The supreme alpha Matt Demon was startled to see his mate on the ground and felt concerned because he did not intend to frighten her or cause her harm through his actions.
"I'm sorry, my Monica, it wasn't my intention to scare you."
Matt was about to address Monica as his mate as he had always waited for her, but then he remembered that she despised him, and therefore he simply called her by her name to avoid another rejection that would cause much pain not only to him but also to his wolf Adir.
Matt extended his hand to Monica and was surprised when she took it without hesitation, and her cheeks turned red, expecting that she would refuse his help as since they met she had made it clear that she didn't care about them being fated partners and her presence in the royal pack was only to prove that her love for Richard was stronger than a bond imposed by the gods.
"Tha... thank you, alpha."
"Oh, what a fool I am, now I find myself stuttering in front of my destined partner, but who in their right mind wouldn't falter in speech upon beholding such a paragon of a man before them, and this is when I feel like punishing myself for being so blind and senseless for not seeing the hunk that I was given as a fated partner; though that nameless one is charming, he doesn't come close to my mate who is mine because that's what the gods have decided. In this second chance at life, I intend to make the most of this feast, and it will be exclusively mine. As beautiful as he is, with the position he holds, there must be many flies hovering around, but as I said before, the supreme alpha is mine, and if I must use insecticide on the flies, I'll do so without any guilt."
Matt still doesn't understand the woman in front of him, even though he knows by scent and appearance that she's his mate, her behavior is entirely different since she's now being nice, which seems very odd to him.
"Why are you being so kind?"
Driven by curiosity and unease, Matt decided to ask Monica about her sudden change of manner, even though he was almost certain that it would only provoke insults and get him thrown out of the room that had been assigned to him upon arriving at the royal pack.
"Blast it, I knew when my destined partner noticed my change, he'd become suspicious, but I must keep calm and be clever to come out of this awkward situation unscathed. My hormones, the bond, and having such a handsome and delectable man before me are not helping my brain to think straight."
"I guess my hormone flux is because in this life, I'm not denying the bond, and that I am finally appreciating my destined partner. But I must act soon lest my mate thinks I'm bipolar due to my shifts in attitude and expressions."
"I regret having been so rude since we met, alpha, and my attitude changed because I have thought things over and want to maintain peace with you. If I refuse the opportunity to know you and reject you every time I see you, then I'll never understand why the gods chose us as destined partners. In the future, I don't want to regret not giving myself the chance to really get to know you and to find out if I could feel more for you than just the partnership bond."
"Oops, that's the best explanation I can offer, so I hope you believe it. Otherwise, I'm doomed and will have to find another way to get closer to him, although thinking about it, sacrificing my body to strengthen our bond wouldn't be a hardship at all. If Matt was surprised by Monica's change before, he's even more stunned now by her kindness and willingness to get to know each other and see if something more could emerge from the gods-given bond. But he's also not naive; he senses there's something hidden behind his mate's change of heart, and he won't rest until he uncovers it.
"I accept your apologies, Monica, but now I need to know what boundaries I have with you. Up to now, you've only allowed me to call you by your name and not my mate as I would like. The few times I tried to converse with you, I was rejected, and I don't want you to think I'm saying this to make you feel bad or to hold it against you. It's actually because I need to understand where I stand and what I can expect from you from now on."
Monica felt her heart ache more with Matt's words because he has every right to distrust her—although they haven't known each other for long, all she did was treat him poorly from the moment they first spoke. Henceforth, she would make it her responsibility to erase every trace of pain she had caused in the heart of her mate.
"I perfectly understand your concern, alpha, as my behavior since we met has been far from pleasant. On the other hand, you have always been a gentleman towards me, so I apologize once again. Also, I propose we start anew. You can call me whatever you prefer, as I will not mind, and I hope we can spend more time together to discover if there's a future for us."
