my mother died in battle. Since he spent most of the time away, he feared for my safety, until one day Alpha James invited us to live in the castle, along with other high-ranking members. My father did not hesitate to accept; he was certain that here I would be safe."

"But you don't seem happy here."

"Eh, you've discovered me."

I felt happier living in my old house; there I didn't have to deal with the arrogance of wolves who think that having a high rank makes them better than the rest of the pack.

Only after speaking, did I notice Alpha's narrowed eyes and furrowed brows as he examined me. I felt my cheeks redden. His gaze was so intense and deep it could make anyone get lost in them.

"I'm sorry if my words offended you in any way."

"Don't worry, I appreciate your honesty. Would you lead me around the castle grounds? A walk is always good."

"Me?"

"Yes, you seem to know the place well."

"Oh yes, I know it. If we follow this path, we will come to a vast field full of dandelions. The wind always tends to carry them away; it's incredible."

"Now I'm curious, you lead the way!"

As Amara led the way, Brandon watched her walk. His nervousness didn't go unnoticed; he admired her beauty in silence, and inhaled her addictive scent secretly. Once they reached the vast field, a gust of wind blew the dandelions away. Brandon watched from afar the majestic scene before him—dandelions surrounding Amara, who had entered the field and twirled happily, making her hair dance around her torso, her arms outstretched beside her body propelling her spin. Brandon felt strange, yet immensely happy. He didn't even notice the slight smile that formed on his lips.

...The Royal Academy...

"Amara, you're finally back. Mia and I were so worried about you. Are you feeling better? What happened that day?"

"Take it easy, girls. I'll explain to you."

As Amara unveiled the details of the recent events, Mia and Kyra listened with extreme curiosity and concern. She felt happy to know there were still people who cared about her besides her father.

"So, you don't remember anything?"

"Nothing, I can't remember anything."

"Kyra, can't you help her remember with your magic?"

"It doesn't work like that, Mia. Dealing with someone's mind is very delicate and dangerous, especially when we don't know why the memory is missing, whether it's caused by trauma or if it's a defense mechanism the person developed."

"Don't worry about this, girls. I'm fine this way. The lack of this memory doesn't make me feel bad, really, I'm fine."

"If you say so."

"Amara, I took the liberty of preparing this mix of herbs for you. They will restore your life force. A pinch in water should be enough. Remember to take it every night."

"And me? Don't I get anything?"

"No," Kyra answered mockingly.

"Evil witch." (Laughter)

"I'm going to get my books from the locker; meet you in the room."

"Okay."

"Amara? Would you like to know what's wrong with your wolf?"

"Of course, it's what I wish the most."

"Good, meet me after class at this address. I will help you find out what's wrong with your wolf, but you must keep it a secret, agreed?"

"Agreed!"

"Now let's go; Mia is waiting for us."

"..."

I was so anxious to find out what was happening with my wolf that I paid no attention in class. When the class-ending bell rang, I took a taxi straight to the address Kyra had given me. When the driver stopped the car by the side of the road near a forest, I checked the GPS on my cell phone to confirm the address. He informed me that I would have to continue on foot as the path was difficult to access. After walking for some time, I saw an old cabin on top of a hill, indicating that was my destination. As soon as I knocked on the door, Kyra answered with a wide smile. As I entered, I was impressed with the interior of the cabin—it was luxurious, tasteful, and seemed much larger than it appeared from the outside. This was certainly magic.

"Impressive, isn't it?"

"Yes, it looks nothing like the outside."

"Yeah, my grandmother did a great job."

"Kyra, who's the girl?"

asked the woman who appeared to be just over forty years old.

"Mother, this is Amara, the girl I told you about."

"So, you're the girl without a wolf? Interesting."

"Yes."

"Kyra, prepare everything. Let's begin."
